View Full Version : Does Giannis averaging 11.5ppg in this FIBA tourny expose how he would be in the 90s?

These FIBA rules are similar to the past NBA rules in terms of actually calling violations like travels/carries/offensive fouls. These international squads are also similar to 90s teams in terms of invoking teamplay-oriented-offenses and playing actual defense.

Paints are not wide open for 95% of the game for free uncontested layups like the current NBA. There are actual rim protectors and the rules actually allow for defense to be played. Free throws aren't fraudulently handed out left and right to offending players like Giannis for shoulder checking his way all the way to the rim.

People say stuff like put Giannis in the 90s and he averages 40ppg. This FIBA tournament exposing the reality of the current NBA says otherwise. The current NBA MVP, who looked absolutely unstoppable under the current NBA ruleset, is averaging 11.5PPG in FIBA play. No matter which way you cut it that is just embarrassing.

Largely because there's no defensive 3 seconds in FIBA. The 90's had illegal defense rules though so you could limit help defense.

The NBA changed the rules because players got worse.

The myth of the early 00s "defensive area" is largely false. What happened was that the AAU generation that came into the league late 90s, couldn't hit the side of a barn from midrange.

It only got worse and the NBA had to change the rules to strictly showcase primitive athleticism: running in a straight line real fast.

Not only were 90s players much more skilled, they were also more complex athletes, perfecting the 2-foot jump and having much stronger cores and legs, unlike the chicken leg, break a leg, players of today.

And this is why I keep saying that if the 96 Bulls played the 17 Warriors under real NBA rules, they'd sweep them. And the Bulls weren't even that physical compared to other 90s teams but if refs let Jordan, Pippen, Harper and Rodman get in the Warriors grill without getting called for ticky tack shit, it wouldn't be a contest. NBA rules USED to allow defenses to disrupt the offense out in the perimeter, nowadays, defenses open up like Moses parting the Red Sea lest you get called for a BS foul. :facepalm

I enjoy it for what it is; a clown show. I really don't consider it a serious competition. Never have. We have real sports for that. Take out the fast breaks and dunks and the NBA goes out of business.

Not at all. Mj only averaged 14 and 17 when he played. When he scored 17 a game in the 1984 Olympics that same year he averaged 28 in the NBA. Pretty sure if you look any NBA player there Olympic stats would be lower than there NBA stats.

Maybe it will we'll have to wait and see. Still don't know if it means much though. Mj was very efficient in one Olympics and not so much in the other when he was actually a much better player. Again I don't think any of these fiba and Olympic stats really mean a whole lot.

There is a difference though when you are winning games by fifty points compared to actually losing. I doubt Jordan puts those stats up if his team actually needed him to be "Jordan" to win.
