The NBA says the Clippers' decision to sit Kawhi Leonard for management of an injury was consistent with league rules...

BUT, they have fined the Clippers $50,000 for statements, including by head coach Doc Rivers, that were inconsistent with Leonard's health status.

And......

What were those statements?

“We saw what happened last year with Lebron,” Rivers told reporters this morning after a Clippers team shoot around. “Even though K has a much smaller groin region in general and much more help than Lebron did last year, we’re not inclined to take any chances. We want him fresh.”

That's actually really shitty of the league to do that.

Doc was being very real and honest when asked about the load management. Basically admitting that the "injury" is a bunch of bs and it's just their gameplan to be productive going forward. He said that he gets that people are upset by this and it sucks for the fans and nothing he could say would make it right.

I guess the league wanted him to lie and say Kawhi is hurt and needs this time off...

Why don't they be more specific? Was it because he said it was load management instead of just saying his knee is messed up?

The NBA really looks for any little stupid things to take team money.

Agreed. I'm not okay with the league penalizing those who are simply trying to be truthful. This may be harmless enough on the topic of load management but if you read between the lines what else is the league trying to hide from the public if they're so keen to fine people for disclosing a few details? Recipe for corruption.

The team doesn't want it out there he's got a chronic injury. Makes him look weak and vulnerable to competitors, also hurts his market value. If you're a competitor and you know that all it takes to knock out the best player in the league is getting rough with his leg a bit you'd do it wouldn't you?

Meanwhile, truth is he's got a chronic injury so they're going to rest him to squeeze as many playoff games outta Kawhi they can before he breaks.

He's already a proven winner. The Clips have the most talented team in the league. It's about as a guaranteed a chip you can get in the NBA for them this year.

The biggest variable is Kawhi's health. The team knows they just have to get him there. Toronto proved that last year.

For one, im not a laker fan.

Two, i couldnt care less about any one team i like watching competitive ball no matter what. Any primetime bout im down to watch.

If your reasoning was sound, and it was just a minor chronic injury thing, they could sit him when the clips were playing the suns or magic or bobcats etc.

But theyre ruining primetime games and making them unwatchable with these shenanigans.

The guy needs to nut up and play making 100s of millions of dollars to toss a ball in a basket, at least show up for the marquee matchups.

it almost does feel like a sleight of hand issue.

dont let opposing teams see your cards before you show them in the playoffs.

basically a form of fraud compared to how it used to be when everybody logged their full 82.

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure there's some of this at play too. That's probably why they got fined. Silver's gotta be pissed about them ruining marquee matchups and how does he sell future back to back tickets featuring Kawhi in them to the fans while explaining the reason for not refunding tickets?

That's not the message he wants the league to be sending.

Not minor though. Like a ticking time bomb with a random timer. Nobody knows when that'll be it so they're not pushing their luck.

Everyone knows Kaloadmanegement has a chronic quad injury. That's the whole reasoning of him sitting out B2B games. But LA said it was a knee injury for last night while Doc said he was 100% healthy later during an interview.

how can you even have a degenerative quad issue?

thats a muscle... muscles heal. Joints are a different story once the cartilage is gone its a persistent downhill, but muscles have blood flow and are capable of regeneration. Cartilage isnt.

Tendon attaches muscle to bone and receives poor blood supply. Thus, the quad issue.

Clippers don't care about his market value. They're in it for the long haul with Kawhi. They can't hide a career ending injury and then just trade him to some team. That won't work.

If he really is hurt then that's fine for them to rest him.

Yes, kind of a weird situation though. It's why he signed a 2 year deal. You can be sure Kawhi's team wanted more than that. That's all the Clippers would do though.

If the Clippers decide out of necessity to move on because load management increases, it pigeonholes them and screws Kawhi. He's still gonna try and get a deal elsewhere.

All that being said, anybody/any exec that watched the finals last year and is watching him play this year realizes he's still hurt so it's like the league's worst secret.

This is partly why he bounced from the Spurs. When they hesitated to offer a supermax deal (because of the injury) he forced a trade. Toronto was wise and bit on it. He left to play in his preferred location with a whole lot of stipulations in his contract, but only at two years guaranteed.

There have been all kinds of rumors about special accommodations for Kawhi, you can bet load management and the franchise taking the heat for that is part of the deal.

Pretty sure I remember many of you buying the media stating that the Spurs misdiagnosed Kawhi and were trying to force him to play too, but nevermind all that.

Nevermind that Pop created load management for Duncan and gave him DNP's: old, while resting Manu/Parker as frequently as they needed to the point the NBA was fining the franchise for doing it. They obviously hated their new franchise player that gave them a fresh ring.
