The NBA is considering using their 75th anniversary season in 21-22 as an opportunity to test of their bolder initiatives such as a mid-season cup and postseason play-in tournament while also reducing the 82-game regular season.

During a conference call on June 17th, a committee comprised of a dozen top team executives from both basketball and business operations discussed alternatives to the traditional schedule with the league office. The call was described as an exploratory brainstorming session.

The NBA would have the chance to observe the trial run and evaluate the long-term viability of such a schedule design.

There is a belief that a mid-season cup and play-in tournament could recoup the loss of revenue from shortening the season.

The number of games discussed was from 58 to a more marginal reduction. Sources say there was limited appetite among team officials for a major reduction in games.

I think the 58 game change would be...amazing.

Less traveling. Less injuries and more competitive play.

How would a "cup" work though? Is there a "mid-season cup" in other sports? Like...soccer?

58 is ridiculously low.

I'm a basketball fan, I need more, not less.

Anything less than 72 games is pathetic.

Mid-season cup sounds like a terrible idea. I can already see Pop sending out his second unit and some D-Leaguers.

i like 58. Only problem is a lot of historic comparisons go out the window. How impressive is scoring 35 compared to others who did when you're playing 58 games. Volume career records are unbreakable essentially.

What are you talking about. I know so many nikkas that devour pick-up game videos, high school etc... anything they can get their hands on because there's no NBA. There are basketball JUNKIES out there. I'm dying over here and the season just ended two weeks ago.

Ever heard of baseball? You philistine, 182 game SEASON.

Any reduction to the regular season and first round of the playoffs would be great.

Not sure about the mid season tournament...I'd rather see a play-in tournament for the playoffs.

Radical, but I'd also like to see them widen the court a foot or two on each side and move the 3 point line back about a foot.

But stats:oldlol:

Honestly 82 games is way too many, especially to put out your best product and still be ready for a long playoff run, but this would lose so much money. Which is all the nba cares about. It's a business.

The mid season cup is the worst idea ever. Maybe move the all star game to the half way mark like it used to be to give everyone a week off.

66 would be perfect to me personally. Would be about a 20% reduction in regular season games. But the con of this all the regular season stat totals would be unbreakable. LeBron is probably going to finsih Top 3 in scoring, maybe second or first. That'll never be broken if they reduce the games by 15-20 per season.

A "Cup" won't work in the NBA, as it won't have any value attached to it. It'll probably be equivalent to being the 8th seed in the playoffs. Unless the NBA adds a second, and eventually, third tier, slowly working in Pro/Rel. OR the Cup would also include GLG, and other pro sides, like the US Open Cup does.

Shortening to 58 would work, in theory, but the NBA would, and should, then scrap conferences. No point of having them if you play everyone 2x.

If it helps keep players healthy and leads to a more competitive product, I’m all for it

Stats and such I don’t really care about. We’ve already had plenty of changes to the game that would make comparisons unfair or give an edge to (or hurt) certain players based on when they played. This will just be more of the same

Ultimately I just care about the entertainment value and it’s definitely going to go up with a shortened season if it truly leads to less injury

Considering you're not American...shut the **** up lol.

NHL has 82 game regular season, MLB has 162 game regular season.

82 is what it has always been for NBA and what it should stay. If you change it, forever the "career records" will never be broken. No one will eclipse KAJ 38k points, Hakeem's blocks, Stockton's assists/steals, etc.

Plus, this would cause reduction in the amount of money teams make from games (less home games = less tickets sold), which also effects local broadcasting deals. This is a bad idea, no need for this. No one complains about 82 games considering it's over with in 6 months.

If it ain't broke don't fix it, considering the NBA has NEVER been more popular....leave it the **** alone. Stop trying to enhance what is already great.

Just wanted to add:

I mention teams making less money with shorter regular season because of this:

There are elite teams which will ALWAYS make money, even when losing. Example: Knicks, Lakers, Celtics, etc.

Other teams...like Atlanta, Minnesota, etc. would struggle with lesser regular season, therefore more likely not go into luxury tax/over the cap and having a less talented roster than other teams. Especially when you count in losing money from local broadcasting. It would make the league even less diverse...just don't change it. Leave it the **** alone.

If ANYTHING, ADD the "play in tourny" for like the last 2 spots in the playoffs for each conference. Instead of seeds 7&8 being determined by record, let the 7-12 seed teams play a tourny to determine the last 2 spots. That would be dope and would add to revenue while giving the top 6 teams in each conference added rest which they deserve...based on their work done in the regular season, it would make regular season games more important to lock in a top 6 finish.

7th seed bye
10th seed vs 11th seed, 7th seed plays winner

8th seed bye
9th seed vs 12th seed, 8th seed plays winner

The winners advance to the playoffs. Is it unneeded? Yes. Does the NBA want to make changes? Yes. Are they unnecessary changes? Yes. Do we want to shorten the season? No. Would I rather add this play in tourny than lose regular season games and add a meaningless cup to an already anti-climatic ASW? Yeeeeesssss.
