It really started when Morey traded the Rockets' 8th pick (Rudy Gay) for Shane Battier in 2006. There was a huge article on how underrated Battier was and how it seemed ridiculous on the surface that you'd trade a potential franchise talent in Gay for a star role-player in Battier.

It was my introduction to Morey, anyway. And for better AND worse, mostly worse, he has been the one guy synonymous with 'analytics', despite his actual moves usually not reflecting a basis in analytics at all.

When this one guy couldnt pass the eye test, so they came up with bunch of in depth metrics to prove how actually great he is

The funny thing is that it's impossible to eye test every player in the league so those spew that analytics don't mean anything are fools. They complement each other.

If you wanted to go down the rabbit hole they're much, much better "analytics" to go follow. PER, BPM, VORP, WS/48 are more of what I'd call simply advanced stats. Analytics goes far beyond that. None of them are a one size fits all and people think that is the case and when they see outliers they discount the thing entirely.

Plus teams have access to databases that track so much more info than is publicly available.

Early 2000s with Mark Cuban and the Mavs I think. He hired his stat teacher from college to analyze and crunch numbers.

Gonna say 2011.
I agree with this

It was mostly coincidence, but the rise of advanced stats coincided with the need to find a different way to put Lebron up there with MJ, since he obviously couldn't win like MJ

And they must've been pretty disappointed the first time the calculations for PER were finished... MJ was #1 again!!!.... and WS/48.... #1 again!!! ...

Infact, only MJ is top 2 in the regular season and playoffs for the "big 4" of advanced boxscore stats (PER, WS/48, VORP, BPM)... And he set the record for plus-minus in 96' (before Curry broke it in 16')
