He knows they would fit well and that they/he would get the most rings playing with him, but playing with a better player than you means being in the shadow of him / called a sidekick... hence also means no FMVP for you or a shot at MVP...

It's no so much that he didn't want to play with him. It's that he really couldn't of unless he was willing to be labeled a bitch by the media and fans. He just finished rebuilding his image from the whole leaving the spurs thing. It would of been stupid to go to the Lakers and face all the criticism that would of gone along with that. Plus kawhi is a competitor he wants to beat the best and we all know who the best is.
