I can appreciate him writing a strongly worded letter.
But more seriously, I could swear remembering when I was in 9th grade being taught not to use exclamation points when writing a paper. Maybe that doesn't apply to letters between presidents but that stuck me as off.

[QUOTE]Democratic leaders in Congress on Wednesday angrily walked out of a White House meeting with President Donald Trump after he had a "meltdown," according to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
"What we witnessed on the part of the president was a meltdown. Sad to say," Pelosi told reporters outside the White House with House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.
The President started the meeting with a lengthy bombastic monologue, according to a senior Democratic aide. He bragged about the "nasty" letter he sent to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan over the Turkish leader's decision to invade northern Syria, the aide said.
The meeting quickly devolved into a series of contentious exchanges centering on the president's decision earlier this month to pull troops from Syria, which paved the way for the Turkish invasion. The [B]White House called the meeting to discuss the president

Your recollection is not off. We were basically not allowed to use an exclamation point under almost any circumstance save for quoting something that itself ended with an exclamation point. All of my English teachers would have likely circled the exclamation point and would have written "Why???" in red next to it.

Got straight to the point. :confusedshrug:
Do you need finesse to be told I could put a knife to your neck? To shroud it in mountains of metaphors? Sure Obama, Clinton and all the previous schmucks would do so, but the message is the same. Do as told or this will happen....
Tbh, it could be worse, like Truman dropping the bomb, Bushy and clan lying knowingly to start a war in Iraq that led in one way or another to a million deaths... Korea bombed to smithereens. Deathtoll in that one? millions... Vietnam burned to an orange crisp... toll? a million. Libya turned into a modern slave market. Millions displaced. The fake war on terror (make terror, support terror, and be the "solution" to terror). The list of endless crimes is truly endless. But we've had fine gentleman in the office, to guide us through the ugly truth....with fine words that put the masses to sleep in a shameless public relations game.
Obviously as long as we stay on top, like the Romans, the Spanish, the Brits that came before, as long as we stay on the pinnacle looking down, the history books will look kindly to us for our time. Another century on the books? two centuries? Now that may be a different story altogether. How would the history books look upon Pax America when the power to create lies, and enforce their existence is no longer there? Just another ugly empire soaked in blood in the history books of humanity.
I understand why Trump bothers many - his brutishness is not the sweet lie. He's like a mobster without filter, in a position that require mobsters with lawyer vocab. When the inner workings get to be expressed in such ways it causes repulsion - for everyone prefers to think of the land as the city on a shining hill.

I dunno; I like letter. Potency of language. The last paragraph is weak and unnecessary, but he makes up for it by saying "I'll call you later."
Despite all of the propaganda, even beyond the economy, I think I am most pleasantly surprised with Trump's ability to deal with other countries(foreign relations.) So he talks like he talks, ok, but he has gotten some good results.
It might be a mistake to pull troops out, sure, but if he can somehow control the situation from afar, that would be a win/win. Even if that looks unlikely, we'll just have to wait n see.

Not sure if serious.
He can't control anything that he doesn't understand, he can't control anything because he's simply following orders.
The Dotard stated that he didn't care about terrorists thousands of miles away. He had to be reminded by Pelosi that those same terrorists thousands of miles away killed 3 thousand Americans in 9/11.
And that's part of the issue.
He's impulsive. He doesn't think. He didn't consult with any officials or members, he simply took a call from Turkey's president and then acted.

We're going to need to change the cover of "The Art of the Deal" to a picture of Mike Pence. Erdogan threw away Trump's letter, ignored his call with Trump and immediately launched his campaign into Syria. Mike Pence met with Erdogan for only a few hours and closed the deal. It is a bad deal... one designed to temporarily save face and give Turkey everything they want... but it's technically a deal.

No dotard, a ceasefire is a bilateral agreement between two fighting parties. Are we fighting the Turks? I don't see the Kurds anywhere near this negotiation. This was a pause in activities unilaterally on Turkey's end.
I suggest you log off for a few hours. Your stupidity is showing again.
A ceasefire (or truce), also spelled cease fire, is a temporary stoppage of a war in which each side agrees with the other to suspend aggressive actions. Ceasefires may be declared as part of a formal treaty, but they have also been called as part of an informal understanding between opposing forces.

Ok, I'm not the only one who was a little incredulous with that post.

Facepalm put you in your place, but I'll hit you again...
A ceasefire (or truce), also spelled cease fire, is a temporary stoppage of a war in which each side agrees with the other to suspend aggressive actions. Ceasefires may be declared as part of a formal treaty, but they have also been called as part of an informal understanding between opposing forces.
Given that the Kurds weren't involved in negotiations, it wasn't a cease fire.
The Turks, shortly after Pence announce the deal, specifically said that there was no cease fire, but rather a pause to allow the Kurds to vacate the territory they were invading.

And then he immediately invaded Syria, started killing Kurds and taking land. I don't think that was the intent of Trump's letter.
I dunno man. Like I said I am fascinated by Trump as president. His letter was very demeaning, almost as if he wrote it to his side chick. That's why I laughed at the punctuated 'I'll call you later."
Trump is good at talking shit, making serious threats, all while pretending like he's playing good cop. There are words and there are meanings/undertones. I dunno if a non-native English speakers, or even some of the English speakers on this forum really have an understanding of what Trump does with words. I dunno if it's GOOD that he does it. I dunno if it leads to positive outcomes, like you said (at least in the short term, like he could probably stop pissing people off, but that's his thing), but to say his communications are bad is wrong.
Like I said, I think the two sentences about history and devil are bleh. I like don't be a tough guy, don't be a fool. And I really like I'll call you later. Those words establish dude as Trump's bitch, whether or not he is or whether or not he's gonna rage out and try to prove he's not. The implication is clear as day, probably even to the people who don't speak English well.
A formal letter could not have contained those sentiments. It could have said similar things, but it wouldn't have had the tone, which, imo was the potent part.

I guess much of it is up to the interpretation of outcomes, right. Someone who is known to bluff a lot and issue threats that they are unlikely to backup isn't generally considered potent, and the things they say aren't treated as potent either. A followup with real power and action is generally required for that person to be taken seriously.
I think when you look at the Turkey situation, they practically ignored his threats and went right ahead with what they wanted to do. We subsequently approached them with our tail between our legs to get a deal done, but they ended up getting everything they wanted out of the deal with the US not benefiting much at all. Turkey didn't suffer any sanctions or economic harm and their military hasn't paid a price, and they won't in the future.
It's like a cousin who does a lot of talking. You can big up your cousin all you want. Tell your friends how he checks fools... how he has the best words. Eventually your friends are going to ask whether he carries. Whether he fights. Whether he actually backs up his words. If you can't point to action, only trash talk... they're going to look at you funny. We've seen enough of Trump to know that the trash talk is rarely backed up when he is dealing with others in power. Is it really potent if he isn't exerting any real power, or are we just dealing with twitter fingers? Right now Turkey is the one taking territory and we're withdrawing our troops. Seems that they have the trigger fingers.

There was NO ceasefire.
Turkey immediately continued to attack by land and air. They started to spray white phosphorus killing both women, children and medical assistance (civilians).
Turkey got everything they wanted and made the US look stupid (yet again).

I dono man. Trump talks an absurd amount of shit. So much that it's impossible to back it all up. He also is apparently cool with talking shit then completely forgetting it and being friendly.
It'd be more like your cousin who talks shit, says he's gonna go in on people, but usually gets over it. However he did shoot someone once and bit a few ears off in his life time.
You really don't think they're gonna do anything if turkey does any more? We pulled out our troops so that's off the table unless shit gets super real, we really have no bargaining chip, but I absolutely believe he'll blast them w sanctions like he's done every one else, then just wait. Which might not be a favorite strategy of people looking for action but it seems to have affected larger countries.
Trumps threats are more like putting your arm around someone like I don't want anything bad to happen man so why don't we just do it my way. Like I said Trump is fascinating. I didn't know it would all be like this. I figured it would be a bumpy ride, but like Kblaze said about hearing shit and being like it's not true... I knew it was true but in the beginning you're like wow did he make a mistake, is this gonna really **** us over, and imo every time it didn't really matter. Could be because the people making the real decisions are different, but the point stands. It's easy to get on that the world is ending after a tweet (or letter), but it's fascinating what his words do to people. Some of it is media propaganda but there are a lot of undertones. He says shit in a cryptic way, like it's calling to mind a memory that both people share (or know what he is alluding to) but he doesn't go anywhere near saying it. He says a lot of crazy straightforward shit too.
As we can only say after trumps actions :we'll see what happens.

We'll see, but don't forget we removed our troops. We let this happen, for whatever reason. The question is how serious it will become. As soon as we withdrew troops and said it's not our problem, they did what they did. We might have even known they were gonna do that. It's hard to know everything, either way, that was our choice. Now, our options are to minimize the damage and keep it from escalating. Which, hopefully, we can. Cuz if it escalates past a certain point, we'll be forced to go back and it'll be a ridiculously stupid move in hindsight.
But when you leave a place of course someone else is gonna come in. That's why they station troops there. That's why people were mad when they withdrew. So, some of this is just as planned. Was it unfair to Kurds, dunno. WHAT IS HONOR? But yea... I would put this into 'intriguing' territory atm. It's not yet shitshow. Time will tell. It's imo not good to watch these things unfold and react to them in real time because it takes awhile to figure out what's actually happening and why, if they ever really do.

Apparently Turkey is back to shooting, launching mortars and grenades. Yesterday, after Pence said that a cease fire had been reached, Turkey basically came out and said that was fake news and that they had only paused their campaign. That pause hasn't lasted long. I don't expect Trump to do anything.
If Trump is that cousin you described, lately he has been getting punked by everyone he talks trash to. Weirdly, when he says let's do thing my way, it generally ends up the way those he is trying to manipulate or control are aiming for instead. Saudi Arabia, Russia, Turkey... They don't seem to take him or his trash talking seriously. :confusedshrug:
Why do you think Turkey went ahead with the campaign into Syria when Trump told them not to and threatened them publicly, in the letter, and supposedly over the phone? Gotta wonder why the trash talk fell on deaf ears.

I was with you til the Putin part. The point is, we did this... for whatever reason. We knew what was gonna happen, and it happened, so why are you upset? That's what I'm talking about.
for whatever reason it's like we effectively moved troops away and to Saudi Arabia. I say 'for whatever reason' because it's not hard to guess the reason. My point is that we made a choice, you can lament the choice, but being like LOOK IT'S GOING DOWN, when they probably knew as soon as they did it that shit was gonna escalate, doesn't mean anything. And continuing to rile yourself up over the more shit that happens doesn't, either. There is likely a limit where, if they reach it, action will be taken. If it doesn't go there, then it will just be political shit and sanctions. Just like every other time.
LIVES ARE AT STAKE. Yea unfortunately, that's how shit is. People in the military have it tough in this day and age. Everyone uses each other. There's no clear enemy or ally. That's just the way it is (song.)
Edit:
Because, up to a point this was known and probably even agreed upon before it happened. Tough shit for Kurds, sure. We'll see what happens if shit gets real. Basically removing troops is like ceding land though.
