"When they had crucified him, they divided up his Trump steaks by casting lots. And sitting down, they built a big beautiful wall over him there. Paid for by Rome, the Emperor himself wrote the check. Billions and billions of denarii. Many people said it couldn't be done. But he got it done. Above his head they placed the written charge against him: this is Trump, the King of the Jews."

This tweet...
“Thank you to Wayne Allyn Root for the very nice words,” Trump tweeted. “’President Trump is the greatest President for Jews and for Israel in the history of the world, not just America, he is the best President for Israel in the history of the world…and the Jewish people in Israel love him like he’s the King of Israel.’”
“‘They love him like he is the second coming of God,’” the quote continued. “‘But American Jews don’t know him or like him. They don’t even know what they’re doing or saying anymore. It makes no sense! But that’s OK, if he keeps doing what he’s doing, he’s good for all Jews, Blacks, Gays, everyone. And importantly, he’s good for everyone in America who wants a job.’”

I learned today that the U.S. did buy several Virgin Islands from Denmark during WWI and WWII out of fear that the Germans could use them as a base. Also the U.S. has tried to buy Greenland several times, offering $100 million in the late 1940s.
So it's not a crazy idea that Trump just came up with out of the blue. His response to being rejected is typical Trump though.

Why?
Greenland is under self-rule and they are recognized as a separate people under international law. They have control over their natural resources and are responsible for their own policing and judiciary. They also have their own official language. Denmark only retains control of foreign affairs and defense.
Are you seriously asserting that this Greenland foolishness isn't absurd?

The US is in a much better position to provide defense, militarily and strategically. I would think if the transaction went through that Greenland would still retain self-rule.

I don't think you understand. Denmark cannot sell Greenland because Greenland is under self-rule as a result of a home-rule law which, among other things, states that Greenlanders are their own people. In short, Greenland is not Denmark's to sell. In fact, Greenland is on their way to complete independence from Denmark. It's an absurd thing to even talk about in 2019 because it is not feasible to buy Greenland from Denmark. Do you understand?

On their way to complete independence? What does that even mean? And don't you think Greenlanders would want some protection from the Russians? Or do they have the capability to defend themselves?

Why would Greenland need protection from the Russians? Trump has repeatedly praised the Russians and Putin, and as he said, the US has killers too. Why would they want to be part of the United States? [/s]
In all seriousness, surely you realize that Denmark's military isn't what is keeping the Russians away from Greenland. I'm just going to assume you were joking with that comment.
In terms of being on their way to complete independence... as part of the home-rule law that passed about 10 years ago, Greenland can declare full independence from Denmark if approved by a referendum of Greenlandic people. As of right now, a majority of people in Greenland support independence. They are currently getting a block grant of money from Denmark that ceases with independence. As they develop and diversify their economy, the block grant amount is set to decrease proportionally. As we know, Greenland is rich with natural resources, so as they develop those industries, they are going to be less reliant on Denmark and more likely to vote for independence.
But back to the idea of Denmark selling Greenland. Greenland is not Denmark's to sell, especially as they move towards complete independence. It's an absurd idea and pretty silly that we're talking about this in 2019.

I bet the US could offer much more. Perhaps that was what Trump meant by "buying".
It's an absurd idea and pretty silly that we're talking about this in 2019.
Perhaps but it's not a new idea and it's one the US has pursued in the past. You and the media have made it out that Trump just thought this off the top of his head. I'm not surprised though. That's the treatment he's received from the get-go.

Struggling with sarcasm today, rufus? Didn't see the sarcasm tag at the end there? But if that's the route you're going to take, why did Trump "denigrate" the United States prior to his Presidency?
I bet the US could offer much more. Perhaps that was what Trump meant buy "buying".
I think you may have missed the part where I noted that the people are in favor of independence and are seeking to build their economy and industries in order to attain independence and self sufficiency. They don't want to be part of any country, and I imagine they don't want another country that has no real tangible connection to them "buying" them and then exploiting their land and natural resources.
I mean, you're the Trump whisperer, but if what Trump meant by "buy" is to provide subsidies to Greenland in order to gain control of their land and exploit their natural resources, that's even more absurd. I hope he simply meant that he wanted to buy them from Denmark... it's still stupid, but not as stupid. :facepalm

Yeah, I think what makes it especially absurd is that he's revisiting an idea from 3 generations ago, an era, given world events at the time, where it was more likely that the US could have pulled off a deal like that. In 2019, with Greenland hoping to gain their independence and become self sufficient, it's laughably absurd to want to "buy" them. And no, every report I've seen and read on this has noted that buying Greenland was an old idea from the WWII days and prior. I'm sure some people spouted off about this before they did any research, but one of the great things about this particular bit of foolishness is that it's actually worse when you find out all the details. When you learn that an informal offer was rejected way back after WWII, that Greenland is currently on their way to full independence, that the people want full independence, and that Denmark couldn't sell Greenland even if it wanted to... it's no wonder he receives that kind of treatment by default... he often has no idea what he's talking about, and people have been conditioned to expect that.
Next thing you'll be complaining that people jumped to criticize him and laugh about the fact that he proposed detonating a nuclear weapon in the eye of hurricanes to dispel them. When stuff like this consistently leaks, you become accustomed to not taking him seriously.

The ice caps are melting so they want easier access to the oil in that region. We all know many Republicans including Trump are bought and paid for by oil companies.

Greenland was also significantly more covered by ice caps in the 1940s/all the way up to the 2000s and the North Pole was almost inaccessible except for a few weeks each year. All that is obviously very different now with climate change/global warming. Everyone knows how valuable Greenland is with the ice caps out of the way and North Pole exposed for exploitation.
Canada, Greenland, Norway and Russia are closest to North pole, but everyone knows Canada, Norway and Russia are their own countries. I'm guessing Trump thought Greenland is nothing more than Denmark's territory and the US could buy their way to the North pole through Greenland for our oil companies to "drill baby drill."
These f*ckers are not thinking of tomorrow. They only care about making that money today, and they will drive us into extinction maybe not today or tomorrow but perhaps the day after tomorrow. I'm glad Greenland told Trump 'no'. We should not be drilling or even sending cargo ships through the North pole. The Northwest passage runs directly along the Greenland coastline as well. It's all opening up not just a few weeks a year but almost all year long. Whoever controls Greenland could potentially control access to the North pole and Northwest passage. If US controlled Greenland, it would be a game-changer.

They better go for independence, as this colony stuff is old school. When a bit more of the ice melts, they can sell out natural resources to the highest bidder and a lot of people up there are going to become pretty rich. It's been a very weird week for foolish ideas and unstable rants from Trump. Greenland, nuking hurricanes, holding the next G7 at his properties, his recent rant about Fox News and needing to find a new news outlet.
