New video on Andrew Toney. This dude was killing it on the Sixers. Took it to the Bird. A forgotten 80's legend?

Stress fractures killed him.

I was in my 20's at the time when he played ...
6er's had a heII of a team , as vid explained.

Toney I admired , he had such a pure stroke / like todays Kyle Korver.

When he took a jumper , you knew it was in.

During his playing days he broke down often, but a heII of a team as I stated.

Danny Ainge said that he's more afraid of Toney than Jordan. Mr. Toney is one of those players that performed well vs Boston.

Barkley has said that Toney was the best player he ever played with.

He was really good when healthy but wasn't healthy much. Constant foot problems. Barkley said he saw Toney crying on the bench one day because he was so frustrated about his feet.

Seems to be really underrated. What a team those Sixers had, though, they could have won several championships instead of just one.

His legend is an enigma. He's both underrated and overrated. He got the moniker the Boston Strangler because he hit clutch shots to help us beat Boston. But that's where his legend gets overblown. Eye test wise I'd say Hersey Hawkins was a better overall player. Toney was a really good shooter in an era where 3 point shooting was in it's infancy stage. But to me his legend was bigger than his career. TBF he was injured a lot.

Interesting to read a first-hand account. My only references are the great backcourt he formed with Maurice Cheeks and that despite being one of the less-known players in those 80s Sixers teams he used to kill it against Boston.

It was the perfect construction of a team in the 80s.
A pure PG Cheeks
An assassin gunner SG Toney
An alpha player Julius
A bully center Moses
And a defensive stopper Bobby Jones

It's too bad Julius didn't get this nucleus going earlier otherwise we'd have won the early part of the 80's and health issues and age stopped us from winning more.

If anyone was underrated on the Sixers it was Mo Cheeks. He was the glue to the Sixer engine. He was an all-time leader in assists and steals before Stockon and MJ came along. That's pretty much the definition of underrated

Speaking of Mo Cheeks, I saw him in person when he played against Indiana State and was a big fan of his. I was hoping the Celtics would draft him when they had back to back 5th and 6th picks and took Freeman Williams and Larry Bird. Imagine if they had taken Mo instead of Freeman.

Mo Cheeks was nowhere on the radar coming out of college. He was a second rounder. And the Celtics had Jo Jo White at the time. Aurbach would have been hung taking Mo Cheeks with that pick

Jo Jo White was 32 years old and avg 12 pts a game and was traded part way thru the season. My point is I saw Mo in person and I am not a NBA scout and I said at the time this guy is great. I realize that Freeman was a great scorer in college but Mo could run a team and was clearly the better player if you know anything about BB. If anything Red didn't draft him because he had Tiny.

Ill ask op cause i need more info on this guy. Was Toney a case similar to Bernard king? Was he better at peak play than 1984-85 king?

King was on a different level. He was one of the best scorers ever from 5-20 feet. His release was so quick he didn't need to makes moves to clear space. He would shoot right in your grill and there was nothing you could do. He would release the shot before you had time to put a hand up.

He led the league in scoring at 33 ppg in '85 shooting 53% from the field and he didn't score a lot at the rim.

Freeman was a 8th overall pick. Mo Cheeks was drafted in the second round. Red didn't draft him because he wasn't a top 10 prospect out of college. It would be similar to saying imagine if the Sixers drafted Motrezl Harrell over Jahlil Okafor. That's why Red didn't draft him.

Here's why

05' Zydrunas..... 17/9 and 2.1 blocks.. 19.5 PER.. 0.149 WS/48.. #12 team defense
90' Pippen......... 16/7 and 1.2 blocks.. 16.3 PER.. 0.087 WS/48.. #19 team defense

King was a special kind of scorer for sure. Toney nowhere near his level as a scorer. Toney was a straight gunner. King I'd say was a cross between Glen Robinson and Jordan. Had the straight up pull but wouldn't fade like Jordan, he'd actually body you. Kinda like wanting the contact. I liked his game. TJ Warren is kind of a throwback to Bernard King.
