If you listen to the call Doug Collins puts it on Kobe:

Dwight gets the shame from most fans im sure. But im not sure Lebron didnt really have the biggest ****up off not rotating.
Gotta help the helper too. Dont just give the wing an angle to the rim when the big is out of position.
In order....
Its:
Kobe/Lebron
Dwight
To me.
Kobe gambled to allow the drive....Lebron didnt step over to deny the basket....
Dwight is a center trying to slide his feet with a 2 guard running downhill.
Dwight gets the shame....but Kobe and Lebron left his ass flapping in the breeze.
Dwight has taken a lot of unearned and earned beatings over the years....but the two GOAT candidates(let their fans tell it at least) did him dirty on this one.
I think this poster should be striken from Dwights record and renamed "Rudy Fernandez dunks on team USA".
Do I have a second?

I don't blame Dwight not even a bit. He was moving laterally trying to defend a much lighter and smaller player who was running head on towards the basket. He still made a great contest of the dunk, nice effort by him.
Kobe gambled trying to go for a steal, bad move.
Lebron should have been there to help Dwight, he was lazy and displayed no intensity.
So if I had to blame one the most, that would be Lebron because he didn't even try.

Kobe didn't really gamble... he just got shook and then tried to poke the ball away in vain after the fact. That's not a discredit to Kobe, it's a credit to the offensive player. But Kobe is where the defense broke down.
If LeBron leaves his man, that guy has a quick dump off to LeBron's man for a layup.
Dwight adjusted but he didn't adjust quickly enough to cut the lane off on the right. You can see the hitch/hesitation to switch which resulted in the blow by.
There is nobody to "blame" but if we're assigning blame, Dwight gets the most, despite the fact that he was clearly trying the hardest.
I suppose part of this also comes with knowing the offensive player... if you've scouted him properly, and let's say... he's not one to make that quick dump off pass... then the answer quickly switches to LeBron easily being most at fault. Also, to be honest, LeBron seems to be more interested in watching everything unfold rather than moving to help Dwight or even making sure his man is boxed out. He's just there for the ride. Not an unfamiliar scene.
More importantly than all of this... why the **** is Kobe standing at the three point line holding his arms up in exasperation and shaking his head like his teammates suck? Idiot.
1) Dwight
2) LeBron
3) Kobe

Lebron is the main one. At least the other 2 tried.

I'm giving them all 3 equal blame for the way it played out because they each made a mistake to allow the play to happen.
Kobe's steal attempt took him completely out of the play and only got worse with the illegal screen.
Dwight got yammed on. I get it though he was a big defending in space and that's tough.
Lebron was a spectator. Perhaps if he helped off his man it's a dump off for an easy bucket but that's the risk you take.

Kobe, whom Doug Collins justifiably called out. Kobe was also seen blaming Dwight when lining up for free throws immediately after. But this isn't new behaviour for Kobe. The shrimp dicced snake will blame anyone but himself everytime.

Kobe, anytime you lose your man that badly there's a good chance they're going to score, can't blame the help defense for not being able to properly cover.

This doesn't happen if LeBron rotates. This one is simple.
The guy Bron is guarding is on the opposite block, he doesn't have far to go.
I can't see who it is but Lebrons teammate right beside him on the weak side is there to drop down on Brons guy when he rotates.

Kobe is almost certainly frustrated by LeBron not rotating. I'd be pissed off at him too.

The way he could play 1 vs 2 defense in the half court and still block or heavily contest is just a big reason why his impact far exceeded the counting numbers.

Kobe's totally at fault here. He's the only defender pressing here. I doubt it was a coaches' decision. So why gamble on a known slasher? Should've picked him up at the 3 pt line.

Weren't you like 15 back then? And how does this dunk lose you money?

well, it was a 2, roughly 6'6" and drove from the top of the key with a set up screen outside the 3 point line.
Lebron actually played good defense with Dwight 'boxing' out
it's a basic no 3 defense, and plays like this slowly freezes out shooters on your team
they didn't really have any real 7 footers, if anything, the argument is the player guarding the corner 3 could have moved to the free throw line and do a "switch" with Dwight on assignment
but then they also didn't have any real PF on the team, or Kobe wouldn't have had to gamble.
the U.S. were out-rebound by 6, 31-37

This play doesn't happen if Kobe doesn't gamble up the top pointlessly.
He didn't even get taken out by a pick. He reached.

Kobe deserves the blame for the gamble but Rudy looked like peak Wade on that play, god damn. He took athletic peak Dwight all the way to the rim and yammed it on him.

i was actually NINE
i was already a young hustler playing the market
there was an over/under on how many points kobe would allow on the defensive end because people took his defense for a joke
i believed in all the kobe defense/leadership hype back then though and took the under

The switch was going to happen regardless of if Kobe didn't reach around.
Players get beat to the rim all the time. If teams played help D off the weakside post like that consistently it would be the worst defense in the history of the NBA.
Thiers blame to go around but the question is who's most to blame and it's LeBron no question about it.

Gambling early leaves gaps, it leaves players out of position and throws everybody's timing off.

That one is 100% on Kobe.
At the same time the help defense was non-existent.

Dwight switched onto him though. Dwight saw the pick and roll/pop being set and he was ready to switch off. He was in good position, he was balanced and saw the guy coming 10 feet away. The guard just got by him
This penetration baseline scenario happens all the time. Teams rarely get Yammed on because help defense is there to force a tough layup or another pass.
LeBron is usually really good at this scenario. But not here. I think LeBron may have just assumed Dwight was going to handle it himself. He was at his defensive peak back then.

I came across this searching for an old Dwight topic on why he shouldn’t be in the nba anymore(like 2-3 years ago) to bring back up along with a topic from like 5 years ago on how Rondo shouldn’t be in the nba anymore to pair with the talk of Melo not belonging in the nba 2 years ago and do a whole “Why can’t people stop overreacting to decline in superstars” thing.
Instead I was found this....and feel a need to repeat....that dunk shouldn’t be on Dwights record.
