“ making the game tougher than I probably should have," Tatum said last week.

He'd dribble into difficult midrange shots, including fadeaways. Those were shots Kobe Bryant, who worked with Tatum in the summer of 2018, made a living taking -- and making. But the NBA has since evolved into a league hyper-focused on shots at the rim and beyond the arc -- and, last year, Tatum didn't take enough of either.

Among the 96 players who had at least 100 direct isolations last season, according to data from Second Spectrum, Tatum ranked dead last in efficiency, with an average of .70 points per play.

Yet, despite those struggles, Tatum was isolating [I]more than he did as a rookie (going from 2.89 isolations per game to 3.25, per Second Spectrum) and driving to the rim less (6.47 to 5.76).

"Last year was kind of funky in all aspects," Tatum said. "I understand that. I acknowledge that, and I'm just trying to be better this year."

Thanks for proving the budding superstars of today are not even remotely close to the player that Kobe was. What a difference in skill between these SGs of different eras.

No, the point is you cant play iso hero ball today because defenders are far superior. You have to actually move the ball as a team and create high IQ shots.

Sure, against yesterday

Why did you conveniently decide not to bold "and making"?

Kobe was always known for taking "bad" shots...in the essence that most players couldn't hit those kind of shots consistently. The thing is, and here's the kicker you left off....he could. He could hit those shots consistently, and with them being such difficult shots they were difficult to defend.

Mamba out.

Everyone in here is so desperate to tear down Kobe because everyone knows the majority NBA players/coaches/execs will never respect Bran's coward career and that Kobe will always be more respected by people that matter :oldlol:

Kobe haters HAVE to resort to twisting verbal context to fit their deluded reality.

You're an embarrassment to Germans all around the world.

Read carefully.

He said the 44% includes the totality, shots like layups and wide open jumpers.

The “tough shots” he was “so good at making” went in, at best, 1/3 of the time.

Youre right, he was better at those shots than most players. But.. that doesnt mean much. The point is to outscore the other team over the course of a game. Not to earn style points on high degree of difficulty.

Any coach would rather have Ben Wallace taking a layup than Mamba throwing up an impossible prayer and hoping to get a Kobe Assist.

More like Tatum's overated garbage and not a superstar-level player that he was hyped up to be. He's nothing more than a 3&D player. Kobe also worked out with Kawhi last off-season and he dominated the Playoffs. Tatum tried to expand his mid-range/ISO game but he's better off cutting and shooting 3s.

Everyone freaking knew this. Everyone was commenting all freaking year. And, it turns out, it is absolutely true.

Explitive Deleted to you, Kobe!

Maybe, it was worth sacrificing a year though, in order to learn a very good lesson. He got it out of his system at least. And I hope JB has been taking notes.

Glad he had some exposure to Pops this summer....Look out!

Sure, against yesterday’s milkmen and insurance agents with t-rex wingspans you could pull off crazy twisting fadeaways in traffic at a 44% clip... but this era is a different story. Now EVERYONE on the court can play. So you have to use your head.

Look how dumb you are - dumber than Rachel Nichols about basketball:

Real Men Wear Green

The Celtics just wanted to change his shot selection. There's nothing wrong with learning from Bryant and trying to add from his skillset. Tatum will need the ability to play hero ball occasionally. The problem is that he was making contested twos the focus of his game when that kind of thing should be reserved for bailing out bad possessions.
