View Full Version : The greatest players play different from each other - they all carve their own style

I was reminded of this watching an interview with the chess goat, who described a hypothetical matchup with another goat (Kasparov) as a "clash of styles":

that's always been my primary argument regarding the basketball goats - less ball-dominant skillsets like MJ and Bird simply play a superior way, which gives teams the highest possible ceiling and brand of ball

Gary Kasparov got shook by a computer and blamed the refs. Carl Magnussen has inflated stats and plays in the soft internet era. Bobby Fischer is the GOAT.

agree

and Magnus also identifies a classic Achilles heel of many supremely talented players, who lack supreme confidence and fear things that aren't there (20:36 mark):

Hey, man listen. You said it not me. I didn't want to bring it up but it really did look like MJ was spooked in '95. Even in '96 the fear crept in (remember his reaction when GP checked in the game) (http://i.imgur.com/vFsq2w2.gif). You can see it in those eyes. Absolute fear. It sucks he came before Bron otherwise I really feel Bron's 2016 run would have inspired him to get his shit together when the going went tough.

I've said many times that MJ didn't have his normal goat swagger in 1995.

He really didn't.. Not surprisingly, he looked like lebron in the clutch that year

Players need that "assassin" mentality to be the best they can be, as Magnus describes at the 20:36 mark of the vid

regarding Payton - your link didn't work and MJ was infact overconfident vs Gary - he figured he could muscle Gary down low, which was the wrong strategy against Gary at that time.

No way in hell Magnus hasn't surpassed Garry. Rapids, blitz, and classical champion, his dominance is unprecedented.

3ball has spent his entire life propping up: MJ, Bird, and Kobe
3bal has spent his entire life downplaying: LeBron

And after all of his hard work TheConsensus still shows:

1. LBJ/MJ
3. Magic
7-10 range = Bird
12-15 range = Bryant

Keep up the good work
