View Full Version : Why is Lebron below average at Free Throws?

Honestly there's millions of people in the world who can at least shoot 80% from free throws, hell I was that good at free throws in the 6th grade.

I just don't understand why Lebron not only isn't good at free throws...he's below average.

Someone help me.

Something about not bulldozing his way to a rim shooks him up.

Plus, as we saw in 2015, he ain't a good volume jump shooter.

He has bad mechanics and fundamentals...partly due to illegal ped use

What I don’t get is how he got worse. He used to at least be average.

I think it's a mental problem, like he shook himself or something only at free throws. He has no problem with hitting tough shots during regular game play...but when everything stops and everyone is watching him at the free throw line...it's like he gets into his own head or something.

I was always excited to shoot free throws because they were an easy two points.

I used to think it was related to him being a power player because it was rare to see muscular guys with touch from the line. But he's improved his jumper all over the floor at various points, so why not ft too?

6 finals losses got him rattled.

They did a study on this, as a lot of people believed height was directly correlated with FT%.

It was in fact weight that played the biggest factor. Makes sense as well, particularly if the player is muscle dense which LeBron is.

More moving parts, more oxygen needed to fuel the muscle, and more room for error as a whole.

To put this into perspective, he would have been beat by Kevin Hart.

But a lot of big men shoot better than he does. As a general rule, perhaps.but it isnt completely accurate.

Have you seen his midrange splits? They're atrocious and have been for his career.

There really aren't all that many big men that are heavier than him.

Oh come on. Dirk, Gasol etc all shot better. He isn't exactly a centre. Durant is comfortably taller. Not sure weight is more of a determing factor than height is , either.

mental weakness, tbh. I don't think he's below average as a FT shooter, though, but he's below average for an all time great non-big.

I do think his body type probably makes it harder, but for a guy who can shoot pretty decently outside, I don't buy the "Shaq excuse" (that is, that's he's too big to effectively shoot FTs.)

However, it also doesn't make sense people comparing NBA players playing 40 minutes a game banging into people to what they shot in 6th grade. Lebron is not really a bad FT shooter, he's just not reliable like MJ, Kobe, Bird, Magic etc... basically every other top 10 guy who isn't a big. Dude should be around 85%.

Well, I guess he's shooting pretty bad at the FT line now haha. Yikes. I didn't see how awful his numbers were last year. Didn't watch much LABRON. To me, I'd count on him to make about 75% of his FTs until the game is close down the stretch then brick some clutch ones.

All of them have less muscle mass than Lebron, and that's what plowking is talking about.

Lebron should be compared body wise to Karl Malone, Shaq, Howard, David Robinson and players like this when it comes to free throws.

Howard is perfectly able to make the free throws during practice:

We know why he doesn't during real games. Same goes for Lebron.

Is this a bad joke? Or are you a Lebron hater masquerading as a fan? There is nothing similar about lebron and Shaq/Robinson's body weights or heights. They not only dwarf him, but weight a lot more than he does.

Moreover, how have you just decided that muscle mass matters more than height or body mass?

It's a different situation in a game. Practice is pressure-free. There is nobody around. In game situations always differ. We've heard tons of stories about bad shooters being decent in practice. But that doesnt simulate a real game. Fatigue. Pressure. The crowd. All play a role.

It's mental.

It is probably his shooting technique and his arm muscle, most big arm muscle guys like Shaq, Wilt, Howard are always below avg, even Ben Simmons.

Karl Malone and Barkley are same size or even heavier and shot better than LeBron.

75-78 is more like average, 80 is good.

I would rank it:

sub 50 - just quit basketball

50-55 - absolutely horrible

57-62 - very bad

64-68 - bad

70-73 - below average/not good-not that bad

75-78 - average

80-84 - good, but not great

86-89 - great, fantastic, pure shooter.

90-94+ - GOAT
