Two questions on what was one of my favourite teams of all time.
1. How good were they defensively on an all-time scale? Perhaps just for their peak season when they went on the massive run.
2. How would they fair today? Today's game is about defending the 3 so Detroit's defense would be extremely out of place if you ask me.

I think they went 5 consecutive games holding teams under 70 points. It was insane. Teams would have 45-55 points by the start of the 4th quarter against them.
They held the Lakers to their lowest point total in finals history and then did it again in the 2nd game running if I'm not mistaken. They held a lakers team that had Shaq, Kobe, Fox, Malone, Payton, Fisher, and Walton to 68 points.
That defense was incredible.

They played straight man. They just did it better than anyone else. They'd be fine today.

I remember people saying that the Cavs beating them in 2007 was crazy, while indeed it was coming back down 0-2, people forget that was well past the 2004 Pistons. Ben Wallace wasn't there anymore. Wasn't the same defensive team.

Kobe's selfish play had a lot to do with that

Reminds me of 2016, people forget that it wasn’t the same team as the 73 win Warriors. Andrew Bogut, Draymond Green, and Andre iguodala were not there anymore. Wasn’t the same defensive team.
Except they were there. Green played 6 out of 7 games, Bogut played 5 out of 7 games, Iggy played all 7 games.
Three years later and you're still whining.

On an all time scale, they're slightly below Duncan/Robinson Spurs imo.

Wallace is the most underrated player ever and proof of that is that he wasn't a 1st ballot HOF.

Wallace was strong. He played against taller centers and even bigger centers.
But his strength was impressive. Tayshaun Prince was long and quick.
He could guard multiple positions.

Man that early 2000s era was absolutely brutal defensively
Ben Wallace was actually my 2nd favorite player in the league around that time, after T-Mac

As for how good they were on an all-time scale, their defense was 2nd only to the Spurs that year (The Spurs that year had an ATG defense with a -8.8 rDRTG, any defense that passes the -8.0 threshold is ATG/GOAT tier)
Detroit's rDRTG was -7.5. So basically right on the cusp
