In this era of the 3 ball, Kawhi is proving the importance of the mid-range game. The 3 is too hit or miss and guys can get cold for long stretches and it's almost impossible to get to the rack in the playoffs. So what does an offensive player really have left? The mid-range game. Mastering this aspect means you have a super high pct shot to rely on at almost any possession.

This is what separate Kawhi from flawed players like Giannis and Curry. Let me explain with Curry. Almost all of Curry's game is within the flow. He's hit or miss when it comes to creating his own shot in half-court sets. This is where Kawhi shines. He can just hold that ball, dribble down the clock and pull up.

This is why you can't listen to guys who never played the game and rely only on stats. Guys like Morey will tell you that the worst shot in bball is the mid-range game. But if you play the game, you realize the importance of this shot for the reasons I mentioned in the OP. They think the game is played on a stat sheet. They'll never get it.

Like Jalen said the other day regarding analytics, it's a lot harder to defend a team that can make a shot from anywhere on the court vs. defending a team that only goes for 3s and layups because of said analytics..

Now, almost half of Kawhi's made FGs were 3s (5 out of 11), but what makes him unguardable is the fact that he won't hesitate to fake you out and shoot a wide open mid-range jumper - he's automatic from anywhere on the court.

That's what teams like the Rockets and Bucks are missing - the mid-range shot.

Uhh Leonard is shooting like 39% on 2.4 makes a game in the playoffs. He's made 12 3's in 4 games and is shooting 40% in the finals. Part of the reason why his midrange game is so deadly is because defense's have to run him off the 3 point line and are worried about that shot. Add in all the spacing when he's on the floor with other 3 point shooters and it gives him more room to work in the midrange.

His two most popular shots this playoffs are within 0-3 feet, and the 3 pointer.

Raptors are 51-141 from 3 on 36%. GS is 45-128 on 35%. Leonard is tied for the 3rd most 3's in the finals, and is only 3 away from the leader Curry who's shoot almost 5% worse from deep.

If your midrange game is as elite as Leonard, or someone like Durant, it's deadly for sure. 3 point shooting absolutely matters tho, and plays a big role in the midrange game nowadays.
