I know he gets beat up a lot for being the worst #2 option in Finals history (10 ppg for the series) but he actually isna really good player. His free throw hand-to-face ritual was superb.

Great player. I would have been happy if the Jazz had cut Jeff Malone and somehow they got Hornacek for him! The Jazz instantly reached a level they'd never been at before

Yeah Carmelo did a lot of winning in NY as have the Knicks. Running an outdated system of the GM's. Never had a chance there

I was always in awe in how smart and versatile Jeff Hornaceck was on those Jazz teams, always making the right play while being highly skilled. I remember he always had those patented circus/flip shots that always went in lol. Perfect third option for any contending team.

Have any of you trolls stopped to think that perhaps the Bulls defense was one reason Hornacek shot so badly? You know, Jordan and Pippen's goal was to stop their man on defense in the Finals, not give them the Finals MVP. As your man LeBron has done ... four fuc*in times. :facepalm Hornacek was a fine player, who all of you drag through the mud for your schoolboy agendas.

Also, you all conveniently forget that it was B. Russell who usually played Jordan on defense, and he routinely gave talented offensive players fits.

Huh???

I've been told for years MJ exclusively wins titles basically by himself. Has no help on offensive and the only thing that wins him rings is his offense.

What were James' avg. in the Finals when those alleged 4 players were his direct assignment while winning FMVP?

What did those alleged 4 players avg. each series to get them the nod for FMVP?

That's true but it should be noted MJ fans never apply this analysis (factoring in the quality of the defense) when they want to criticize other players for shooting poorly.

Let's check the record on Hornacek those years to see how much the D affected him.

Hornacek in the regular season in 97', 98': 14.4/3.2/4.4 on 52.0% eFG
Hornacek in the playoffs in 97', 98': 12.7/3.5/3.4 on 46.8% eFG
Hornacek in the finals: 11.4/3.1/2.5 on 43.5% eFG

What about the quality of defenses faced? In 97' Utah faced the 16th, 8th, 10th, 4th best defenses. In 98' it was the 25th, 2nd, 11th, 3rd best defenses. So clearly the defenses were much tougher in the playoffs, especially after the first round. FWIW in that series against the #25 defense he averaged only 11.2, although his efficiency was good at 52.4% eFG. So he clearly got worse as the comp got tougher.

The other possibility is he simply choked on the finals stage. Small samples but we can compare what he did against the #2 defense in the WCSF in 98' to against the Bulls' #3 defense.

Against the Spurs: 12.2/2.8/4.2 on 47.1% eFG
Against the Bulls: 10.7/2.7/2.7 on 43.8% eFG

So he did much worse against a similar caliber defense when it was the finals, implying some level of choking but to be fair we can look at #2 and #3 only so much. The Spurs didn't have Pippen, MJ, Rodman, Harper and defenses will play tougher in the playoffs.

All this said, Hornacek was Utah's #2 scorer. These numbers are unacceptable for a #2 scorer if a team wants to win a chip. In another thread MJ fans are arguing 20 PPG as a #2 scorer sucks. What does that make Hornacek, then? :lol

you all conveniently forget that it was B. Russell who usually played Jordan on defense

Some of that is because of this:

https://dnh0aphdpud22.cloudfront.net/sized/c7e03cb4f76f49-LIB6897071/med_thumbnail.jpg?1588591860

Russell doesn't have his own "documentary" (more like a special given it was about half an hour) on guarding MJ.

I've been told for years MJ exclusively wins titles basically by himself. Has no help on offensive and the only thing that wins him rings is his offense.

Plus, as noted earlier, MJ stans repeatedly say a guy scoring 20 PPG in the same era is a trash scorer so what exactly does that make Hornacek? By MJ fans own logic, Utah was incredibly weak comp to have a second scorer that makes Pippen look like Wilt in comparison.

Stockton sucked even worse scoring wise. 9.7 PPG in the 98' finals. This is the guy MJ fans will sometimes say was the best sidekick of that era. Again, by their own logic that implies the era was weak if 9.7 PPG is what you get in a finals from the best sidekick (it was something like 12 in 97', so not much better).

Hornacek was better than Klay Thompson and was actually an elite level scorer before he came to Utah to be, essentially, a third option as he aged.

People on this board love the dump on the Jazz ... but if they're so bad how'd they handle Shaq's Lakers and Hakeem's Rockets several times?

You can tell the majority of this board has never played any competitive basketball at any reasonably high level period. There's always that one goof off kid at the gym who thinks playing the old unathletic looking guy is going to be easy and then proceeds to get their ass lit up in the game by the old ass guy.

There's more to basketball than athleticism. And even that might be pushing it, I doubt many posters here could even hold their own in a casual pick up game.

Jeff Hornacek was a solid player, if he played for the Bulls instead of the Jazz we'd have threads on how Jordan was supposedly lucky for having Hornacek on his team.
