View Full Version : The Forgotten

ClutchCityReturns

The purpose of this thread is to pay homage to the guys from past eras that are all but forgotten, despite being damn good players during their time. These are the guys that today's casual NBA fans couldn't pick out of lineup, but would be stars if they were putting up their numbers in today's league.

My pick: Detlef Schrempf

http://www.sportal.de/basketball/personal/interviews/images/schrempf_04.gif

His two seasons that stand out most to me are his 19ppg 10rpg 6apg 1spg season he had in 92-93, and his 19ppg 6rpg 4apg 1spg season in 94-95 in which he shot .523 from the field and a blazing .514 from 3.

http://www.nba.com/playerfile/detlef_schrempf/

There's no doubt in my mind that he'd be making max or near max money these days, yet he's never mentioned by anyone anywhere. He deserves better.

Schrempf was awesome. I loved how he'd take set open threes. If Schrempf was open from deep, he wouldn't jump, just drain the shot.

Reminds me of Sam Perkins. Always looked like some washed up 45 year old guy playing a pickup game at the local park when he launched his 3's.

Mitch Richmond.

Was the only reason the Kings were worth mentioning for a while. Mantained the franchise for 7 seasons being the leading scorer in each of them averaging 21.9ppg. Hail the rock.

Still gets his head on TV every now and then as an assistant coach for the Pacers and looks like he has been dining out with Kobeyashi The Hot Dog Guy since he retired.

Blasphemy!!!

Respect to the Smooth, the guy was the last player to be better than Jordan and on the same team (albeit preseason during Jordan's freshman year)

************Warning to Jordan Fans**************

Please do not attack this, MJ was better very quickly but there was a brief time where Sam was the man and they were on the same team...that's all I am saying nothing else...disclaimer...Jordan is better...duh...don't hate.

********Now back to my post************

Sam made a career out of post defense and dragging the opponents center out of the middle with his range...all the while doing it stoned and horribly out of shape and past his prime.

Sam Perkins is a flat out bad boy who got the most out of his skill set towards the end of his career (when he looked like 'the fat 45 year old in the park') despite not fullfilling his promise coming out of college when he was taken very high by Dallas.

Lever's averages in the four year period from 86-87 through 89-90: 18.9 ppg, 8.9 rpg, 7.5 apg, 2.5 spg. That's some sick rebounding from a point guard (especially one not named Magic Johnson)!

haha, my only memory of Clarence Weatherspoon was in one of those Heat-Knicks battles (forget what year). Somebody who was pretty good (i think it was jamal mashburn) caught the ball at the top, and dribbled a bit. Then with five seconds let, he passed it to Spoon for some reason. Weatherspoon then spotted up for a long jumper that was way out of his range, and it wasn't even close. :roll:
My friend and i were just roaring, that of all guys to take what might be the Heat's final shot of the year, it's Clarence freakin' Weatherspoon. :roll:

Ced was a machine, he barely needed the ball to score, a real effiecient guy. Always looked like he was having fun, and was everyone's friend on the court. I'd forever be watching Laker games and see that Ceballos all of a sudden has 20 points. It's a shame he was injured the year he was selected to be an allstar.

Bill Cartwright. People often forget that Bill was a 20ppg scorer i nNew york before he was traded for Charles Oakley.

How about Kevin Duckworth (R.I.P.)

He gets nothing but made fun of, despite being a MIP winner, an all-star, and making two finals appearances.

Chuck freekin' Person. Put up 18 and change for the Pacers before he bounced around a bit. Has there ever been a better tandem of long-range bombers than him and Reggie?

Still gets his head on TV every now and then as an assistant coach for the Pacers and looks like he has been dining out with Kobeyashi The Hot Dog Guy since he retired.

*Raises can of Coke.*

To Chuck!

I loved the way he shot the ball... always tried to imitate it but failed

Anybody remember what a great shot Jeff Malone had? All in between pull up game. He and Eddie Johnson are both that type of offensive player, that just doesn't seem to exist anymore.

i was watching an old utah-blazer playoff game the other day and jeff malone hit a couple of shots and i thought to myself-- i had forgotten all about him. he was quite a shooter

eddie johnson too. remember that one year when he hit those two free throws at the end of the all star game to send it into OT?

here is my addition to forgotten players:

Previously KJ ruined it in 93 :rolleyes: and 94. He never understood his role as a second punch. He wa thee PG of the Team but he acted as if he was thee SG of the Tea. He wanted to be JORDAN-Like :rolleyes:

Anyhow there was this players i think whose last name was Williams he used to where his socks up like the 80s oldschool style. NATURALLY TALENTED to be a Star but nothing much happened. Anyone remember him? I think he played for Dallas.:confusedshrug:

Do you mean Walt "The Wizard" Williams?

Fred "Downtown Freddie" Brown (born August 7, 1948 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin) is a former professional basketball player. A 6'3" guard from the University of Iowa, he played 13 seasons (1971–1984) in the NBA, all with the Seattle SuperSonics. Known for his accurate outside shooting, Brown was selected to the 1976 NBA All-Star Game and scored 14,018 points in his career.

Brown finished his senior year at the University of Iowa in 1971, averaging 27.6 points per game[1], and was selected by the Kentucky Colonels in the American Basketball Association draft and selected 6th overall by the Seattle SuperSonics in the 1971 NBA Draft. His NBA career got off to a slow start, as he averaged only 4.2 points per game in 33 games as a rookie, playing behind veteran guards Lenny Wilkens and Dick Snyder. Following Wilkens' trade to the Cleveland Cavaliers in 1972, Brown saw more playing time and his scoring average rose to 13.5 and 16.5 points per game in the next two seasons.

After Snyder was traded to the Cavaliers in 1974, Brown's output increased again, to 21.0 points per game in the 1974-75 season and he finished fifth in the league in steals per game. In the 1975-76 season, Brown had an All-Star season finishing fifth in the NBA in both scoring average and free throw percentage.

Brown was captain of the SuperSonics' 1978-79 NBA championship team. Often among the league leaders in free-throw percentage, Brown also led the NBA in three-point shooting percentage in the 1979-80 season—the first season in which the three-point line was adopted by the league.

When he retired in 1984 Brown was the SuperSonics' all-time leader in:

Games played (963)
Points scored (14,018)
Field goals (6,006)
Free throws (1,896)
Brown still holds the team's all-time marks for points in a regular season game with 58, points in a playoff game with 45 (a record shared with Ray Allen), and steals in a game with 10 (a record shared with Gus Williams).

Alvin Robertson, only swingman to ever put up a quadruple-double, and only one to do it with steals

Thats sick!

~~~
Michael Cooper. Seriously. Never hear about cooper.
Coop was such a fantastic defender and did so many things that just are not that glamorous in this highlight era. Ran the floor well. Had range.
Probably easy to get overlooked on a squad with Magic. He was really freeking good!
