View Full Version : Why do people move to the U.S. and then fly the flag from their country of origin?

Can anyone explain that?

It's not something I've ever understood, personally.

If your birth country is so amazing, why did you move here? lol...

it's called having pride where you came from.

what i don't understand is why americans can't understand that people move here for work or other personal reasons. just because you come to this country for work, it doesn't mean you should forget your country...especially when this country has zero culture.

plenty of americans move to other countries and do the same sh1t.

go to rocky point, Mexico. you will see a lot of American retirees. they go to the beach wearing their American flag shirt or towel...you won't see 1 Mexican crying about it tho :oldlol:

funny how trump supporters are so insecure. "speak english, this is AMERICA!"
*meanwhile they eat food prepared or harvested by Mexicans*

So you think I agree with Americans retiring to other countries and flying our flag there? No, that's just as stupid. It's literally the exact same thing.

If you moved here for work, it's because this country is better than yours. As such, either fly the American flag or don't fly a flag.

if i see someone flying another country's flag, i'd be like that's pretty cool.

I have zero issues people representing their roots and where they came from. I see a lot of people fly Canadian flags here in Wisconsin all the time. Maybe the person had a better opportunity here, just like many people move out of the U.S. to other countries because of better opportunities. It doesn't mean the country is better or worse. It just means their path and choices led them here or there and they felt here or there was better for their goals.

You make it way too black and white based off assumptions.

I care. It's divisive and stupid to fly the flag of your country of birth. If you're so proud of the fact that you're from there, why are you here?

You literally rage about cops every day. Every. single. day.

Canadians moving here and flying their flag is incredibly stupid. Go back to Canada.

Or is the contention that all of these people value money more than they do pride for their country? If so, again, don't fly that flag... you aren't that proud.

An American retiring to Mexico because of the weather or women or whatever reason is basically saying "I value my existence here in Mexico more than my existence in the United States."

Which in itself is perfectly fine, I'm totally ok with that, as anyone should be. What I don't understand is why if that guy thinks America is so great to the point that he felt the need to fly the flag, that he chose to move to Mexico.

It's contradictory idiocy.

Flying both, I can even get behind that. All good. But just flying your birth flag in a foreign country is stupid.

It’s the classic “no one cares where they are from until they leave it” syndrome. Even Americans will go into another state within America and rep where their from.

no i didn't, it's because no one down there is complaining about it. it's mostly americans who are overzealous idiots about patriotism. you don't realize how silly you look. let your fist unclench and consider that you should be more tolerant of other cultures.

Fly the American flag AND your country of origin, and we've got no problems.

Just your country of origin? Get the **** out.

I'm from Florida and when I leave it'll be because I believe my quality of life will improve in another state. I would never fly the Florida flag or be proud of being from here because this place is a shit hole.

I love how it's now racist to have pride in being american.

Part of assimilating to the culture is speaking the language of the culture - english.

I'm sure mexicans absolutely look down on those americans but they have money. Had a conversation about this with a mexican in Playa and we got along real well. Some asshole americans causing a riot at Wal-Mart there and he had enough of them and told them off. "They aren't in America anymore. They are in my country!"

What about people who hang both the Amerucan flag and a flag representing their familial roots? My friend's grandmother was born in Scotland. In her front yard there is an American flag as well as a Scottish flag. I think it's awesome.

In fact, this thread has motivated me. I'm going to go buy an Italian flag and a Polish flag to celebrate my genetic roots. I'll hang them up right next to the good old stars and stripes.

Nobody in my family is even in my sport. The rest of my friends aren't in my sport. My boss and up the food chain aren't in my sport.

How does one find a group of people to be friends with that are as smart as they are or smarter?

It's like flying a rebel flag.

Because they are low-IQ and have no respect for this country. They just come hear to reap the benefits but could care less about it.

But in essence all they are doing is showing how great his country is in the first place by flying their flag because the freedoms of this country are the only reason why they are allowed to do so. If anything, they are complementing the country and the soldiers that fought for it even if they think they aren't. So anyone flying a flag from another country just to troll looks like a loser for the reasons above. Then they have to reflect on how their country may not allow that as being an option so they catch feelings over it. All those tears do is provide additional fuel the great nation of America. :applause:

I feel you. We've been at this before IIRC, and I think you define intelligence in a narrow way.

My best friend, for example... He once asked me "Do you think you're smarter than me?" and my answer was "Only in ways that are measurable." And it wasn't a cop-out... it's the truth. If he and I sit down and try to solve any mathematically-oriented problem... He's going to lose. But I can't tell you how many times I've been at an impasse in my life, turned to him for advice, and the first thing out of his mouth is precisely the piece of advice that helps me move forward. How do I account for that? I don't even know how I would describe it as an aptitude... wisdom? Maybe not, because he can't seem to get his own life together. All I know is that his mind is configured in such a way that he easily navigates certain things which are more difficult for me.

My step-father... he has trouble with logic sometimes. My mother gets frustrated with him because he will often give non-answers tk very specific questions. Instead of answering, he will ramble for a minute about the topic at hand. "But I asked you _____". It can test one's patience. But holy f*ck, this dude's memory... he can drive 200 miles down back roads and have no problem going back exactly the same way. He can recall the first and last name of everyone he's ever known. When he tells stories, he can lose the audience because he includes so many irrelevant details... just because they're there in his mind. It might not seem very useful all the time, but that is a mental advantage he has that I don't have. Even if I usually feel 'smarter'.

These examples may be crude, maybe vague... but if you have humility, and if you're as committed to facing the truth as you tout yourself to be, I am confident you'll recognize individuals with whom you relate in a similar fashion.

If you're really talking strictly IQ... you might be in for a hard time. There aren't many 140+ humans walking around.

You feel like your critical reasoning capacity makes you alone. I think it should make you a leader. Maybe it's just a matter of perspective. In the end, imo it ties back to our ongoing atheism dialogue. I perceive an innate spiritual union with others - and I think this is one of the ways in which I differ from an actual atheist. And I think it makes it easier to not feel alone.

That's exactly his problem. There are people who are street smart, book smart and everything in-between. Someone can say "if you're so smart, why haven't you figured out a way to make $100,000 a year, or $200k a year, or $300k a year?"

"oh I can but the stress is too much".

OK, well if you are so smart why haven't you found a way that is much less stress? :lol

If someone is so alone because they are so smart, surely using their smarts to make $300k a year stress free and clear should be no problem right?

"oh I'm smart enough I just haven't gotten around to it yet". :lol

And the bullshit keeps going round and round and round.

People can be proud of their heritage while acknowledging that the US offers much more opportunity than where they came from. As a nation of immigrants, we really can't begrudge anyone for flying the flag of their ancestors as a reminder of their lineage as long as it isn't a rebel flag or one of a country in military conflict with the US.

Not ENTIRELY incorrect... but incomplete.

People move here for an idea... for opportunity... I'd say that's something to be proud of, even though our government(the politicians themselves) itself is not.

Patriotism is most certainly no more stupid than say... rooting for a sports team. Yeah, they're both tribalism. And you don't control where you're from... but to move to America... you should be even more proud that you're an American... because you made a conscious choice. It wasn't completely tribal. It wasn't ritualistic.

And I think it makes it easier to not feel alone.

There are varying aspects to intelligence, of course that is undeniable. And there has seldom been a person in the world of which I didn't have something to learn from... which I have to actively remind myself. My IQ isn't 140 though I've tested near that multiple times... I assume it's 20 points lower... but even then I still feel alone. Most people seem to be floating around barely breaking triple digits. :\

I do serve as a leader in various life aspects and I have since my early 20s as I came out of the awkward teenage phase. But do leaders not get lonely?

Heavy lies the crown... I would never want to be president. **** that. I don't like the responsibility of being alone with it all. I don't need that.

So what you're saying is... good luck... well... I probably should give this more than a fleeting thought, it shouldn't be too hard to find a collective, not in today's age.

That's exactly his problem. There are people who are street smart, book smart and everything in-between. Someone can say "if you're so smart, why haven't you figured out a way to make $100,000 a year, or $200k a year, or $300k a year?"

Speaking of revealing themselves... you equate accumulated wealth with intelligence. LMAO. While having money is certainly nice, some of us aren't driven by monetary gain to the level where we would use that to gauge intellect, believe it or not. I like having money, especially when it falls into my lap. But as far as basing my life around that? Eh, no thanks. You don't know my net worth ;D

4th of July recently just happened and a retired American dude I happen to know threw a carne asada and a bunch of Americans (along with Mexicans) were invited...long story short, American flags were waved, country music was played and fireworks were exploded.

None of his neighbors batted an eye, a few of them just gave us some curious looks as if these loco gringos but thats it...the party went well into the night, this is an upscale residential area that has strict rules against loud music past 1am yet no one called the cops on these gringos. Thats another beef I have with Americans, they call the cops on absolutely the stupidest shit ever :facepalm

No need to be so insecure bruh
