1. A Job offer letter with no set start date?

or

2. A verbal offer and start date with location and time?

I was offered the state job on 7/25 after the background was complete in 3 weeks and still waiting on written confirmation. All I have as of 8/5 is that I start on 19th of August, 8:30am and the floor of the building. The HR lady said a email will be coming a couple of weeks before the start date which will be part of orientation that I have to complete before Day 1.

Well I can't take my current job anymore and gave one week notice last friday because it's just too crazy. So my last day is this Thursday and wanted to give myself a week off before the new job starts. The only thing my dumb ass forgot to ask in addition to the start date and time along with the email is

Who do I ask for once I arrived on the 6th floor on 8/19?

Who is the email with the orientation links coming from?

I been coming home checking the mailbox everyday after work and nothing. I plan to call the lady back on wednesday.

Hell, I'll tell you what I did. I was at my previous job for about 3 years. It was a call center and I was working for the HIP program here in Indiana, (Healthy Indiana Plan). Its a plan for those who aren't eligible for medicaid or medicare here. So they pay a monthly fee based on their income. If they have no income, their payments are a $1 a month and that was most people who are on the program.

This is the type of job where you know the program is bullshit. Its great when it works but it doesn't work for about half the people on it and also in many cases, they don't get to keep the dr. they've had for years because the dr. doesn't participate in the program, or doesn't accept Anthem for example.

So anyway, I'm now working at National Government Services but we basically work for Anthem. But while I was trying to get this job, I barely even had a start date because I was waiting for them to do my background check, drug test, etc. I literally finally got word on a Thursday that everything was good and I could be in the next training class that next Monday. I walked right into my bosses office who I had a great relationship with and told her that was my last day. That was still technically "notice" and still formally sent an email of my resignation. It was actually super hard for me to do that because I HATED the job but I loved my co-workers and my supervisors because none of the issues with the program had anything to do with us. It was all between the state and Mike Pence inability to know wtf is going with our healthcare system even though he's the one who actually implemented these changes and had a hand in how its all set up.

This job called me out the blue too, I never applied for it but I was applying to plenty of jobs. It was like a fairy tale. The dude was literally texting me like he knew me, lol. And I'm super cynical so of course I didn't believe him but he was dead serious.

Do you know I never had to show up to the staffing agency or anything? Did a phone interview and started right away. Performance was so good I got hired on permanent in 2 months so I've been permanent since Feb 2018. Started in Dec 2017.

That probably doesn't really address your question but I wanted to share my experience with you since I was in that same position not too long ago.

Its the best move I've ever made too. Now I'm an indexer and everything is just based on production so there's hardly any rules about hours, when to take breaks, dress code or anything. I can listen to my music or watch something on my phone while I"m at work. I don't make a ton of money but I do make more than I was making before and most importantly for me at this point is I'M NOT STRESSED OUT BY JOB AT ALL.

I absolutely can't stand talking on the phone but I've had plenty of call center jobs because I'm good at them and whenever I was in a pinch and needed a job quick, I resorted to call centers. I know how to talk to people, how to empathize and I know how to put myself in the other person's shoes. But man do those jobs take a toll on your own well being hearing all these stories who have all kinds of health issues going on but can't get treatment for all kinds of bullshit reasons all relating to how the system is set up. My job was just set up to take as many calls as possible, not to really help anyone. We had 4 min and 30 seconds to be off the call and we have to go over EVERYTHING with them in that time span, their coverage, their options, and thats after we have to verify their identity because of hippa laws. I never knew how many people don't have their SS# memorized or hell even their address or phone number.

But I would say keep the faith. I know you haven't heard back from the lady but call her like you said. I'm sure it'll work out and you'll have that new job and hopefully be stress free (from your job that is).

Im just hoping to get some kind of written confirmation before Friday so I can enjoy 9 days to myself and travel and not stress. But then I guess If I am not hearing anything about not to show up then it's cool. The only written confirmation I have in regards to the job offer is the conditional offer sent on 7/5 and the background check was completed in 3 weeks. I thought after I accepted over the phone that a email or letter would follow confirming everything discussed on the phone

you hate your job enough for anything fishy as long as it can be held liable for consistent income relaying to your financial situation

the futuristic answer is 2. as unemployment reaches practically 0, a job letter is like a certificate that isn't required due to exceptional abilities.

causing answer 2 to occur, and in the environment in which unemployment drops, it is near impossible for 1 to lie

I'm in kind of the same predicament.

I interviewed Friday of last week. 30 minutes after the interview they called me but I didn't see the call or voicemail until Saturday I shot a follow up email at 10am. Director who interviewed me responded at 9pm saying she called to offer the job and left a vm. Check my vm, now I'm tight. Called her first thing yesterday morning and she said she forwarded me to HR and they should be reaching out to me and handle it from there.

One entire day has gone by, no message or calls from HR.

My guess? They're either too busy, or, they're stalling on doing more interviews. The latter sounds unethical if true.

Regardless, I can't put my 2 weeks notice in without signing any documents (W4) or an offer letter. I'll reach out tomorrow and let them know that's the case in the event they do get back to me with my start date I said I could start during the interview. It'll have to be pushed back now. Not that I care that much.

Correct me if I'm wrong but you don't HAVE to give a job a 2 week notice do you? I thought you just had to give them some notice and in my case, I gave them my notice the same day I quit, lol. But I thought the 2 week notice was just a courtesy on your part and also in case you need to come back to that job in the future.

I wait until I'm officially hired. Get all documents in order and into their system. Ask for a start date a month after signing contract to help transition into new job. Put your 2 weeks notice in your former job. Take a vacation

Correct. But wtf is taking so long for HR to contact me?

My boss told me I don't necessarily need to give a two weeks notice.

I personally think they're still interviewing people and wanna have their cake and eat it too

That sounds kind of weird. Calling to offer someone a job and not responding back. I heard of that for interview scheduling but not when they want to offer someone a job

In my case, I want to know why it's taking so f*cking long for this email and letter to arrive confirming I am a employee for the state. If you call and offer me the job then a written confirmation should go out that day

But I was told where to go and what time to be there and that is where I will be on 8/19 with a copy of the conditional offer letter before the background was complete.

That actually happened to me ironically before I got my current job. The lady called me and told me I had the job and that I could start and everything, only to leave me a message later that same evening saying her supervisor had actually given the job to someone else and she didn't know before she called me. All I got was a sorry basically. I was pissed but its funny how stuff works out since I have a better job now anyway.

Well I called the same woman on Wednesday and she said....."hold let me get your paperwork" and then came back to the phone. She told me to call her on Tuesday, the 13th if I dont receive the new employee email by 12th.

So today was my last day at the NUT HOUSE and didn't even say bye just walked the **** out. They better have my check next friday

It's all official now, received the email from the state administration office confirming start date and position and links to complete new employee orientation.

I was getting concerned because already resigned from the job I started on 7/1 and only had verbal confirmation of a start date but now I can breathe easy lol
