I think it has to do with the recent trend of stars playing less minutes.

In the past stars would typically play 40+ minutes per game, so their efficiency per minute of play would be lower due to fatigue. But now you have stars in their prime playing only 30-35 minutes a game, which means they can play at peak efficiency the whole time.

To me this is close to it but add players know they are playing less minutes so they are gonna push a bit to get their stats.

Man, it's been like 20-21 games. I wonder what was the stats of MJ after that short of time? Or Wilt. Or Shaq prime. Or whatever started off hot.

Don't get me wrong, it's great for them. They are absolutely killing it. Lets come back later tho.MJ posted some crazy stats in the first 20 games like some other players throughout history.

MJ after like 20 games in 87 was averaging like 39 ppg, 6 rpg, 4, on 48% shooting. gmsc 27.7

In 89 it was like 35 ppg, 8 rpg, 6 apg on 56% shooting gmscr 29.7

Charles Barkley in 88 after the first 20 games, 29 ppg, 13 rpg, 3.5 apg, on 62.3% shooting. gmsc 25.8

Kobe in 06 averaged like 31, 5, 5, on 43% gmsc 18.6 on the first 20 games.

So, just come back later. They may get better or worse. But it's a small sample size of the players who did it in a 82 game season. Curry was averaging like 32 ppg on like 19 or 20 shots or something in 16. LeBron per or Wade's per were higher in 09 until a couple of bad games pulled them down.

We're in the 1960s of efficiency stats in terms of mind blowing and record breaking numbers.

There is some reason behind - Giannis is peaking at the moment, hitting his prime years, the same for Harden, who is still in his prime. Luka we all saw last year that he could be good, and now he play sensational for his age. It is not so different league than the year prior. We have also one year when Lebron, Kobe and Iverson scored all over 30 for a season.
MJ and Wilt played in different eras. MJ played vs tougher pre 3 point era defenses. For Wilt we don't have the blocks and steals, which could put his PER over the top.
