Let's face it

MJ won 6 rings by developing rookies

Lebron won 3 rings by forming ready-made teams of star vets

Kareem wasn't the best player for most of his rings

Russell only played 2-pointer basketball

Only mj has it all .. everyone else has blemishes or weakening factors

So did MJ.
MJ won 6 rings with a 3-point line, while Russell never played with a 3-pt line

Also, MJ was good at threes anytime it mattered - he shot 35.2% on 2.2 attempts in 85-93' playoffs... 39% on 3.8 attempts in 91-93' playoffs... 43% on 3.3 attempts in 91-93' Finals.

MJ was also good at threes anytime he tried - he attempted less than 1.5 threes every year except 90' and 93', when he had 3+ attempts at 38% and 35%, respectively.

Again, MJ has the most rings and FMVP's in 3-pointer basketball (modern era), so he's the GOAT...

You can't take a joke if your life depended on it.

But to be serious: No 3 pointers make the game harder. -3 is a 2 possession game.

LeBron stans are ignorant children who need their idol to be the GOAT, as they vicariously associate him with their own identities.

That i've watched live its definetly MJ. I watched past prime Bird and Magic though and they where phenomenal better than Kobe Bryant. Lebron? He is among the best top 10 probably but he hasn't delived according to his expectations: Lebron is a better passer than MJ, bigger and heavier but he is not a better rebounder according to his position even Bird and Baylor where better rebounders despite the fact that Lebron is 6'8 ft and over 250 lbs, a poor rebounder in regard to his athletic capacity; strength, vertical leap, weight etc. MJ was the best scorer from the perimeter that ever lived and he is also the best defensive SG ever and was till about age 34 35. Lebron should study Malone and Barkley and play power pointforward more than in the perimeter. He is not as skilled individually as a shooter from the perimeter in the likes of Kobe and MJ ofcourse. Lebron did not exceed his expectations.

There are only a few Kobe fans who go around hating on players...hell, most of us acknowledge how great Lebron was too. Most of us have him locked into the top 10.

Most reasonable people have him in the top 10 at least. For me he's around 5th or 6th;

1 - MJ
2 - Bird
3 - Magic
4 - Kareem
5 - Kobe
6 - LeBron

You could argue with Kobe and LeBron switching spots... but LeBron's got so many black marks on his resume, he drops out of the top 5 for me. The only thing LeBron will have by the end of his career is an accumulation of stat totals (and some averages) but even then you have Wilt that completely destroys him on that front and Kareem gives him a run for his money as well.

It's amazing how underrated Shaq has become in these discussions. I don't know if it's because his career fizzled out in a less than ceremonious manner( bouncing from team to team), but the guy I saw from 92 to 2015 was one of the most immovable forces I've ever seen.... in any sport.

Mr Feeny
07-31-2019, 11:28 AM
True. Why ISN'T Shaq up there? Cumulative totals and accomplishments are one thing, but his peak is higher than anyone today and anyone other than Jordsn and Wilt all time.
At his best, he was rag rolling every center in basketball and making legends look like scrubs.

If this is a discussion about the best basketball player ever, why wouldn't we put him up there?

From 1995-2004/2005, he was a human video game. I've yet to see a player like him dominate the way he did. Steph, perhaps, offensively (in 2016). But Steph - even at his best - wasn't Shaq.

I think it's for reasons like his suspect work ethic, or maybe because he bounced from Phoenix to Cleveland to Boston his last 3-4 years. Some may say because he didn't win during the 90s when the center position peaked( even though he was individually dominant as a rookie) Or maybe because he only has one MVP( which is hilarious). I don't know really...I can only speak to what I *saw* with my own two eyes. I saw Shaq's first game.....I knew I was seeing 'the next guy' from day one.

He didn't win in the 90's but as you said, he was still dominant. He got the Magic to the finals in 1995 and found himself facing Hakeem (Nick Anderson choking the 4 consecutive free throws in game 1 to give Houton home court advantage and set the pace for the series, didnt help). He was still great in the series, though.

While most of the great centres were aging or gone by the early 2000s, he still dominated Mutumbo, Sabonis, Duncan, Robinson and Smits.

I also hate that the last few years of someones career seem to be playing a role in how someone views their individual dominance. Shaq was a shadow of himself in his last few years, as was Jordan in Waahington, as was Hakeem in Orlando. But that was an decrepit version of an all time great. It's insane to hold that against him.

I agree, I certainly don't. I'm trying to come up with reasons for why someone else may possibly overlook him in this discussion( I've seen things like this said on forums, this one included). As far as I'm concerned he has as much a case to be at worst top 3, just based on sheer dominance, as anyone. But that's me.

Based on mainstream thinking, I have Lebron at #10

MJ
Bird
Kobe
Magic
Wilt
Kareem
Shaq
Duncan
Russell
Lebron

Most mainstreamers have him higher, but the 9 guys ahead of him each have clear-cut arguments over him, so this is his floor mainstream ranking...

Otoh, based on my own knowledge that Lebron would have exactly zero rings without teaming up (just like Nash, CP3, Westbrook, Harden and other skillsets of similar caliber), I have Lebron outside the top 15, probably #16 or 17..

This is based on his skillset being incapable of winning rings (like CP3, Nash, or similar ball-dominators), and his lack of pure shooting ability or post game.. It's also based on his acumen and uncoachability, since he thinks the team is better when he holds the ball a preposterous 12 minutes per game, rather than moving the ball.

The players themselves say Kobe >>

They understand how much he motivated and galvanized a team to come correct on both ends of the floor.. Nothing less was tolerated, and Kobe's presence and passion for the game had them hype to play every night

They also understand that with Kobe, the team can use a system so the supporting cast plays good quality basketball that Kobe fits his game into... This contrasts with lebron-ball, where the team isn't playing quality basketball and therefore loses without him - the system is "maximize lebron's stats".. and yet they still aren't the best

All time lists are kind of pointless tbh...but there is a pattern I have noticed. Nobody knows where to rank Wilt and Bill Russell. Some have them near the top, some near the bottom of the top 10, and others leave them out entirely.

Some people have Kobe and Shaq top 5, others have them both near the bottom of the top 10...some leave Kobe out of it entirely.

Some rank Lebron top 3, others barely have him top 10..

But one thing that stays consistent? MJ and KAJ are almost ALWAYS in the top 3. I mean uncanny, those two everyone agrees are among the 3 best to ever play in the game. I've literally seen EVERY NAME associated with those two in the top 3, but never without MJ and Kareem.

Interesting.

What this leads me to believe personally is that there is subconsciously a gap that we all agree with.

1-2
GAP
3-11

Because WHO is to say who is GREATER between guys like Shaq, Kobe, Lebron, Magic, Bird, Duncan, Wilt, Russell, Hakeem?? Put them in any order ffs, these are the best of the best..whose to say who is wrong and who is right

And then you got guys like the Big O, Karl Malone, KD, Dr. J, John Stockton, David Robinson etc...who are all there when it comes to skill level, but JUST DON'T have the titles to compare to the top guys. And if they do, there is something behind those titles...whether it is they got it late (big O and Drob) or they joined a ****ing 73 win team to get two lmao.

But the top guys? The top 2 should be set in stone. Then, go ahead and mix and match the following 8 players any way you want 3-11, you will never be more right than the next person.

Mr Feeny

There is a common factor in the ESPN, Fox Sports,SI, Realgm, and ISh lists.
If I'm not mistaken,Kobe is outside the top 11 in all of them. Seems consistent enough. He doesn't belong in the 3-11 slot that you talked about.

Lebron is usually in the top 5 at worst, as well. He is entrenched there.

Most reasonable people have him in the top 10 at least. For me he's around 5th or 6th;

1 - MJ
2 - Bird
3 - Magic
4 - Kareem
5 - Kobe

Bird 2nd

Why don't we do what realgm does, start a poll thread for each position on the all time list. Then we can actually get ISH's top 3...and top 10 while we are at it.

This is a poll for first place, best ever. Kobe fans are gonna vote MJ because we obviously understand he's the GOAT along with all other fan bases...the only fan base delusional enough to stick with their favorite rather than the best is the Lebron fan base, as the numbers clearly show. Click on the names and you'll see it's all stans that voted for Bron.

Meanwhile, everyone else collectively agrees that Jordan is the GOAT. It's not even close.

Eh I remember him being pretty harsh during that bad 10-11 period. I won’t dispute lists being fluid but doesn’t mean they can’t be obviously wrong(yes ik there’s a lot of wiggle room however). If he beat the Mavs, and lost the 4peat to the Spurs, then goes back home and wins 2/4 of the Cavs goes at it. He's the GOAT. He would probably have to 3peat now, just to shake discussions up a little. He has played some teams though... That Warriors team that he's played had the perfect modern day model and personnel. Never! He hates Kobe, 3ball overall is pretty pro Kobe unless it's against Jordan in any measure.

I voted Jordan. Where did I read it .someone said he is the protagonist of the NBA story.and there's truth to that so ...
And I know it has no relevance to their skill sets but u lot don't actually do the same so why not. Lol

I think it might be bird. Not the best resume and injuries but in terms of doing what ever it takes to win, a guy you could probably slot onto any team in nba history, the best, the worst, and he'd be able to fit in and ball out and make them better.

Mj or Kareem have the goat resumes. Russell and wilt are right there too but mj and Kareem have semi modern accomplishments and they have stats, accolades and Rangz.

Larry bird (1), haha o well.

Edit: Larry is the only player on this list to make a top15 guy fight him haha. Nuff sed.

MJ leading the poll by a landslide is expected. But for Kobe to have more votes than Kareem is not only wrong, but it's disrespectful.

MJ usually wins these polls by more or less the same margin he is leading here...FM magazine a few months back did a poll asking who the GOAT was and MJ won by about 70% of the vote. On Ranker he is also leading by that margin. Just checked Ranker and MJ killing it with everyone, men, women, Gen Z, Millennials, Gen X and Baby Boomers

Not denying Jordan would win most polls. But realistically those polls are majorly influenced by pop culture over actually basketball knowledge. Reason why Lebron will come 2nd in today's polling. Look at this poll. We really think Kobe is 3rd all-time?

Jordan is a marketing phenomenon. If a mainstream poll was taken about soccer I'm sure Beckham and Ronaldo would score higher.

When polling players it would be a lot more realistic. Jordan would like win but it would be a lot closer.

What this poll also tells me is that there are a lot less Lebron alts than people make it out to be. And that Simon is just a spool story. And that there are a lot more Jordan alts. No way there are 70 regular posters on here :lol

Players with mostly point guard skillsets can't be goat (i.e. Nash, Cp3, lebron, Magic, Westbrook, Oscar, harden, etc)

They mostly turn teammates into play-finishers or spot-up shooters, so they can't elevate players or a team like other player types

The "spot-up shooter" result for teammates doesn't yield the best teams or teamwork and needs extra talent to offset the weaker teamwork and reach a championship level

Otoh, the historical record shows that the off-ball wing skillset results in the most rings (MJ, Bird, Kawhi, Dirk, Kobe, KD, Curry), the best teams, and the most organic teamwork

Damn straight, right behind MJ and KAJ.

Like I've said in the past, the top 2 is cemented by MJ and KAJ. After that, spots 3-11 are all subjective...you can argue any player in any spot, no one will be more right than the other.

Shaq
Bird
Magic
Wilt
Kobe
Hakeem
Duncan
LeBron
Big O

Pick any one of those players, and you can build an argument for them being position 3 or position 11. It's very subjective. An old head might sit here and spit straight fire convincing people of how Oscar or Wilt is the 3rd greatest of all time...a youngster can gass up LeBron and say how he's 3rd, fly cat like myself can make a convincing argument for Kobe or Shaq.

They are all great. The GOATs. MJ and KAJ are at the tip top, after that pick who you want.

EDIT: Left out Bill Russell...make that 3-12.

Funny, he doesn't have the impact of Duncan yet he has beaten Duncan countless times in the playoffs as the lead man, INCLUDING when Shaq was on the Lakers.

Against the spurs, Shaq battled Duncan and Robinson while Kobe was guarded by Malik Rose:lol

Why would anyone need to make anything up? Put in those tapes and educate yourself.
Kobe being guarded by garbage while Shaq manhandled Duncan and Robinson doesnt make Kobe valuable.

And as I said,on the biggest stage - the finals - he wet the bed as usual. Now sit down, pipe down, and stop crying.
