Most NBA players are literally worn out.

It isn't a job it was a punishing life.
Many have knee's , and can walk , but guys like Nash, Stockton, Cassell -

Guys that are less than 200 pounds are still fit and exercise.
But guys that have heavier weight and height , pretty much are done,

It is brutal on the legs , knees , feet... look at retired NBA players feet , they look horrible in most cases.

I am always amazed to see Kareem - he has lived with fitness in mind, and does yoga.

All depends entirely on the player.

Many players did. There's awesome footage of Earl Monroe running point and still dominating the Baker league in the 1980's against some outstanding mix of young up and coming NBA players and just plain elite college and semi-pro players. So some players go off and do things like that which I'd still consider elite competitive ball. If you count lesser pro leagues thats the same thing as others went (and still) go to finish up in some capacity overseas. Today we have the big 3 league as well where a lot go. One tier down from these guys that play elite status ball is that there are a lot of stories of guys like Cliff Hagan (even film of him doing this) and Pistol Pete just shifting into their local communities church or rec leagues. I think there was footage of Jason Williams tearing it up in a league like this recently though I think he then ramped it back up and went to the big 3 after that if I'm not mistaken.

But then you have guys that after they left the game they never really play again. Russell, Barkley, Kobe, Shaq - I think all these guys walked away and never cared to (or some never could) play again. I think for some like Russell their thought process is they only wanted to play it at their zenith they reached and once they couldn't play at such a high capacity they didn't want to see themselves in some lesser capacity so just moved on in life to conquer new endeavors. For others, there was just such a dramatic decline like Barkley and probably 40+ Shaq since their body type just gained so much weight I don't think they had a choice.
