Zone defense is currently illegal in the paint, where defenders are required to abide by defensive 3 guidelines, aka remain within "armslength" (https://medium.com/the-basketball-dictionary/2-9-6fb93080023c) of an offensive player at all times, or vacate the paint entirely - so the requirement of standing next to your man ("armslength") in the paint is the opposite of a zone (bans zone in the paint), and infact is the strictest defense possible other than requiring players to stand shoulder-to-shoulder

The NBA started outlawing physicality since 1994, the first time Michael retired and they shat their collective pants when they saw what the AAU poisoned generations would do to the NBA in the future if they didn't make the rules easier for them.
Here's a nice little clip from 1984 during the preparation for Olympics when the NBA authorized 8 exhibition games between the pros and the Olympic team:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0w8av54PiUA
There were 4 lottery picks on that 84' Olympic team with three cornerstone players in MJ, Ewing and Mullin and the NBA basically said F!CK EM!!! Let them boys earn it!!!
Can you imagine this soft millennial buddy buddy generation playing in a SANCTIONED GAME where there are NO FOUL OUTS and the instructions from the opposing coach is to basically clobber anybody coming down the lane?!?!
Here you see how different the NBA's attitude towards "player protection" was in the 80's and into the early 90's. You had to have solid fundamentals and basketball IQ along with balls of steel to succeed in that era. Sucks for you guys you didn't get to see it.

I like how you just totally glossed over steph but how is this narrative gonna look when the clippers win the chip this year and kawhi has as many chips and fmvps as lebron? Especially given that 2 of those chips are gonna be a direct result of kawhi beating him.
Kawhi Szn 9: 25-8-5 on 43%
LeBron Szn 17: 26-11-7 on 50%

An actual zone defense still isn't allowed in the NBA. The defensive 3 seconds means there is no true zone defense allowed.

It's a fact that there isn't a zone allowed due to the defensive 3 seconds rule. Even a high school level coach could tell you that.
