View Full Version : Rich Paul pulls Ben Simmons out of Wold Cup to work on shooting

Last month Simmons committed to the Australian national team for the FIBA World Cup. Rich Paul has now seemingly vetod this so Ben can spend the summer working on his jumpshot.
Interesting decision. Not really sure how playing in the Worlds would stop him from working on his shot, but if he comes out next season with an at least average jumpshot that is all that really matters.
In the 76ers' press conference on Friday, Tobias Harris told an interesting story in which he revealed he has been recently working out in LA with Ben and during a one on one game he dared Ben to shoot a three. Simmons then proceeded to bury two straight.

There are videos of him making like 6 straight threes. Ive seen Ben Wallace do that too....but point is....he can shoot.....he just doesnt shoot. I guess they have to work on the confidence to do it in games. Im sure its partly mental at this point.

I agree with this.
He's definitely already put in the work in practice.
You can't hit 5+ straight threes going around the world in practice if you haven't put the time in.
He has absolutely zero confidence. He needs to start shooting in the game and saying damn the results until he gets over it and or go to a psychologist.

I find it hard to believe I need to point out to Kblaze that shooting in game and shooting in practice are completely different.

Oh he knows that but opponents regularly give him 10+ feet of space which isn't different except from a mental standpoint.
Hence the confidence comment.
Im so nba'd out

Wouldnt be shocked if Ben Simmons told Rich "i need to find a way out of playing for the national team.I want to enjoy my summer resting."
Rich probably told him dont worry i'll take the blame.
Hope i'm wrong, but i truly think this low of Ben Simmons.I dont put it past him.
Hope im wrong but i've never disliked a Sixers player until Ben Simmons this year when he came back with no improvements

Shaq also shot 80% from the line in practice.
We're not talking about Lonzo Ball here. We're talking about a starter who hasn't made a three in two seasons, and has not outside jumper whatsoever.
One thing some fans tend to think is shooting = being able to hit a 3. Im apart of the Sixers fans who just want Ben to have a reliable 15 foot mid range. If he extends his range or adds a corner 3? Fantastic. Just give me a 15 footer. I really don

Too light skin? Lol? The ****?
Most of the best shooters in history are white or light skinned.
Anyways I agree with the sentiment that he is too ego driven to start shooting and improve while in game by accepting that he’s not going to be perfect out of the gate. That’s his biggest problem. He’s inside his own head.

You a 76ers fan, how about letting him develop before giving up on him :biggums:
If the Knicks had someone that was struggling with 1 part of the game but showed promise and did everything else well, I would get behind (no homo) and root him on. Philly fans really that spoiled??? I guess, since Eagles won recently, Phillies won 10+ years back, and Flyers win often.

Showed promise is what you typed.
Ben for his career is 0-17 from 3. I bet over 50% are half court heaves and not him shooting 3

I feel like if he doesn't want to shoot jumpers then he needs to be better in the post so he can attack his matchup when necessary. Honestly in this era I think all that's necessary for the next generation of hybrid perimeter stars(giannis, ben, zion) is a good high post game. With the spacing available and their size/athleticism it should be one move and in the paint or doubled. I don't like seeing either of those guys around the 3 point line.

Are you on Meth? How in the f*ck can you ever think to call Philly sports fans spoiled? You have no clue. Aren't you a New Yorker? Fck outta here.
As for the OP, good. I think every Sixers fan is happy he's out of FIBA. Since the negatice nacies wanna play armchair psychologist, I'll do it too. Simmons isn't a primadonna who doesn't wanna win - he's really competitive. It's just in his personality to not wanna embarrass himself. He seems like someone who really puts a lot of pride into being/looking cool, acting smooth, etc. He doesn't let it all hang out like Embiid does. It's just a little insecurity. Him with jumpers at this point is similar to a girl you think about asking out for a long time. The longer you wait, the more nervousness builds up in your head and the more you psych yourself out.

Ben Simmons is afraid to fail and afraid of people making fun of him for looking stupid. He has that classic fake arrogance about him to mask a seriously complex problem of perfectionism.
That they coddled him by letting him be the PG by default didn’t help. It’s amazing how different of a path I can see him being on if he was drafted to a team that didn’t cater to his ego, which needed to be the ‘cool’ big point guard or else he’d pout and go to LA.

Huh? Yeah you can
Anyone can hit 5 straight 3's in practice, including guys with broke jumpers.. these guys have playing shit tons of basketball since they were young kids
And no, Simmons cannot shoot.. it isn't that he just decides not to - he just can't.. and btw, Zion's jumper is equally broke.. people will see it this year

Erick Dampier once hit 199 FTs in a row during a Mavs practice. In actual games he shot 62%.
