Why aren't people out here MAKING contenders instead of begging to go to already established contending teams/allstar players? I thought this was the toughest most skilled superhuman superathlete superalien era of all time? Whatsup with all the Charmin? :wtf:

What happened to the days where the best in the world player was repeating and almost threepeating with 18-9 second options? These days people want to run away and create superteams and stack the deck to guarantee success.

Who started this trend of running away? Anyone know?

You did. The media did.

By repeatedly telling players that they're failures and losers as individuals if they don't win team championships in team sports.

Idiot.

Social media did. We did. People who call John Stockton a loser did. The American mentality having become the gold standard worldwide did. (Here is something totally American: Wining is not the most important thing. It's the only thing.) Money totally ruling everything did. We, as a society, don't really value hard work any more. We say we do... but we only care if hard work equals success. Huge success. Kobe was a sidekick for some of his rings. LeBron only won three. KD wasn't able to win. Yeah, but can Curry win without KD? On and on and on. That's what does it.

To me this issue goes way WAY beyond sports. People see everything as a competition. Today, almost universally throughout the world, it's materially better to be poor than it was to be a poor person at any time previously. And yet poor people are no happier today, in large part because things have improved even faster for rich people, to whom the poor people are constantly comparing themselves.

In a way it makes sense to hold the most successful people up as a benchmark, since they're the pioneers who show what's possible, and people should strive to emulate their approach and duplicate their success. But it also makes it vastly more difficult to appreciate all the good things that you do have.

Not that you are looking for an actual answer but....

People were fairly open about wanting to go to contenders the entire history of the nba but there was no unrestricted free agency the first 40 years. It didn
