What do you think the most important factors in determining the NBA regular season MVP should be?

Dominance over the competition.

Whoever happens to be the most valuable single season tradeable asset. ie best overall player. This can't be hard for a panel of people to decide.

The 2 MVP awards exclude the most Important part of the season during April and May....The system is Broken...

2007 League MVP: Dirk
2007 Finals MVP: Parker

Neither one of those guys was the best player in 2007 because the awards do not reflect the most crucial part of the season. In a perfect world there

I think the best overall player and in cases where it's close you then should look at the fine details like who's team can't live without them and so forth.

The person you take out resulting in the most relative losses. I.e.: Curry.

Assume GSW is at full strength; take out Curry, they still win a boatload of games.

Take out Giannis and the Bucks are mostly useless.

Therein lies the problem. This is why the award has always been and will always be dog shit. Without a clearly defined criteria set forth by the league, people will just pick whatever they want from season to season, moment to moment.

The term “valuable” is quite ambiguous to your average person who is in the double digit IQ range if not barely three digits.

It’s pretty clear to non retards that it was just arbitrary language and a fancy way of saying “best” but because most people are retards... here we are.

Best player on the best team usually works.

Most valuable to his team's success, whatever that success may be.

Under this definition, Blake Griffin could well have won regular season MVP this year. No player was more valuable than he was to his team's .500, 8th seed "sucess." Without Blake, the team would have struggled to win 25 games. To say he carried the Pistons doesn't do it justice.

* There should absolutely be a playoff mvp award, separate from the fmvp award.

but I think the spirit of the award is who is the most valuable player to have on your team. Not who is most valuable to his team. Certain teams have their entire offense built around one guy and it's often not because he deserves it but because the team has no better options.

best player of best record, and helped his team to succeed(.)

Jordan was robbed at least 1-2 MVP rewards.

I like this comment! It made me think of an old book "Basketball Abstract" by Dave Heeren. His "Tendex" system was ( trying to simplify) Points + Rebounds +Assists+Steals+Blocked shots-Turnovers-Missed field goal attempts - Missed FT attempts +Minutes played+Game Pace ( his formula)=Tendex. His "numerical system" he claimed was not swayed by political favorites. Here was his regular season MVP by year for the decade of the 80's. 1980- KAJ, 1981-KAJ, 1982-Moses Malone, 1983- Bird, 1984- Bird, 1985- Bird, 1986-Bird, 1987-Jordan, 1988-Jordan, 1989-Jordan. The only way to minimize the controversy would be to adopt some kind of numerical measuring system, that everyone would accept, and let the computer do the analysis. And good luck finding agreement on the measuring system. I thought I'd share his results - not too far off from what was actually chosen.
