View Full Version : How do you feel about defensive flopping as opposed to offensive? More acceptable?

Generally speaking we as a society call out and ridicule the offensive floppers searching for foul calls. We have looked the other way on most everyone who is great drawing charges doing it partially by flopping. THe best of them simply stand with their weight kinda on their heels so they fall on the hit. The worst make it ugly. But we kinda give defenders a pass. So I bring you the curious case of Marcus Smart.....

And it isnt a recent thing. In college he was so known for flopping an entire opposing arena once flopped when he was introduced and when he took free throws:

We all respect great defenders. They are considered tough. The kind of guy you can win with. So I ask you.....

Is that kinda behavior something I you might be interested in?

As a massive fan of Dennis Rodman im in no position to offer criticism if you are.

Divac made me hate defensive flopping way more back in the day but with the rule changes in the modern nba the offensive players took flopping into an insane level.

It's the kind of thing you hate to see your own team fall victim to but accept from your own guy. There have been times Chris Paul had me downright disgusted (he faked his own death once in front of Boogie Cousins) but you'll never see me say anything about Smart.

Flopping with no contact is silly, but when there is contact the player should flop to sell the call. There is a lot more flopping going around that does not get noticed because there was contact

I think it's a side effect of wearing a Celtics jersey. Something about it just turns a man into a complete bitch.

There is no question flopping is smart if it works. Just like traveling.

Anything that helps your team is smart to do if it works. But you can still be a bitch for doing it.

It's a fine line, but I always bought into the 'ya gotta sell the contact' color commentator line when applied to defenders. Not so much for putting the refs on the hook, but for looking after your body. It's a completely different situation when you're trying to draw a charge or facing a bigger guy in the post (whose elbow level just happens to coincide with your head). Once you sprain a knee (or worse) trying to hold your ground and not look like a wuss while letting someone barrel into you, you'll understand why you've gotta sell the contact.

Smart is on some crazy shit though, I can't explain that. And all defenders have gotten more shameless in the past few years, too. 'Selling the contact', like most things, has been taken too far.

Too me, there's a difference between selling contact and straight out flopping. Getting posted up, dude backs into my chest a hard time or two. The 2nd or 3rd time he does it, I'm selling it cause he's getting closer to the basket for an easy bucket or I end up sending him to the line instead of getting that easy bucket.

Bill Laimbeer was the first that I distinctly remember blatantly flopping. Dude would have arms straight up in the paint and already initially falling right before contact was even made.

I would say flopping on defense is more forgivable as it (typically) leads to a turn over instead of free shots. It's also more risky, if you flop on offense and the ref does not call it you can still get a shot or pass off. If you flop on D with no call you just gave them a free layup.

Defensive floppers might do that once every couple games... maybe at their worst 1-2 times a game. where as offensive floppers tend to build their arsenal off it and do it at a much higher rate.

Smart is hard to even describe. He flops so....violently. He flops like hes willing to hurt himself for the call. He will get hurt.....to pretend someone else did it.

Appears that Giannis has taken a position:

Giannis breezed past the Celtics’ hurried defense and entered the paint to attempt a layup when Marcus Smart attempted a charge on him. He sustained the contact as he completed his layup and fell due to the contact. After landing, Giannis told one of his teammates purportedly referring to Smart, “I can’t f*cking stand that p*ssy.”

Should be reviewable during television timeouts if the refs suspect something and T'd up if confirmed.

Flopping is flopping and I have no respect for it. Offensive flopping and defensive flopping are equally egregious.
