Im studying in Bavaria and im member of a fencing fraternity. I have the advantage in drinking and duelling with sabres. Other than that AW wins. he is young and currently at the police academy

I used to be among the worst when we played some kind of beer drinking game after school in 10th grade.

Some fraternities are far right or even the extreme right. But they are a minority. My fraternity is politcally conservative.

Yap. normally we have to train 1hour 2x a week with a fencing master for 3-5 years. The intersting part with german academic fencing is, that we are fencing with sharp sabres and you are only allowed to hit the face. Furthermore its not allowed to move during the duell.

There is no real winner. To face the sharp sarbre without the right to move is challenging enough. The goal is to build a courageous and dashing character and to control your emotions and your fear.

fraternities consist of Burschenschaften, Corps, Landsmannschaften and Turnerschaften. They are all conservative. My fraternity has problems with Antifa cowards on a regular basis.

Like i wrote. The goal is not to win but to defeat your fear and to build a specific character trait. in my fraternity, politics are not important but rather german culture and heritage. We are officially even non political. But tbh, peoole who are patriots and interested in german culture, history and heritage are basically always conservative

true... i guess if you allow a real sword fight somebody is probably gonna die.

So they have to add so many rules to it you cant move and only slash each others cheeks and foreheads up?

Well, MMA is (imo) superficial and full of money and attention whores. in contrast to that, academic fencing is only for your own character developpment. Further more education is very important in my fraternity. Not only regarding your university studies but also regarding society. For example i learned all the classical dances.

No that is not what i was trying to say. I meant that the objectives are different. Academic fencing is not about winning or money. Its about honor and bravery. Its about building a certain character trait, to overcome and control your fear. No hiding, no moving. Just you, your opponent within an arm length distance and the sharp sabre. academic fencing has its origins in Germany and a long tradition.
until world war2' the duelling scar ("schmiss" in german) was a sign of masculinity and power and also associated with status and social elitarism
