JALALABAD (Reuters) - A U.S. drone strike intended to hit an Islamic State (IS) hideout in Afghanistan killed at least 30 civilians resting after a day’s labor in the fields, officials said on Thursday.
The attack on Wednesday night also injured 40 people after accidentally targeting farmers and laborers who had just finished collecting pine nuts at mountainous Wazir Tangi in eastern Nangarhar province, three Afghan officials told Reuters.
“The workers had lit a bonfire and were sitting together when a drone targeted them,” tribal elder Malik Rahat Gul told Reuters by telephone from Wazir Tangi.
Afghanistan’s Defense Ministry and a senior U.S official in Kabul confirmed the drone strike, but did not share details of civilian casualties.
“U.S. forces conducted a drone strike against Da’esh (IS) terrorists in Nangarhar,” said Colonel Sonny Leggett, a spokesman for U.S. forces in Afghanistan. “We are aware of allegations of the death of non-combatants and are working with local officials to determine the facts.”
Haidar Khan, who owns the pine nut fields, said about 150 workers were there for harvesting, with some still missing as well as the confirmed dead and injured.
A survivor of the drone strike said about 200 laborers were sleeping in five tents pitched near the farm when the attack happened.
“Some of us managed to escape, some were injured but many were killed,” said Juma Gul, a resident of northeastern Kunar province who had traveled along with laborers to harvest and shell pine nuts this week.
The exact number of IS fighters is difficult to calculate because they frequently switch allegiances, but the U.S. military estimates there are about 2,000.

Just the USA killing more civilians and non combatants in the name of freedom and "intent" to kill Islamic State forces. Mind you, there are ONLY 2,000 of those ****ers in Afghanistan...how can you assume a group of people sitting around a lit bonfire are with IS and not just regular people trying to make a dollar?? This will inevitably get completely swept under the rug yet again and no one will bat an eye. It's ONLY TERRORISM when it happens to a non-Muslim country. But you can kill all the civilians you want in places like Afghanistan and get away with it.
Disgusting.

Is this the message you'd send to the families of these people who have to live the rest of their lives knowing their father/uncle/son/daughter were killed due to "bad intel"?

Bingo. Thank you, Lambruh. Only thing is idek if you can consider them terrorists after their loved ones get killed for no reason. To them, the US military is the terrorist...is it not?
This isn't just 30 people dead and 40 injured. Each and every one of those people have family and friends who are directly effected by this. How can we blame them for hating us?

Good thing this never happened under the Obama administration. Oh wait, it did, like thousands of times.
FYI the Taliban kill civilians all the time. Just yesterday they exploded a truck outside a hospital and killed dozens of women and children. When this happens the Taliban says it's the victim's fault for getting too close.
200 laborers were sleeping in five tents
WTF? Were they stacked like firewood?

yep. makes their pitch to the public infinitely easier.
who would really blame the survivors of this, or afghanis in general, for becoming at the very least indifferent towards isil/al qaeda/the taliban? :confusedshrug:
and this is just one of many similar incidents, in several countries.

So if the Taliban do it, then it's fine if we do it. Is that seriously your rational?

Good thing the recent peace talks fell apart....phew! That was close. Got to keep those troops in there to support the upcoming war in Iran. That was the plan all along anyway....It has just taken a bit longer than anticipated....Hence the endless "war" in Afghanistan.

This sort of thing is terrible and reprehensible. I understand our reliance on drones... it keeps our troops safe, it's relatively effective, and we can act quickly and decisively when threats are found and identified. However, we need to take a step back and acknowledge that were are consistently killing civilians and innocents. There needs to be far more public oversight and accountability. In this instance, if the reports hold up and these were indeed innocents, who loses their job? Who is tried and jailed? We're not talking civilians mixed with terrorists. We're talking just civilians.

America isn't the enemy to Afghans. It's the terrorist cells and it's the Taliban. If Afghanistan had a legitimate government and weren't overrun by terrorists, then we would not be getting involved. So the only one the Afghans have to blame is themselves. Hard truths my man.

Patrick...you don't even believe that.
Look at the POV of the family and friends of the 30 people that died and 40 that got injured, the Taliban didn't send out this drone to harm their loved ones. Who do they hold this against?

Don't believe what? That the Taliban is the true enemy to Afghans? That's irrefutable. So what part of what I said is untrue and I shouldn't believe?
Yes, what happened was tragic. No one is denying this. But I'm not going to burn the world down because of it, when everyone knows full well that the bigger threat to Afghanistan is the terrorists that run that country and that recruit with or without American drones dropping a bomb on the wrong target.

The question these people should be asking is why has the US been dropping bombs from drones in the first place. Not who dropped this bomb on us this time around.
You're making Afghans out to be simple goat-herders incapable of seeing the big picture of why other countries intervene in the first place. If the United States isn't dropping bombs on terrorists, then who will?

They've come a long way with the accuracy of the drones they use but they still have to be more careful. 30 people is way too high it's not like they accidentally killed a family member of a known militant. We would never hear the end of it if the roles were reversed deservedly so, an afghan killing 30 innocent Americans.
I'm not gonna lie these drones do a lot of good for example U.S. drones take out al-shabaab militants which is good because those morons are an obstacle for the hardworking Somalis who are busting their ass to develop the country's infrastructure.
Let's not deceive ourselves though the powers that be in the U.S. don't do a single thing that doesn't benefit them but hey that's fair and I'm with that - you scratch my back I scratch yours.

Beyond all the BS, any decent person feels bad for casualties of war.
I feel terrible for the decent Muslims just trying to live their lives.
I hate this world and that's part of the reason I believe in the Bible; the world will be completely destroyed one day due to sinful barbaric humans.
God is good and I believe a better place awaits us.

That's very decent of you. I know in my soul that everything will be alright, that there's a purpose to life that we just can't grasp and that includes all of the tragedies.
That's why I'm big on decency and don't care at all about being "good" or being a good person because that's in the eye of the beholder and in today's world that term is politicized nonsense. Look at the clown trudeau and what he's going through and it's just more proof you can't please everyone.

Unfortunately, as Pat said, these things happen. It's the accepted consequences of fighting terrorists, sometimes innocent people gets killed. But we accept that as the necessary cost.
no. but when you "uncuff" the military, civilian casualty goes up. Dont you remember retard trump saying this and you morons cheering him? theres a reason why obama was diligent with airstrikes, hes also diligent with other aspects of society implementing proper regulation, the same regulations trump dismantled with gross negligence and its going to have negative consequences. so go ahead and take the L, trumptards are responsible for these excessive and unnecessary civilian casualties, and dont mark it up to "oh its just the consequences of war, mistakes happen", no, these arent just mistakes, they are a direct result in the high number of airstrikes allowed by trumps "unchained" military. its directly your faults for voting and supporting a moron.
The United Nations mission in Afghanistan reported recently that U.S. airstrikes and Afghan security forces killed more civilians in the first half of 2019 than the Taliban did.
The mission says “pro-government forces” killed 717 civilians while “anti-government forces” killed 531, and 118 deaths could not be attributed.
The Trump administration has also escalated the U.S. war against Shabab militants in Somalia, launching 123 airstrikes since early 2017. That’s four times as many as the Obama administration conducted over eight years.
Instead, most of the increase in civilian casualties has stemmed from a sharp increase in U.S. and allied airstrikes. The Pentagon says its forces in Afghanistan conducted 1,302 airstrikes in the first seven months of this year; that’s more than any full year since 2013.
trumptards have the blood of innocent people on their hands. "oh its whatever, life goes on"

Say stuff like what? That mistakes like this happen in times of war? It happens all the time. Ever heard of Friendly Fire? We've killed our own.
In terms of my statement that life goes on, well.....does it not? These are things beyond our control and how we react to them determines how we live our lives from that point on.
What should our reaction be in this instance? Should we burn cities down? Should we strap a bomb to our chest and walk into a mall as payback? It will be a never-ending cycle of violence and despair. More souls for God to sort out.

You're outmatched here, Little Nate. And you know why? Because you're emotional.
Trump promised us that he wasn't going to get us into any more senseless wars, and so far he has kept to that.
He also promised he'd put an end to ISIS, a group that Obama just absolutely struggled with, and guess what, he's practically put ISIS out of commission for the time being.

Well of course with more frequent airstrikes there will be more innocents killed. It's just an indirect cost nobody wanted. Not only that, there's also more monetary costs, risk of worsening international image, etc. The question is, do we accomplish more or not while paying these costs? If not, then a strategy change might be required. But it doesn't change the fact that fighting any war bear the risk of killing innocents. Risk that we already know and are willing to pay.

The real reason people (not just muslims) are fleeing the middle east is because their home countries have been turned into terrorist infested failed states thanks to the "war on terror".
If you have ever looked at a map, it should be blatantly obvious why Europe is getting all of these refugees/migrants rather than the US. Most of these people would be delighted to come to the US, and if Iraq was in Central America rather than the Middle East those people would be coming here. Do people fleeing violence in El Salvador and Nicaragua go to Europe or the USA?
Anyway, thats funny that you think that "everyone having guns" is going to deter people who are fleeing failed states with daily drone bombings and terrorist groups like ISIS
Also funny that anyone thinks that the US "wont put up with their bullshit and provocative ways and manners" (of muslims). Have you been paying any attention whatsoever during the past decade? The SJWs in this country (who gain more and more influence by the day) would LOVE to put up with the bullshit and provocative ways of hardcore muslims, and they would love to lecture people like you about why you need to put up with it too.

The crux of the thread seems to be that we are making grave mistakes, taking innocent lives in foreign countries, and are quick to dismiss the tragedy of it all. We need more accountability. That's precisely the problem; these mistakes are commonplace, and there is little oversight and accountability. There was little under Bush and Obama, and there is little now. Our American armed forces are consistently taking innocent lives in foreign countries due to mistakes and people dismiss it as "insignificant" because they don't particularly care about those people and they evidently don't value their lives. People don't care unless something happens to someone close to them. If you had someone close to you die in 911, or by some punk ass who got fired and decided to go on a shooting rampage? Folks deal with shit EVERY DAY.
Can't pay all their bills, can't get out of debt, don't enjoy their job, lights get cut off, folks on food stamps and on and on. These folks don't go on shooting rampages.
I just think humans are ****ing spoiled and unappreciative of life in general. Humans, animals, whatever, folks just don't really give a ****. Imagine if you knew in advance today was your last day on Earth. What would you do? What if you knew you had a week? How would talk to people, how would you treat people? Hell, you might listen to your worst enemy, whatever they had to say and you'd be happy to hear it because it would be the last words you would ever here. I think people would just care more about shit and actually do what you can to change the situation, especially if you have the means.
I feel like you're we're put here two reasons. To enjoy life and to help others when you can.
People just don't really care that much. I think care more about being "right" about some shit than the shit they're actually debating about.
