False. The scoring average in 1987 was 110 ppg on 89 shots per game. As it happens, those are exactly the same numbers as this year. Boom

it's the best athletes and most skilled players that benefit the most from extra spacing and less physicality

the lack of spacing forced mj to take shots like this on the regular to get those 37 ppg:

mj was a terror on-ball, off-ball, on the post... so he was much tougher to guard and would be unstoppable with today's spacing, hands-off defense, and freedom of movement mandates

previous eras had lower efficiency and defensive rating (better defense)

and they took much more FT's, aka they were taking tougher shots and often had to earn it at the line..

today's FT's aren't even on shots - mostly ticky-tack non-shooting fouls due to hand-check ban and freedom of movement mandates

1986-1987

109.9 PPG
5.5 Blocks
8.6 Steals
24.5 Fouls

2019-2020

110.4 PPG
5.1 Blocks
7.7 Steals
21.1 Fouls

So if MJ played today, he would be in a league with less resistance at the basket and no handchecking.

Past eras nearly match today's ORtg/PPG despite taking mostly mid-range/long 2's
aka the toughest and least efficient shot allocation that today's game fears/avoids

so previous eras basically match today's ortg despite taking far tougher shots and a harder way to play the game that required expertise at tough shots (long 2's) .... :facepalm

that proves they were superior - they were better at that contested mid-range shit that kawhi, Dirk, KD, Kobe, etc win the most with and that there's no answer for

if we gave guys like Bob McAdoo a bunch of teammates and strategy to space the floor and take easier shots than contested 2's everytime, who knows how many points he would've averaged

MJ played for the slowest team in the league in '87. 95.8 pace.

Put him on the Rockets in this NBA and he's averaging 40+ ppg.
