View Full Version : All-Time NBA 10-Man Lineup Fantasy Draft
Hakeem Olajuwon
06-25-2019, 05:35 AM
If you were going to build a 10-man lineup out of all the NBA players to have ever played, who would you choose?
To answer that question we will set up a fantasy draft, snake style (whoever picks last in the first round, picks first in the second round).
Who wants to play?

No online simulators, just pure hypothetical debate and eye-test.

It's the best lineup right? Not best roster for a long term dynasty.
So I'm thinking peak... who at their best is most likely to help my team win.
To me picking Wade over Kobe for example wouldn't be crazy, even though I'd probably have Kobe at least 10 spots higher on an all time list.
Gotterdammerung

I will stick with best year or peak of the player in question, so there won't be any waffling or inconsistency in head to head matchup. If someone picks Shaquille O'Neal, they shouldn't be able to switch from young athletic Orlando Magic Shaq to dominant but heavy Lakers Shaq to old savvy Miami Heat Shaq at anytime or between matchups.

Yeah, these time wasters are fakkin annoying. I once drafted with a player who was back to back. Time limit was 4 hours. Literally waited 4 hours to make his pick and 4 hours after to make his second in the back to back. Lol. People can be suck douchebags

If I were you I'd go with the 1976-77 version of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. This year may not be recalled as fondly because he didn't win a championship, but it was his best year: third in scoring, second in rebounding, first in FG%. He stepped it up in the playoffs with 34.6 ppg, 17.7 rpg, 4.1 apg, 3.5 bpg, 60.7 FG% at 42.5 minutes per game.

Not sure, maybe create threads with polls matchup by matchup. Or the participants themselves can judge each matchup? Or the participants can rank each team, excluding their own, the team ranked highest wins.
Just throwing ideas.

We can go with the old format we used in the past for these all-time draft tourneys:
1. Each member explains why he would beat the other team in a 10 team playoff tournament. The rest of us vote on the winner.
2. If there's a tie, we use the whatif sports simulation for best out of 7 matches.
Problems: Not sure about how to seed the 10 spots and how to advance if there's odd number of winners in the second round.

Was seriously considering Walton with my last pick. Good pick.
Bill Walton is the best center to add to a loaded team cuz he can play any style and doesn't need to dominate the ball like many other centers.
If you have a center like Hakeem you must build around him in order to contend effectively - so you'll be forced to draft more shooters than usual.

First pick, I’m gonna give Magic a perfect P&R dunk/layup partner, the Mailman. Karl Malone was deadly in the low post, on the fast break and possesses a solid mid-range jumper, a prolific and durable scorer. Adding more defense, athleticism and strength in my front court, dominating defensive rebounds alongside Bill Russell.
Second pick, I need my shooter. One of the greatest clutch shooters we’ve ever seen: Ray Allen. I needed a shooting guard who won’t dominate the ball, but not just an elite shooter, possessing an impressive all-round game. Jesus Shuttlesworth will create for me exceptional floor spacing on offense, opening up lanes for Magic and Karl Malone.

My idea was having two divisions of 5 teams (everyone ranks the teams 1st to 5th for each division (excluding your own team))
Only Top 4 progress to playoffs.
We then progress to the First Round.
E.g
Division A #1 vs Division B#4
Division A #3 vs Division B#2
And so on...

With Chamberlain, Bryant and Robertson, I have powerful inside scoring, rebounding, and excellent halfcourt offense, as well as isolation scoring. But that doesn't account for perimeter shooting, fastbreak offense and athleticism.
With the 36th pick I select Bob McAdoo who should provide outside shooting and fastbreak scoring, as well as athleticism. I can go small with McAdoo at center, provided that I field enough shooters on the floor.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with McAdoo, at least the Buffalo Braves version who won league MVP, not only was he a great shooter like Dirk Nowitzki with excellent range, he was a superior post player whose athleticism allowed him to penetrate from the top of the key. He was also quick enough to block 3 shots, collect 15 rebounds, and score 30 plus per game as the primary offensive option.

that's a great one, spacing is a rare commodity among the all time great which is why guys like klay, allen, and miller are going earlier than where they rank. You have a lot of scorers on your team, oscar will really have to fully show off his point general skills.

Correct, but Robertson had a type A personality, a domineering one that would hold the other guys accountable, and consistently run the offense. He would make sure Chamberlain and Bryant got their shots, and if they were properly defended, then he would overpower his defender with powerful moves to the basket.
And you're right - the modern game has shifted heavily in favor of shooters whose range stretched the floor, forcing defenses to switch in order to prevent open shots off set picks. :hammerhead:

This is easy. Ill go with '90 Patrick Ewing. Averaged 28/11 55fg% on 4 blks, made All-NBA First team over Hakeem and D-Rob. Defeated Bird-McHale-Parish in the playoffs.

06-28-2019, 08:44 PM
The fit v talent issue comes up for me here.
I have interior presence wirh Kareem and Chuck. I have the ultimate point man in CP3. Ideally I now need a great scoring wing with range, who can play D.
But, I'll find him later.
There is one guy left in the draft that I can't pass up on. He is a 3x MVP who in his peak was unanimously considered the best player in the league. Here is a list of his achievements in the 1983 season alone.
- 1st team All NBA
- 1st team All Defense
- Regular season MVP (with a 96% award share!)
- NBA championship, sweeping the Kareem, Magic, Wilkes Lakers in the Finals
- Finals MVP
When you're at the 39th pick in the draft, screw fit. You don't pass on this player.
Of course I speak of Moses Malone.
He can rotate with Kareem at 5, Barkley at 4, or even play alongside both and push Barkley to 3. Barkley's best seasons (90 and 91) were primarily played at SF, particularly on defense. That lineup would absolutely dominate the boards but would need shooting in the back court to stretch the floor.
So for now I'll go with
C- 77 Kareem
PF- 83 Moses
SF- 91 Barkley
PG- 08 CP3
But Chuck / Moses might move to the 2nd unit, depending on who comes later.

Most intriguing thing about this draft so far? None of the last three MVPs have been selected.
James Harden, Russell Westbrook and Giannis Antetokoumpo are all still on the board!
Come on man, don't give these guys ideas. :oldlol:
But yea, there are also a bunch of great 70's players who are also available.

Now I feel even dumber. Giannis defense is great and interior presence with shaq is comical. Shooting be damned

James Harden.
Like him or hate him, he can hit the 3 and space the floor, he can get inside and draw fouls and he can run the point with the second unit, while CP3 takes a breather.
Slight concerns about his willingness to play off-ball and effort on D, but as with my pick of Moses, when you have an MVP calibre player available, you take him. Harden's efforts on D have improved, and with a reduced offensive load he should be ok. Also, I have three All D players in the lineup already so we should be fine.
C- 77 Kareem
PF- 83 Moses
SF- 91 Barkley
SG- 18 Harden
PG- 08 CP3
Any of Moses, Chuck or Harden could find themselves in the 2nd unit, depending on who comes later

I’m picking best player available with 18 Giannis. Likely the centerpiece of my 2nd unit and a defensive anchor too. Can play vs taller pfs instead of draymond or even with dray the minutes I sit shaq. Will find a sf later.
00 shaq
18 Giannis
16 green
West(will pick later)
09 wade
You probably mean 19 Giannis.
Good pick. When superstars are available at this point, you take them. The difference between the 5th and 7th-8th best SF all time is no where near as big as the gap between Giannis and the next best available PF or C.

Okay, since my team now has all the firepower possible and some good defense I'll go with '08 Manu Ginobili. Gives me another shooter with crazy versatility, he can handle and pass the rock, drive and finish inside, & hit the 3. Also possesses leadership and intangibles you can't teach. I will have Manu come off the bench, a role he mastered with the Spurs.
C - '90 Ewing
F - '04 Garnett
F - '13 LeBron
G - '03 McGrady | '08 Ginobili

i was thinking either of those guys instead of giannis but one problem is their spacing doesnt expand to 3 most likely. I think west can however and dray at least in 16 is quite good. Good thing is sf is a great shooting position among modern guys.

Was thinking of taking a PG this round, but the best PGs available didn't provide the 3 point shooting I was looking for. LeBron loves his 3 point shooters. Also love Manu, he's not the best player available, but I knew there was a chance he would be gone by the time I made my pick in the 6th round.

You have Ewing, Garnett, LeBron, McGrady so far. Worry about your own spacing.
CP3 can hit the 3. As can Harden. You have to guard both closely out to the three point line. Both obviously can also blow past defenders who come up to them and don't need much space to make plays for others.
91 was also Barkley's jump shooting year as a 76er. He generally made mid range to long 2's if left open.

I also believe PGs are somewhat overrated in these all-time drafts. A point guard's job is to get teammates easy buckets, but everyone here has a starting five that can pretty much create their own shot at an elite level. Having a great defensive PG is a luxury, but I always value frontcourt defense and rim-protection more because you can always provide help if your PG is beaten off the dribble.

lol, McGrady shot 39% from 3 in '03. LeBron shot 41% from 3 in 2013 and by that time improved his jumper tremendously. And we all know Garnett is money from mid-range, hitting 43% from 16-23 feet in 2004. You also forgot Manu who shot 40% from 3 in 2008. My spacing is fine.
Barkley is a prototype PF, and M. Malone is a true center. It's weird seeing them all out of position. Seeing Barkley defend on the perimeter will be comedy.

Whitsitt asked Portland’s team physician, Dr. Robert Cook, to take a look at Sabonis’ X-rays before he arrived. Cook asked Whitsitt if he was sure his new player could play. “He said that Arvydas could qualify for a handicapped parking spot based on the X-ray alone,” Whitsitt said. ven before he came over to the NBA, Sabonis was slowed down by two ruptured Achilles and an assortment of foot, ankle, and knee injuries. The first occurred at the age of 22, in 1986, the same year Portland drafted Sabonis 24th overall.

Yeah, you definitely have to have a right balance of picking the most talented players and drafting lesser players that fill your team needs like shooting, defense etc.
The early 4th round is when you saw people drafting shooters like crazy, wasn't expecting that.

there's another strategy which you as coach could just ask your stars to scale back their shot attempts. At least for my team i dont think i'm terrible personality wise(dray and shaq are both lazy for the unimportant games so wont call each other out lol). West will likely have to be a heavy spot up shooter. Hopefully his pnr with green can have some resemblance to curry/green even though west isnt a pnr guy.

It's all good.
I have 5 MVP level players now. All I need to do is fill out the roster with the parts I need.
I could have Kareem & CP3 starting and Moses & Harden rotating in off the bench. They don't need to play out of position. Then at all times I have top 25 ATGs at the 1 and 5.
As for Barkley playing at SF. He did it for three seasons at Philly with Rick Mahorn / Armen Gilliam starting at PF. In 1990 he was MVP playing at SF.

My next two picks are two of my all-time favourites. Both tenacious, vital cogs to two of the best teams we’ve ever witnessed:
My first pick is a dynamic swingman who could do it all. One of the best all-round players of all time, John Havlicek. Hondo gives me gritty defense, athleticism and incredible versatility.
Nicknamed the ‘Celtic Man in Motion’, on the court he’ll be constantly running, cutting and attacking the basket: a relentless force able to dominate both ends of the floor. His constant hustle, selfless drive and movement without the ball will be key.
Hondo will be a devastating fastbreak finisher with Magic and Malone, while offering yet more clutch shooting, rebounds and steals.

Walt "Clyde" Frazier.
I need a bulldog on defense in the backcourt, and a savvy vet to keep the offense running when Robertson sits. A championship caliber player, Frazier is perfectly suited for this team of alpha types and egomaniacs.

Mark Price.
One of the first great three point shooters, arguably the greatest free throw shooter ever and a four time all NBA point guard who, at his peak, was selected over John Stockton to the All-NBA first team.
As a dual 3 point contest champ and career 40+% 3pt shooter, Price will be a GOAT tier spot up shooter, as well as an awesome back up PG for CP3.

With my next pick I choose Michael Cooper the 8x All-D and 5x champion Lakers SG
Specifically I'm picking 1987 Michael Copper who was DPOY and one of the best perimeter defenders of all time.
He was also an elite 3 point shooter. PO & RS combined, he hit the most threes of anyone in the league in 1987, at a rate of 41%.
My back court is now complete. CP3, Harden, Price, Cooper.

I already have strong point guard play with Robertson and Frazier, as well as an isolation scorer in Bryant, but I don't quite have enough athleticism.
That's why I'm picking David Thompson who, in 1977, scored 27 points per game on .521 FG% from the floor. He could score from anywhere, including the post and had a beautiful but quite deadly jumpshot due to that ultraquick first step. But his strength was high-flying dunks in the Doctor J class, unusually explosive type of athlete who pulled off standing dunks easily like a 7 foot center - finished easily with acrobatic and powerful dunks.
C - '67 Chamberlain
F - '75 McAdoo
F - '06 Bryant
G - '77 Thompson/ '94 Petrovic
G - '64 Robertson/ '70 Frazier
I will focus on shooting and size in the final rounds.

Early prognosis:
DaHeezy has a donut - strong on the perimeter, but squishy on the inside. Webber and Muotumbo aren't reliable offensive scorers - Webb likes elbow jumpers and Mutombo only does putbacks.
AussieSteve has a balanced team with KAJ, Barkley and Moses up front, plus Paul and Harden in the backcourt, but they're all ball dominant guys.
NBAGOAT has a ferocious duo in prime Shaq and Wade, but insufficient shooting with Green and Antetokounmpo up front, clogging the paint. Shooters in Lillard and West and Stojakovic will have to play heavy minutes, but that compromises the team defense.
1987 Lakers has a solid roster, as long Kidd and Ginobili start over ballhogs in McGrady and Irving, in order to free up room for LBJ so he can also hit Garnett and Ewing for 15 foot jumpers.
Manny 98 has an underrated roster with the Admiral and KD up front, and Nash and Moncrief in the backcourt. But in this tournament, Korver and Howard are strictly bench guys.
:biggums:
SouBeachTalents has a terrific frontcourt with Olajuwon and Nowitzki, plus a deadly combo with Thomas and Miller in the backcourt. Artest is a better fit with the starting lineup, so Billups and George can play together.
Iamgine is sneaky-good with McHale and Payton backing up Walton, Leonard, Curry and Davis, but he needs more wing players.
Achilleas should dominate with high IQ players in Duncan and Bird and Thompson, and versatile with Erving and Areneas, but needs more power and rebounding to fight the real monsters elsewhere.
Olajuwon has the best roster overall, with champions like Russell, Johnson and Havlicek, as well as reliable halfcourt options in Malone and Allen.

I agree with got's criticisms of my team but i'm banking on specific years helping me out here. 00 shaq by all accounts is an all nba rim protector, 16 draymond shot 39% from 3 in 16. I'm going try to fill out my bench with some defense however. Dont play on ever playing shaq, giannis, dray together unless another team goes with 3 bigs lineups(giannis dray will be my small ball duo for now).

.
I'm actually seriously considering starting Kidd over Irving. No way I'm benching T-Mac though. I wouldn't consider T-Mac a ball hog, he was basically Orlando's only scoring option when he was there, he had to take over games with his scoring. T-Mac's passing ability was the most underrated part of his game.

Yes but LBJ and McGrady are duplicate players with a ball dominant game. Neither were particularly good at playing off the ball.
GINOBILI! was a much better teammate and was more likely to keep the ball moving to the open man.

AussieSteve has a balanced team with KAJ, Barkley and Moses up front, plus Paul and Harden in the backcourt, but they're all ball dominant guy.
I feel that I have the best back court of any team.
Defensively I have one of the greatest defensive PGs ever and one of the greatest defensive SGs ever who, between the two of them, have won a DPOY and been selected to 17 All-D teams.
For spacing I have a GOAT-tier 3pt shooter in Price. And Cooper is the ultimate 3 and D player. In 1987 he was DPOY and shot 41% from 3 (RS and PO combined) while making more 3 pointers than Larry Bird did in any season of his career.
Harden is obviously an ATG scorer and CP3 and Price are elite ball handlers. Scoring, shooting, spacing, defense, ball handling, facilitating... All A+.
I'm not concerned about having too many ball dominant guys. We've seen Harden and CP play beside each other successfully and Price can play as an off ball spot up shooter or secondary ball handler... as a 2x 3pt contest winner and 4x All-NBA PG, he'll be elite in either role.
My front court needs a couple of pieces, but offensively I feel it's the best of the lot so far. Peak KAJ is imo the best combination of scoring, facilitating and defense ever at the C. Moses and Chuck are two of the best offensive rebounders of all time, and peak Barkley was the next best thing to Shaq in terms of offensive dominance inside.
In terms of interior defense, KAJ and Moses were both All-D 1st team in their peak seasons. While their not a DRob / TD tier defensive pairing, the team will have elite rim protectiom and defensive rebounding, no matter who is on the floor.

Two gifted clutch wings...
Clyde "The Glide" Drexler
An exceptional finisher: acrobatic dunker/athletic slasher/midrange shooter, solid playmaker, rebounder and defender.
- Drexler leads all guards with his career average of offensive rebounds with 2.4 per game.
- averaged more rebounds, assists, steals and blocks than Kobe Bryant, (and higher shooting % from the floor)
- record for most steals in a half (both regular season and playoffs history)

A bit busy right now but I'll go with Nate Thurmond as a backup for Chamberlain, or a big lineup to battle potential Twin Towers.

Pierce or Iggy were my next targets, but since they are gone I'll go with '05 Bruce Bowen. Elite 3 and D guy.

ok i can make the pick I accidentally made like 5 picks ago. Hello 04 andrei kirlenko. One of the most versatile defenders of all time and better man defender arguably than draymond. Should help make up for my kind of weak perimeter defense so far
G- West, Lillard
G- Wade
F- Peja, Kirilenko

A.I. and Wilkins were on the board for so long for a reason. They are great scorers, but don't provide much defense, shooting, & passing. They are one-dimensional. You have a very talented team, but other than Stockton and Rice, you don't have 3 point shooting.

1977 Bobby Jones: 15|8|3|2|2 on 57 fg% | All-NBA Defensive First Team
One of the most overlooked players in history, actually just got into the basketball HOF. One of the all-time great defenders in history, made the All-Defensive First Team 10 times, 8 in the NBA, 2 in the ABA. One of the few players to average 2 steals and 2 blocks in a season. His 6'9" size, hustle, and underrated athletic ability allowed him to guard multiple positions on the floor... forwards, guards, and even some centers.

C - '90 Ewing
F - '04 Garnett | '77 B. Jones
F - '13 LeBron | '05 Bowen
G - '03 McGrady | '08 Ginobili
G - '03 Kidd | '17 Irving
Decided to start Kidd since I need more scorers like Kyrie to come off the bench. I'm loving my defensive versatility, Garnett-LeBron-Jones-Bowen-Kidd can all guard multiple positions on the floor at a high level and I have Ewing as a rim protector. Also like the spacing and shooting I have with Irving, McGrady, Ginobili, & Bowen, I can go small ball with them with LeBron at the 4 and Ewing or Garnett at the 5.
