View Full Version : Anyone else ever consider that even the poorest of us live better than kings used to?

Think about it... if you have just air conditioning alone, you automatically have lived a more comfortable life than some of the most powerful people in the history of the world and probably >99% of people who have ever lived.
You have electricity. Running water. Toilets that take your waste away.
Refrigerators. Cell phones. Internet. Movies.
Beds... clothing that fits far better and is more climate appropriate.
TENNIS SHOES!!! SOCKS!!!!
CARS!! PLANES!!!
And the list goes on and on...
But it’s funny how much people base their happiness level on comparing themselves to the people around them in the time in which they live. When in reality, even if you’re dirt poor and reading this, you’re literally living better than actual kings used to.
Take a moment and look around. Life goes fast... you might just miss it.

You would literally get use to the heat and not notice it in less than 1 month with no fans/ac
You have electricity. I'd get more sleep without it
Running water.I get more exercise without it.Having to go collect water
Toilets that take your waste away. Ok...this is good
Refrigerators. It keeps food fresh for what an extra 2 or 3 days if even that?Id eat less without it
Cell phones. Internet. Movies.....Books can easily replace
Beds... clothing that fits far better and is more climate appropriate.Beds been around for much longer than everything else on this list combined.I would have to go back to the stone age to not have a bed
TENNIS SHOES!!! SOCKS!!!! We'd get use to walking around without shoes
CARS!! PLANES!!! Ships Horses...We'd get use to travling slower

Kings had servants and slaves to already do all the convenience stuff for them...
Plus they had unlimited p**** and power while most of us slave away in cubicles with no autonomy.
You really have your shit mixed up...

Nah chief. You can keep your power and influence.
I'll keep my air conditioning and automobiles.
I would rather have air conditioning than unlimited *****. I'm sorry, it's true. I've lived in Florida my whole life. I once slept in a non air conditioned room for almost a year and a half back when I still lived with my mom in my early 20s... in Florida. No thanks. **** that.

I had a fan running on me 24/7 when I was in that room... and it was still miserable.
You can't hide from no a/c anywhere in Florida. It's miserable everywhere, including the beach which is about as windy as you can get.
A/C is a big ****ing deal, and I never ever take it for granted. I love that shit so much.

A fan blowing warm air in a tiny room isn't optimal at all. You're can't compare it to a Palace back then which would be built with no AC in mind.

I will say that in today's society, and if you are financially capable or well-off, having a maid or a butler is essential.
i wonder if some ancient kings are bored out of their minds when they have complete power to anything they want without trying.
it might be like playing a video game with a god mode cheat code. you just walk through all the stages and any enemy that touches you just dies. you win all the time without even doing anything.
there's no challenge at all. no complexity. no sense of any kind of fulfillment. i don't know. that usually gets boring pretty fast.
i think most people who have experienced the hard life don't care and would trade for it in an instant. but if that simple life was all that was known to them since birth, i wonder if they're bored a.f. with all those god mode privileges.

No. They build empires.
No. They build empires.
the ones building the empire should feel accomplished. they had to go to wars and conquer for all that power.
but their offsprings who simply inherited all the easy life without doing anymore? i'm not so sure if they feel that.
that's why i said some kings, but not all kings.

listen, even if a place with good year round weather, you'd still be lacking modern plumbing. no matter how many servants, they won't replicate the pressure of modern shower heads with running water...not too mention the temperature control of the water. i would rather shower myself than have women slaves doing it for me.
then we have the issue of no electricity. candles over led lightbulbs? lmao. you want to smell ash and smoke every day vs no odor heat?
food...another big one...self explanatory.
the women that would be smashing you wouldn't do so bc they love you. sex like that sucks. not to mention poor hygiene. pvssy must stink

dude if anything the food back then was better for a king... were loaded with all types of junk nowadays, they had the freshest most natural shit possible.
Do you know the types of feasts these guys had?
:biggums:
There were quite a few euro kings who died of diabetes lmao they were fat as ****.
The hygiene stuff, they still had access to perfumes and all types of scents and products... this isnt caveman stuff. Its like game of thrones or something.
They had lavish castles and an unbelievable amount of amenities and luxuries.
The women they got were no doubt bathed and cleaned to the max, were not talking dirty peasants here.
:coleman:
after reading the original post again, i don't think the topic of kings was meant to be the primary topic.
i think what shogon really wanted to express was that all our lives today are rich with many luxuries and wonderful goodies that didn't even exist for very well off people in the past.
but let's just leave out kings altogether because they're an ultra rare group and there are obviously some extraordinary advantages to that life that tilt the comparisons. remove supreme powers or unlimited sex of kingship, etc. those benefits are just way too extreme to reject.
but going back to his original post, he thinks it’s funny how much people base their happiness level on comparing themselves to the people around them in the time in which they live.
but if they compare their lives to, say, a very successful owner of a cotton gin manufacturing business in the 19th century instead, those feelings of inferior lifestyles probably don't exist. that rich dude had it all back in his day but he still had to suffer every summer without A.C. and he lived in smelly mansion that had no plumbing. and if he wanted to travel across the country, he had to ride for months inside a horse carriage. and if he got sick, he probably died the very next week.
i think what he was really trying to say was: be thankful for what you have instead of what you don't have. and don't compare so much because you actually have a lot more than what you think you have.
was this your intended message, shogon?

it was luxuries like air conditioning that brought down the roman empire. with ac, their windows were shut - they couldn't hear the barbarians coming.

Kings probably got laid a lot more.
Think about what happened though if you had the following happen to you - these are unrelated to bad diet.
-stuffed up ear wax in your ear. Good luck getting any of that shit out.
-Any type of **** or rectal issues
-Diarrhea
-polio
-broken leg or arm

True in some aspects, yeah we got to be grateful.
Especially for clothing, plumbing, readily available water, vehicles.
Not living better than kings though, no.
But as others said there's pros to primitive living as well.
Anyone who has gone camping or lived in a village knows the feeling of peace and serenity and alertness and spirituality when away from the city. Wow, the stars and the moonlight. The roaring oceans. It's something else!

But it’s funny how much people base their happiness level on comparing themselves to the people around them in the time in which they live. When in reality, even if you’re dirt poor and reading this, you’re literally living better than actual kings used to.
The key to happiness is to be grateful. Be grateful for all that you have and all the opportunities available to you.
If you are grateful of your opportunities, then you'll be more likely to take advantage of them and become a successful person.
but should we automatically assume all rulers were all happy just because they had everything? or did they really have everything?? if they were all that happy, why did so many have to murder off their brothers, sisters, and relatives? some of them lived with fear constantly and probably had more nightmares than the average peasant. how happy can you be if you have to go to sleep every night wondering if someone was going to stab you to death in your bed?
kim jong un is probably as close to a modern day emperor as anybody, and despite having more materialistic possessions than anybody else in his country, i think he's probably the most miserable and paranoid fvck case in that country too.
happiness comes from so many factors and it's so different for everybody. perhaps a simple guy who has very little in material is a lot happier than most kings or rulers. maybe he has found the greatest loving wife and has the most perfect relationships and friendships with everybody around him. all that superficial stuff don't mean shit to him and he is happy with what he has because he has inner harmony and substance. a king who is not well-loved probably envies that aspect and maybe he is actually more depressed than all the people that he ruled.

I have thought about this OP. Not necessarily about kings though. But think about it... People want the latest smartphones. Even 20 years ago, you couldn't have a smartphone even if you were a multi millionaire. Imagine having all the money in the world and only being able to own a flip phone.
So it's funny if you think about it. Let's say you own an iPhone X. 3 years ago, the richest people could only own an iPhone 6. You essentially have a better phone than the richest people had even last year!
Talk about ancient kings. They don't have Facebook or the internet. They can't watch the NBA. Traveling was really hard. You couldn't really go on vacations or anything like that. No emails.
You could more on your phone than the richest people could do years ago.
You only need money to live and fulfill what it is you want to do in life. But money itself doesn't really do anything, it's just an insurance. You can't do anything with money unless you spend the money. Let's say you have 8 million in the bank and you die. Well, that's 8 million that you never got to spend.
Oh and let's say you own a PS4. The richest people in the world could only own a PS3 10 years ago. In 2 years kids are going to own PS5s and wonder how we were ever happy just having PS4s.
You know what Cheryl Crow said in ''Soak Up The Sun?'' It's not having what you want, it's wanting what you've got.
