All the top 10 or so players from today's game with the exception of Harden pass the eye test to the extent that it matters. The question is basically asking what the next generation of young idiots will think about certain players looking backwards after the hype has completely settled and only people in their late 30s or early 40s (or older) actually remember what is what like to watch these player and follow their narratives at the time. There is so much digital info out there now as opposed to the 80s or 90s, that the look-back eye test is going to be less and less important, unless the rules change dramatically again.

The real question when it comes to all time greatness is the positive impact on the sport due to the player's style/impact/winning/popularity/decision-making/whatever. It isn't the ONLY question, but it trumps any other singular criterion. And that we can make some pretty good guesses about.

None of the current crop of players are going to be looked at well in this regard. Steph will/should be looked at this way to some extent and Giannis has a shot to be looked at this way, but almost all the top players in the league today who are already well into their primes or beyond, have such negative baggage associated with them, that no matter how talented/skilled/productive/whatever they end up being, they will just never be considered as great as the players of the past. And this isn't pure nostalgia either. People are DYING to find and anoint the next great one. We just haven't seen one live up the bill even remotely since Shaq and Shaq was somewhat imperfect in this regard as well. Put your hopes in Giannis staying with the Bucks for 90%+ of his career, winning a lot, improving skills, etc., because if he isn't the guy, we are going to be waiting all that much longer.
