[QUOTE]Doctors have turned the brain signals for speech into written sentences in a research project that aims to transform how patients with severe disabilities communicate in the future.

The breakthrough is the first to demonstrate how the intention to say specific words can be extracted from brain activity and converted into text rapidly enough to keep pace with natural conversation.

Potentially huge discovery for some stroke patients depending on what areas of the cortex have been damaged. Could aid in their recovery time being able to communicate their needs better.

This is actually terrifying. Thought crimes will become a real thing.

A scary sci-fi slant on it would be what are the limitations to the translation?

Meaning, not every thing that you think is communicated through speech. For a reason.

I wonder if this invention bypasses the, "second thought/bite my tongue" mechanism and gives 100% unfiltered truth. That's an interrogation tool that would have many folks salivating at the thought.

Hell, that potentially changes the law and criminal proceedings as we know it.

Pretty amazing. This will be a breakthrough for some individuals with disabilities and speech impediments.
