That would make it too easy right?

What do you imagine hurt the most in the career of some of the greats? Im sure some of you bigtime fans remember moments most wouldnt. Im gonna give you one I bet still bugs Larry Bird even though I bet he wouldnt admit it.

Bird and Doctor J had a pretty insane rivalry as you may or may not know. Not only did they oppose eachother in the GOAT playoff series but every time they played really it was tense.

Both spectacular in very different ways. Each embarrassed the other many times. Never know who comes out on top. They play it often looked like they were trying to out do eachother....

From one game:

Doc might get the best of Bird and throw a few shots and have a couple dunks on them:

Or Bird might light him up 42-6 which is what happened to cause the taunting that led to:

And this last thing happened after that famous brawl which Barkley swears he was trying to break up but he got in trouble for holding Bird as Doc gave him 3 the hard way.

So...

You have battled this guy for 6 years at this point. Taken his best forward crown. Hes beaten you twice in the playoffs(80 and 82) you have beaten em him twice(81 and 85). Hes dunked on you a dozen times you have lit him up a dozen times....you got into among the wildest brawls of the era and once even fought in a preseason game.

This is the relationship status:

So?

Doc is headed out. One of the final times they played eachother(this is april 86...). Celtics have a 14 game win streak. Playing the old hated rival. Up 2 with seconds to go. With the ball. Obviously you get it to Bird for the FTs to seal it.

This is what happened:

Larry Bird...the 90% Ft shooter.....misses BOTH. Barkley wins a jumpball on the other end vs Mchale tipping it out to Doc for the game winning 3. Not even a lucky bank shot. He wet that bitch with all zeros on the clock. If there were an ISH it would have shut down instantly.

The Doc trolls would have had all offseason to shit on the Bird trolls......even as they won the title. That never stopped you. Both Lebron and Kobe had hating topics made as they were actually hoisting the trophy. Doc trolls would have let Birds ass have it. And it would have been funny....but as I said...he won the title a little later anyway so he laughed last.

So.....

What you got for me on the other greats?

Non elimination game worst moments? The moments that probably haunt them in secret and few people bring up anymore. Dirk going crazy on that bike after they blew it vs the Heat in one of those 06 games was pretty hilarious....but I dont know if its his all time non elimination low point.

Just want whatever you have. Im sure im forgetting something.

That game also had a nice little fight with Sedale Threatt and Danny Ainge. That little whiny-face was tough, a former football star and he tackled Tree Rollins to the ground (and got bit by Rollins in the process). But in this one, he shoves Threatt after getting hit from behind, then Sedale lands a little punch and Ainge was a little spaghetti legged. Doug Collins commented

I read several accounts about that game. Bird was furious that his teammates weren't there to get his back while he was getting beaten down. The was being held in position for Dr J to take a swing and the rest of the Celtics were very lackadaisical about stopping it. It bothered him and he showed up to training the next day very unhappy.

A couple did get in there. Not like the celtics were afraid to fight. Mchale, DJ, Parish, and Ainge would all scrap.

It was in Jack McCallum's book. I've honestly never watched footage of it. He says that Bird stormed into practice and wanted to know why they left him imperiled. I'm seeing McHale get in there, but he was very slow. I don't think the Celtics were afraid of fighting but they seemed indifferent. If nothing else, they didnt rush to protect a teammate who had his hands tied and was a sitting duck for J Irving.

He mentioned how Bird was an a-hole (something we all know) and so - in his (author's) opinion, that might have played a role.

Compare that with how the Nuggets jumped to protect Melo in the fight against the Knicks in 2007 or how the Pacers and Pistons had their teammates' backs. This was odd to watch in comparison. They let Irving swing before getting there. If I were him, I'd be peeved, too.

Very easy answer when it comes to Isiah 'Zeke' Thomas.

'The Pass'

Game 5, ECF 1987, Boston Garden. Series tied 2-2. Pistons lead by a point with 5 seconds left. Rodman just made spectacular block on a driving Bird, and it's Detroit's ball out of bounds, side out.

The game is over. But Isiah panicked. 'Mr. Clutch' panicked.

Instead of calling timeout to regroup & draw up a play, or even just throwing the ball towards Boston's basket, Zeke hurriedly took the ball from the official and attempted a quick pass to Laimbeer under his own basket. The rest is history.

I could still cry thinking about it. The Pistons would have gone back to the Silverdome up 3-2, and would likely have gone on to the Finals. As it was, Boston won in 7. Even in Game 7, Detroit was right in it and had a real chance to win until Vinnie Johnson and Adrian Dantley knocked each other out of the game colliding heads while diving for a loose ball. They were that close.

But alas, they'd have to wait a year. And then another year to win it all.
That Pistons team legit should have 3-peated (phantom foul on Kareem) and was almost in a position to 4-peat. Ah, well.
