I have plenty of issues with the arms sales to the Saudis during the Bush and Obama administrations, though I understand the situation on the ground: if they don't get the weapons from us, they'll get them from the Russians or elsewhere. I certainly took issue with the prospect of arms sales after the murder of Jamal Khashoggi. We should have taken the opportunity to leverage that scandal to push the Saudis to implement some reforms and hold them accountable. Instead, the administration went out of its way to pretend that nothing happened. It was an exceedingly weak and cowardly response.

But surely you realize the difference between past arms sales and what is happening now. If not, let me highlight it for you; this isn't simply about arms sales.
