Basically players play hot potato with the ball as time expires to not get credited with a turnover for shotclock violation.

the irony is that shotclock violations are actually team turnovers so they didnt need to resort to this to begin with

but this just underscores the stat whore mentality of modern players. We never see halfcourt heaves anymore, guys would rather protect their FG%

Can you blame them though? Teams invest in analytics and everyone's evaluated by advanced metrics that some white MIT nerds came up with rather than by what they can actually do on the court.

A lot of these players have percentage based bonuses listed in their contracts. They're doing it to put money in their pockets.

It's only "exposing" if you've been living under a rock. Stats are a big part of contract negotiation nowadays. Of course players want nice stats.

Everytime I come into a thread exposing BETA, weak, and shameless behavior from the weak crop that is the current NBA there is always at least one poster, usually several with the weak ass beta one liner: "Can you blame them?"

We're talking about millions of dollars here. Players have always tried to fill up the stat sheet, now we're in a different era of analytics so obviously guys don't want that turnover on their record, even though they wouldn't have received one on the play in the OP but it's a normal thing for guys to pass out of a last-second shot because they don't want to lower their FG%.
