Eventually the world will see soccer like the US does. Great as a children's sport, but with maturity it just isn't intense or challenging enough for adults. I know the world has not embraced football because of economical reasons(football is expensive to play), poor diets not capable of producing physical specimens able to withstand the rigors of football(your average soccer player could literally be killed on a pro football field), and just pure stubbornness for tradition( and the USA is unpopular at the moment).
I am convinced that the world will show more interest in football as economies grow, people start eating better diets, and the USA comes back to earth and stops alienating the rest of the world.
And there is also this. I have noticed that in southern California there are lots of high schools who have a population of 75% or more immigrants or children of immigrants in them from Central America where soccer is king. You would think that the soccer games would have higher attendance than football games because soccer is popular there but football is nonexistent. However that is not the case go to the soccer matches at these schools and then go to the varsity football games. The football games have twice as many people as the soccer games(the fan ratio is at least 10:1 in a normal high school)even though a huge percentage of these people never knew a thing about football before coming to America. That right there proves to me that football will eventually be king.

No doubt basketball will be more popular than soccer. But my guess is 20-30 years. Basketball is full of excitement and last minute heroics. And you will never see a basketball game where they just decide that neither team is capable of producing an advantage over one another and just give up and start having a freethrow contest or a game of H-O-R-S-E.
Basketball or football will take over eventually. It just a matter of evolvement. 40 years ago look how many nations had a space program, now look how many have evolved.

Eventually the world will see soccer like the US does.
There's a much better chance of the U.S. finally seeing soccer the way the world does.
with maturity it just isn't intense or challenging enough for adults.
You obviously have never been in the 90th minute up by a goal but playing a man down and the other team has earned a corner. Either that or you're still a kid.
I know the world has not embraced football because of economical reasons(football is expensive to play), poor diets not capable of producing physical specimens able to withstand the rigors of football
Maybe the world has not embraced it because they find it stupid. And as far as your "poor diets not capable of producing physical specimens able to withstand the rigors of football" argument, I have one word for you: RUGBY. You know, that game that is enormously popular in Europe and Australia that has all the dangers of American football without all the expensive protective gear?
your average soccer player could literally be killed on a pro football field
Um, have you ever seen a professional soccer player in person? There are of course exceptions, as in all sports, but most of them are quite capable of holding their own against other athletes, and some of them are huge (6'6" is not terribly uncommon for a pro soccer player). And all of them are in better shape than any American football player, I can guarantee that. Their job is to run for 95 straight minutes.
and just pure stubbornness for tradition
Did it ever occur to you that they might find something pure in a game that all you need in order to play is a ball? Or something beautiful in the things that these athletes are able to do without ever using their hands?
I am convinced that the world will show more interest in football as economies grow, people start eating better diets, and the USA comes back to earth and stops alienating the rest of the world.
Do you have a plan to get any of that to happen? And as far as your "eating better diets" argument is concerned, the last time I checked, the American diet was pretty deplorable. Go read Fast Food Nation or watch Supersize Me.
However that is not the case go to the soccer matches at these schools and then go to the varsity football games. The football games have twice as many people as the soccer games(the fan ratio is at least 10:1 in a normal high school)
And that has nothing to do with the fact that the average public high school in this country pours much more money into their football programs than their soccer programs, right? And I bet it also has nothing to do with the fact that there are far more players on a football team than a soccer team, so there are likely more friends/parents/relatives going to watch football.
That right there proves to me that football will eventually be king.
If the fact that American football is more popular with American high school students is enough to prove to you that the rest of the world will eventually like football more than soccer, than you are easily persuaded, my friend. I hope for your sake that there are no door-to-door salesmen in your neighborhood.
Billions of people worldwide watch the World Cup everytime it is played. Remember that the next time you watch the "Super" bowl.

Personally, I can't stand watching soccer. I always rip on one of my friends because he was real close to playing summer soccer with a bunch of locals instead of playing on a real high level basketball team - Summer All-Star team, if you will.
Anyway, the point I'm trying to make is I know why people hate soccer. But at the same time you have to realise that the passion you have for one sport, in most of our cases basketball, sometimes puts a smoke screen up and anything that threatens your sport, you put down. Well, there are a gazillion across the world that have that same passion for soccer.
Putting down a sport just because you don't like it is a real lame reason. If we're over in France & talk bad about soccer you won't make many friends. If you come over from France to the USA & talk ball, play it..whatever, you'll fit in.
Different cultures is what it comes down to. At the end of the day, though, you have to respect each sport. & if you don't like it, just think how many people use that sport to "get away from things." Some people use drugs to get away from things, some people use sports as a way to get away. Sports keep people out of trouble, and for that reason alone I won't disrespect peope who like soccer, whatever floats your boat ya know?
Just sayin'

There was a time in our history where our football players used little to no protective gear as well. But that was before they developed into the monstrosities that they are today. Football players are faster, stronger, leaner and meaner than Rugby players. You have 250-300 pound men with almost no body fat and who can bench press your average european car, barreling down the field at speeds that would put a lot of 150 lb soccer players to shame. Compare the average Rugby player to your average football player and you will see why the need for added equipment.
Like I said we have football and we have soccer. We choose football. Most people from other countries don't care for football because they don't have that option. Soccer is a great sport.....for children. They love it, but by the time they grow up and are exposed to football in high school, soccer just seems drab by comparison. Soccer is much cheaper and less violent than football so you would think that schools would push for it, but you can't deny the people what they want. They want entertainment, and soccer just does not cut it.
I bet there was a time that people thought those Americans with their silly NBA basketball was stupid too. Now it's pretty much every young basketball player's dream throughout the world.

I understand how americans don't like soccer , since most of their players are terrible.
Also you need to go out and see the world , the US isn't the country with bigger/stronger people in average, and about the economic factor , baseball is also a game that requires expensive equipment and is the most popular in many third world countries in the caribean.

I was going to say something a billion people watching the World Cup and comparisons to the Super Bowl, but CakeorDeath beat me to the punch.
Anyways, you're comparing high schools to a world sport man. HIGH SCHOOLS??? So you're saying that just because football is more popular than soccer in high school, in the future football will be more popular??? HIGH SCHOOL??? Are you kidding me??? If you're doing that, then your argument is pretty weak.
Have you ever watched a Spanish Liga, English Premier League, or a Serie A game??? Look up in the stands and tell me you've ever seen crazier fans like that in your life. In American football games, you can't light those fire crackers or whatever they light up in those soccer games.
Soccer is more fun. It's non-stop action for ninety minutes. There are no commercial breaks or timeouts. Just non-stop fun.
Is there a World Cup for American Football every four years that lasts a month??? No, you know why??? Because when you said that the rest of the world can't afford to play American Football because of the equipment, the National Football League can't afford to have an event like the World Cup for the National Football League. Why??? Because it won't gain international attention. Nobody really cares for the National Football League than they do with soccer, why??? Because they grew up around soccer, they talk about it, breathe it, everything. Also, it'll be too costly and it won't make sense, therefore they can't afford to play. Furthermore, it'll mess up the team's offseason planning.
Next time you're trying to berate the World Cup or soccer, please don't mention high schools, you'll get laughed at.

Gay? How is it gay? Please elaborate. Sorry if American football players don't hit the deck as if they have been shot by a sniper with a high powered rifle anytime someone get near them. That is a little gay, no?
I love soccer. The World Cup is especially fun.
However, there really is no need to put down American football. It is a great game and truly believe that the rest of the world is missing out on it. Maybe it is the fact that we call it "football" that turns people off. I'm not really sure.
The truth is, though, that America's best athletes play American football and basketball. Even if you don't like football, I can't imagine ANYONE not being impressed by the likes of Julius Peppers, Michael Vick, Champ Bailey, Ray Lewis, etc. Those guys are just awsome athletes... and there is absolutely nothing "gay" about them.
As far as the person who railed away for someone talking about High School football, it is a huge deal in the USA. In my home state of Ohio, championship games can get upwards of 60,000 people. I live in a town of 17,000 people. Our average crowd at a high school game is 10,000. Our field seats 12,000, we have field turf, a scoreboard with instant replay... we are not talking about amateurs here. On an average night watching Ohio high school football, you can see future Ohio State stars and future NFL players all over the field.
The great high school teams feed the great colleges. The great colleges feed the NFL. That is just how it works here. The minor leagues for football is high school and college.
Also, the world would be waisting their time in a World Cup style tournament for American football. Guys can actually get hurt in real football. You throw some guys on the field that don't know how to properly tackle when a guy is steaming toward them, they can be seriously injured.
Our soccer players might be "suspect" compared to some others around the world, but it wouldn't even be CLOSE to the gap you would see if there was an American football world tournament. Combine Brazil, France, Germany, Italy, Argentina, England, Spain, and Portugal, and you might have close to the advantage in soccer that America would have in football.
I do think there will come a day when the rest of the world may see how great American football is. Nothing will probably ever compare to the popularity of soccer, but American football is a great sport.

and what is your explanation for soccer being the national sport in ALL western European countries [Luxemburg and Norway icluded which are the two 'richest countries per capita']? In japan, soccer became one of the most popular sports. And so on... Your economical 'reasons' only explain the popularity of soccer to a certain extent, and just shows your ignorance, when you believe that the USA is the only country where people are rich enough to play American football.
I live in Germany, if I wanted I had no problem to either play or watch American footbal; but I don't do it, because imo it's verrrrry boring., on the other hand I looooove soccer. And it's very doubtful that basketball ever becomes as popular as soccer worldwide. You shouldn't forget that the popularity of soccer still grows. What it comes down to in America/American sports is very simple. You are a melting pot without a national identity, a country of individuals. America is considered the most patriotic country in the world, but is there an event, where you really get together as a nation to stand behind your team or for that matter do the players care about TEAM USA. Every time you hear we have the best players (Ryder Cup, Dream TEAM, Baseball), but they never work as a team. Every time you hear people complain Argentinians play basketball with more pride and as a team, or how Sergio Garcia thrives in the Ryder Cup, while Americans win every single Golf Masters for ten years, but don

American football has no luck to ever catch up with soccer worldwide. Close to zero marketing and exposure to most major international markets. Soccer is the traditional sport in too many countries to ever be ignored. And you gave a reason by yourself: Soccer is very cheap and very easy to play. For this exact reason, it will likely never lose its appeal in most countries.
That's coming from somebody who can't stand soccer at all (and, to be fair, can't stand American football, either).
BTW, soccer is the real "football". Players use their feet way more than in your football, and that's why the overwhelmong majority of the world uses the term "football" for soccer and "American football" for football.

This guy is a HUGE jokeshow. Let me go off on some major points on why football is better than american football.
You use the "soccer is only good for children and then afterwards they play football" argument.
Ya, you're right. The children that stop playing soccer are the ones that SUCK and cant go onto the next level. So what do they play? A much easier, less skillfull sport called football.
Also, Americans care too much about money than doing things the right and more logical way.
For example, pro football and basketball teams dont do youth teams like soccer teams do. Even MLS soccer teams are beginning to do that. You can keep college but the more elite players can sign with Denver Broncos youth team or Dallas Mavericks youth team and play against each other in that. Then once they are ready can join the pro team.
Now doesnt that make much more sense then people going through college? Yes it does but that wont happen because it wont make as much revenue because people dont want to see "youth teams play each other" even though the teams are better than college. Also, the draft makes a lot of revenue as well.
Soccer already makes enough money from the professional level. They make numerous club tournaments as well as the World cup.
United States are just dumb and if they assimilate to this i think it could do much much better for the NFL and NBA.
Also its great being a fan of US soccer because you know when the day comes that USA beats ITaly or germany in soccer you will be bragging your ass off until the end of time. This time is very exciting for a USA soccer fan because USA is starting to get much much better while MLB and NBA USA teams suck hardcore and cant even win in a sport they invented.
Sad really.
Soccer is a sport of intelligence. You have to know a lot about soccer to be good and be successful. IT is much harder to become professional in soccer because there are less players.
I'll give some more facts on why soccer is better later but I have to go later.

Honestly, put some pads on some of the soccer players and i bet they would be able to play out there. There arent that many that are 150 pounds, actually i doubt there are any.
Plus, they could stay in the whole entire 4 downs and not have to take a rest after a 5-yard run and the the back-up RB go.

baseball is boring, NASCAR is even worse, but soccer has to be one of the most painfully boring things to watch ever. i have tried to watch soccer and i just cant do it. its like listening to justin timberlake just to see what all the hype is about and you sit there until you cant take it any longer and have to turn the **** off. i just cant watch it and i can even watch stuff like ping pong or swimming. didnt they have a championship game recently where the two teams weren't good enough to score so they had to have a kicking contest to determine the winner? :oldlol: if you like soccer thats cool dont let me stop you from liking it but i think if people were more exposed to superior sports like basketball and football, that they wouldn't find soccer as entertaining.
LOL SUPERIOR SPORTS. You're a joke. What are you watching? If it is MLS then you dont have an opinion cus MLS sucks.
And it wasnt a kicking contest you dumbass. They are PKs.
Soccer is a game of intelligence. Sorry but football just isnt.
There is a reason why soccer is so popular around the world.

LOL SUPERIOR SPORTS.
if you like soccer and dont like football then its cool. im just the opposite of you. i just think its boring to watch. i mean in football you have to be big, strong, fast and tough. in basketball you have to be tall, athletic with good hand eye coordination, and even in baseball you have to at least have good hand eye coordination. in soccer you have to have what? good stamina so you can run back and forth up the field trying to score but almost never do? no offense but i could probably go to the park and see the same thing by watching a dog chase its tail around and around but accomplish nothing.
And it wasnt a kicking contest you dumbass. They are PKs.
in other words a kicking contest
There is a reason why soccer is so popular around the world.
rice is popular around the world too, but I can think of a bunch of stuff i'd rather eat.

In soccer you have to be strong, fast and tough. In soccer you have to be athletic with good feet-eye coordination which is harder than hand-eye. Being strong and tall is just an advantage but being short doesnt usually get you in the league either.
You have no point. It's hard to last for 90 minutes non-stop. YOU DONT GET REST. You cant stop and get a water break every 10 seconds.
Ok? And Field Goals dont suck? Punts? There isnt a lot of punting is there?
Goals arent the only thing thats entertaining about a game. You can have actual fights in soccer. In football you can barely touch a guy because the pads and helmet limit you.
In american football do you not run up and down the field trying to score? Same thing. People say nothing happens in the middle of the field but nothing happens in the middle of the field in football. But people say, "the quarterbacks make great passes and the RBs make good runs," ok? Midfielders make great through-the-defenders passes to the forwards and dribble 3-4 times around players.
Same deal.
Once again you have no point. Every game is about running around a ball and crap.
in other words a kicking contest
Now you're just being a dumbass.

There're a few wrong things dictated by ignorance that you said:
Poor diet. Please, of all the things US citizens could teach to the rest of the world, diet really isn't one of them. Your population is endangered by the lack of health of diet, you have on of the highest rates of obesity and cardiocirculatory diseases.. just avoid talking of how well you eat with anybody, please :)
Moreover, I guess that when someone like Jona Lomu (All Blacks wing) comes at his highest speed after a 30 metres dash, there's not plenty of american football player who would be ready to tackle him. Try and watch some rugby games, before saying something like that :)
Soccer is boring: That could be a great truth.. the problem is that I've seen many a mootball games boring as much as a soccer game. For example, I find really boring the fact that during 2 hours of a game half the time the players are chatting and listening to the coaches at the side of the field. Football is great, in those resumes where they cut the dead times. And what about matinees and middle-season games in the NBA? Sports can be boring anyhow.
And then, your greatest mistake is to think that there's only 2,3 sports.
Do you think that in Northern Europe they'll give a damn about a cultural fight between soccer and football? They have alpine skiing, hockey, cross-country and biathlon.. any of which is on the average far more intense than soccer and football.
It's a cultural thing. American Football is one of the few sports all over the world that are played ONLY in one country.. there's got to be a reason, neh?
I think that the "most popular sport" contest will eventually be won by basketball.. but right now soccer leadership is undisputable, for the love it attracts in big poor areas of the world like Africa, South America.. even China..
Ah, last thing about AF to be expensive to play: rugby is played by maori children in Oceania.. on islands so small that hardly have a name. I don't think they have much money for equipment, yet they play rugby anywhere..

basketball is my favorite sport although i'm european, i consider it much more interesting to watch, but chances that it'll ever catch up with football popularity are VERY slim to none.
and basketball is already no 2. sport after football in most countries in the world. then what chance does american football have?
plenty of reasons for that IMO, you can play football anywhere, which is especially important in context of children growing to play it and like it. it just comes more naturally to small children to kick ball around than to throw it into a basket. for that reason it's also much cheaper - especially for third world countries, who regularly produce world class football players and much rarer any great basketball players. it's older than basketball and has greater tradition. for many people it's not really about the game, but also various "side-activities". in europe you've got armies of hooligans who don't really care about game itself, they just enjoy getting drunk, causing trouble and picking huge fights with other teams fans.
and so on

You just don't know the game.
Its not about run & shoot, you need to have very high technical skills in order to control the ball.
I'm not surprised a lot of people who try to watch soccer find the game boring. When I try to watch us football, I find it boring. Because I don't know any player, I can't tell which is better, I can't tell if this skill is hard to "masterize". But you won't see me saying that football suck ect.. I can't judge something I barely understand. Off course I know the rules & some other stuff but its not enough to have an acceptable opinion on this sport.

Basketball is the only current sport that I can see which has the potential to overtake soccer globally.
All you need is a round ball and something to shoot it through. Bam, you're a basketball player.
There's way too much $ that goes into picking up hockey, football, baseball, etc...
