I ask because teams seem to more often than not make extremely bad decisions.
Giving Andrew Wiggins a max.
Knicks first letting go of THJ, then trading for him, then extending to a horrible contract.
And on and on..
I honestly think the NBA is a lot less professional than people think it is and mostly it's because the owners are usually grandfathered into it by shady money or inherited money. Just a bunch of moron scamsters who want to appear cool and legit by owning a sports team. Like that idiot russian-jew in Brooklyn or Donald Sterling or whatever. A bunch of shady pricks with no idea about the sport.

For one thing: Yes I think youre correct that a lot of these owners made their money completely unrelated to sports, and they dont know the first thing about hiring a sports-competent management.
The other thing, tho, is that they also depend on their fan bases for revenue, and collectively, fans are EXTREMELY stupid. If the Wolves let Wiggins walk, and he performs even remotely well for another team and the Wolves struggle, the fans arent going to take logic and circumstance and happenstance into account and make a reasonable assessment of the decision. Theyll call the owner cheap and stop showing up for games. Plus, Im sure owners look at things like “How many jerseys does Wiggins sell?” when they make these decisions.
Definitely owners arent very sports savvy, and then you combine that with having to appease fan bases full of capricious plebs... you get a league that is generally run with laughable degrees of competence.

Robert Sarver (suns owner) is a smart business man but a complete idiot when it comes to sports. A lot of ramblings that he would run the front office and their decisions as if it were a business of his. It resulted in 19 win seasons with some of the worst basketball in the history of the franchise.
Guess what happened when he took a step back and allowed James Jones to make basketball moves? We are seeing a competitive basketball team for the first time in a decade. Still a work in progress and not likely to make the playoffs, BUT, we are competitive. And seeing as how we won 19 games last season, plus being in a stacked conference...competitive is what we can reasonably hope for.
As to why we didn't draft Luka (the clear best player of the draft), well...Robert Sarver in his infinite wisdom wanted Ayton bc he played for his alma matter (UofA)....:facepalm

It's like any organization or business that are run by humans. There's some good and bad ones.

That's been the issue with a lot of franchises. Great owners hire the right people to make those decisions for them. You look at all the great franchises who sustained a high level of play for a long stretch, they hired the right people and trusted them to put the right teams together, whether it's the Spurs or the Warriors or the Lakers.
Lakers were so good under Dr.Buss because he trusted Jerry West and later Mitch to make the basketball decisions. He passes away and his idiot son ruins everything within a few years by forcing Mitch into signing terrible contracts (Deng, Mozgov), Jeannie takes over and trusts Pelinka/Magic to do their job and we got a competitive roster again.

The NBA is run by people who do not watch nor know a thing about basketball but rather rely on boxscore stats to make a basketball judgement. They are similar to Bran stans in a way in that they know nothing about basketball and are unable to form a basketball opinion without stats and analytics.
This is why you see so many terrible contracts being handed out. Statnerds stay losing.

Rober Sarver also placed a real life goat (an actual animal species) in his GM's office before the draft, the intended message was to draft a GOAT.
the animal ended up shitting inside the GM's office.

if the NBA was run by LeGMs then the league would be in much better hands.
look at james jones - a certified LeGM - and what he's done to turn around the suns.
then you have the clippers with ty lue, another certified LeGM. that team wasn't doing shit without him and now they are the number one contender in the NBA after adding ty lue, one of lebron's guys in the summer.

Yes there are a lot of incompetent people in GM positions. Also owners that are successful in other businesses frequently don't realize they have no clue about basketball. Their ego won't allow it.

No, overall it's not.
Te biggest problem is that you can't buy your team into contention. Once in a while there's a talent in the draft that changes the course of a franchise, but you have to luck into getting that exact player. A Shaq, Duncan, Lebron type.
You can't use a strategy to draft that player if you don't know if a great talent will be around in 3 or 4 years.
Let's say Cleveland drafts Anthony, Denver Lebron. Denver most likely gets a chip or two out of that. Does it make them more competent than they were? Is George Karl suddenly a GOAT tier coach?
The Suns make one of those finals and win them. Are they a great franchise now? Durant doesn't get hurt and GS steamrolls the Raptors? Are they a junk franchise, although the team make up was still the same?
Is Cuban a better owner, because of 2011 or a bad one due to the following off season?
Aside from not being able to buy yourself into contention it's also a problem that you can't pay another team to buy their player. Not talking about buyouts, but transfer fees from owner to owner. Let's say the Lakers want a third star who's under contract elsewhere.
Imagine Welts' phone rings and Jeanie tells him she'd buy Curry for 300 million dollars. Would he say no?
Only real incompetent move in recent years was keeping Perkins over Harden. That's were a team had a choice and the outcome was obvious before everything went down. That killed OKC in the long run.

OP is right, most NBA owners are wealthy businessmen who are not content to make billions quietly, they also want to become famous celebrities (Mark Cuban, Dan Gilbert, etc.).
The NBA would assuredly lose money every year if it weren't heavily subsidized by taxpayers.
Im so nba'd out
