I came here just now to make a topic on perfect songs.....but instead ill post in here....

Do you feel like we do

NY State of Mind

When the Levee Breaks

Against the wind(also Night moves and Turn the Page far as Bob is concerned)

Blackstar - Thieves in the night

Simple man

Blue Sky

Sara Smile

For very different reasons....but all should be without criticism. And also not a complete list of course.

How do you actually listen to that shit? It's so bad.

Generic auto tune sound... same played-out drum machine style as every hip hop song to come out in the last 6 years... absolutely no bars or lyricism whatsoever... ending 8 straight lines with the same word "mane"... I'm not trying to troll or be a dick, but that is just shitty hypebeast music. You have no taste.

So are these your "perfect songs", or were they supposed to be underrated songs as per OP's request? Because like five of those songs are extremely popular and well-received, so despite how good they are, they couldn't really be considered underrated.

For example, I don't think I've ever met a person who doesn't like "When the Levee Breaks". That's a masterpiece.

Against the Wind is droning and dull though, imo. I know I'm in the minority there. Good lyrics, dull music. Just my opinion.

This is one of those things where I think there probably is an actual objective reality, but is unknowable. Thus, it's subjective.

It's like Hal from Shallow Hal explained to George Costanza... if you were banging some chick that you thought was the hottest on the planet, would you care what anyone else thought? Same concept.

A few from some artists who aren't well-known:

Arlie - "Didya Think" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3__Y4biq_gI)

Givers - "Saw You First" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MBAOEEFzvTg&list=PL69257B974F5EF7AC&index=3)

Peter and the Wolf - "Better Days" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sUDoZ3bMis8)

Peter and the Wolf - "Beggar's Waltz" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MJb9HWvIAWo) (This one is less accessible, but if you can get past its oddity, the lyrics are poignant and beautiful. The rest of the album is much easier listening.)

...

And some lesser-known songs from more well-known artists:

Tool - "The Grudge" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EiR1hmpk-x4) (If you're ever in the mood to go down a long and winding rabbit hole, try and interpret the lyrics to this song. You'll wind up researching things you probably never knew existed.)

Pink Floyd - "Nobody Home" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gNMGrkCNLVk) (****.)

Eminem - "The Sauce" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T_cQ_IZxDHY) (For some reason, everyone I've ever talked to about the Benzino beef knows "Nail in the Coffin", but not this one. This shit is crazy. Three unbroken minutes of supremely savage bars.)

Nas feat. AZ - Life's a B*tch (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HEwSfbE9IXc) (Best song from Illmatic imo. AZ outshines Nas.)

Allman Brothers Band - "Little Martha" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ngyk7wE0Peg) (This is the only Allman bros. song Duane ever wrote. He claimed Jimi Hendrix gave him the song in a dream. It was recorded in October 1971, and Duane died a few weeks later. Mysterious forces at work on this one.)

Band of Gypsys - "Message to Love" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_xTpQem36uA) (Jimi went out on a high note.)

That's enough for now.

Blackstar - Thieves in the night

Damn. Never had heard this one, just checked it out. I like the contrast between Mos's tight, wet rhythmic flow and Talib's rambling, out-of-pocket, more conversational style. Both lyrical geniuses, obviously. I knew it would be good. It is.

I'm assuming you hoped I'd give my opinion, even though you didn't actually ask for it.

As far as the lyrics, I'd have to listen to each song a few more times to have any kind of take. But at first listen, it's Mos all the way. Out-of-pocket can be cool, but he took it pretty far there imo. RZA levels of arrhythmicism.

I don't normally listen to EDM or any of those types of sounds, sounds like the song I linked. I don't listen to stuff like that normally, but this song I feel like is so masterful. I don't know. The mix of the sounds, the timings, Swae's voice and Travis' verse, and then the underlying ode to DJ Screw.

To me this song is just a perfect mix of a lot of things.

Guess I shouldn't have said this is my shit cause I guess that sounds like I meant that type of music. But I meant just that song specifically.

I think I’m a bigger fan of mos but Talib has some verses that just makes it feel like a lot of these people need to quit.

Look in the skies for God, what you see besides the smog
Is broken dreams flying away on the wings of the obscene
The Thoughts that people put in the air
in places where you could get Murdered over a glare, but everything is fair
It's a paradox we call reality
so keepin' it real Will make you casualty of abnormal normality
Killers Born Naturally, like Mickey and Mallory
Not knowing the ways'll get you capped, like an NBA salary

And people will listen to it....not be impressed.... and be blown away by some of these kids acting like asses.

I’m not saying that songs meant to have fun and party to can’t be good....I’m saying...these guys are putting together shit that is ridiculous....for nothing but underground props and hopefully some left over tour dates.

Listen to Respiration. I’ve been trying to decide for years who had the better verse. Talib on respiration or mos def on thieves.

Oh man that's gonna be Talib on Respiration for me even though they're really close. They made an amazing duo, played off eachother so well with their flow

Yeah, we all have those random songs we like from genres that we don't. I really wasn't trying to be a dick. Not trying to be super nice either, just calling it like I see (hear) it. Do you, bro, don't change just for a punk like me.

Underrated imo are songs by popular artists. Songs that get overlooked from big stars because the fanbase focus on the hits.

What better place to start than the most popular artists of all time.

This song is heartbreaking (specially this performance).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BT5j9OQ7Sh0

Nothing crazy great about it, just a very solid song that gets overlooked.

Perhaps the greatest artist that's not the Beatles (come at me).

From an underrated overlooked album, this song is ethereal and perhaps the best song from a father to a son that's not 'Hey Jude'.

Now to hip hop

From the GOAT (yeah I said it), this shit is perfect. Should be studied on how to make a great commercial rap song. Flow, cadence, delivery, rhyming, lyrics, everything is there.

Ayyyy I forgot about those boys. They have so many great songs that would be worthy of posting in a thread like this. "Idioteque", "Airbag", "Let Down", "Fake Plastic Trees"... literally all of In Rainbows... man. Thank you for reminding me that they exist.

...

As far as the Beatles, I think their very first UK release, "Please Please Me", is an underrated song. It's about telling your girl to give you head, and Lennon's rhythm is deceptively tricky.

They are definitely not the GOAT band by the way. They had so many great songs, but waaaaay too many terrible ones. Almost every McCartney tune is pure filler. John Lennon >>>>>>>>

If you want stuff that sounds more like "rock" (guitar-oriented, less experimental), check out their first two albums, Pablo Honey and The Bends.

If you like the electronic stuff, I think In Rainbows is their best album.

Most would consider OK Computer to be their magnum opus.

Radiohead is a fantastic band. Getting into them can only make your life better.

I guess you could pretty much take your pick among prog rock, such as anything from King Crimson's debut or Red from 1975 except for Providence. One More Red Nightmare is one such particular standout that I like that is never actually played on the radio or plugged in a famous film directly involving the creator of the piece of music.

Im a Radiohead stan, as hard as I stan for them I will be honest and say they're not the most accessible or easiest artist to get into. Their music is all over the place (in a good way) as they draw influences from everyone like Aphex Twin, Can to Charles Mingus and even FlyLo.

I would start with the acoustic stuff first unless you've already acquired a more experimental taste.

Like Promethus mentioned, In Rainbows is perhaps their best well rounded album. It's a combination of their previous work. It touches on their EDM sound, their jazz influence and Greenwood's amazing orchestrations.

"Astronomy Domine" doesn't really qualify as underrated, as it's probably the most famous song from "Piper at the Gates of Dawn". Do you like the song "Flaming"?

P.S. Being a grammar nazi in this place is extremely cringe-worthy. We're trying to have a good discussion about music - you and I are both musicians - why muddy it up with bullshit like that when you know damn well what I was saying? It just makes you seem like an uptight dick.

I'd have to say the biggest drawback to Radiohead is that their music is too melancholic and depressing, and too much of it is based around the Egyptian minor.
