It's funny because in the 80's, nearly all teams made the playoffs (16 of 22 teams)

So when MJ was hurt in 86', the team only won 30 games and had no business in the playoffs - but since nearly every team made it, the bulls were forced to face the goat Celtics as the 8 seed (even though the bulls were more like a 12 seed)

And yet the 23-year old MJ led his quasi-12 seed to a closer series vs the goat Celtics than Lebron's 2 seeds played the Spurs and Warriors
