Let's be honest. The defense in the 80s and 60s wasn't any better.
A defensive player like K.C. Jones, Bill Russell, Gus Johnson or a Mark Eaton, Bobby Jones or young MJ, or any of the late 80's Pistons used to defensively attack offensive players and their methods have been all but outlawed in this era. Today's players can match their intensity but it's all but useless against a confident shooter alotted late gather for extra steps or cutters and ball handlers barred from being touched.

You could argue defense wasn't as consistently played in those eras and that's possible but still would be tough to argue at this juncture of the leagues defensive efforts I've seen. It appears this season to be at an all-time low. A few years ago I'd have agreed that players appeared to consistently show more consistent effort since a few years ago a defenders options were almost as limited as now but not quite. They couldn't make mistakes with their feet since hand checking was gone but still could be physical off ball and gather steps weren't so late on offensive players - it seemed like a shot could be bothered. Now it's not the case, now the philosophy on many teams rockets included seems to be pressure defense and staying in front of a man doesn't work so why bother. Most teams just try to be alert about passing lanes for steals these days.

60's and 80's may look lax long stretches of games but a key strategy when defense isn't outlawed is timing. Opt to look lazy and get burned a few possessions to rest during inconsequential volleys then completely rip their assignment or put a lid on the basket in a crucial moment. Shouldn't be mistaken for defense not existing. Of course, you did have the 80's Spurs with a Rockets like mentality of "just score more points". But, this league doesn't even have the OPTION to stop a player. At least those eras there were options, and a few players and teams that tried to use those options.
