View Full Version : Will LeBron last long enough to break the all time scoring record?

Clearly scoring is not his primary duty any longer though he still is able to put up 20+ ppg... for now.

Kareem is at 38387 and LeBron was at 33347 heading into this game. He needs 5041 points to pass Kareem. Including tonight, he has 213 games left on his Lakers contract.

That's 23.67 points per game that he needs to score if he is somehow able to play every single remaining regular season game for the next two and a half years.

Chances are he's going to miss some games due to injury even if only a couple a season and with the Lakers clenching maybe a few at the end of the year also.

Realistically, he's probably going to need to play another year beyond his current Lakers contract, at which point he will drastically have fallen off in scoring ability.

If he's willing to swallow his pride, imo, he will clearly make it. But if he decides that his pride is too strong to go out there putting up 15 ppg at the end, maybe not.

Guess we'll see.

I should add, all it takes is a season ending injury at any point during the next 2.5 years for this to basically be null and void and out of reach.

I don't think he would but I'd be happily proven wrong.

When do you see him passing Kobe?

No and he's making it harder on himself by missing all these free throws

Yes, his goal is to play alongside Bronny. and he wants to surpass kareem's scoring record.

lol obviously. I'd say it's almost a certainty he'll play till 40.

He will pass Kobe some time this season... he's only 300 points behind right now. 12-15 games?

Lebron is ~5000 points ahead of where Kareem was at age 35, and scoring at a higher rate than Kareem was, so he's certainly on track to break the record. Also, Lebron has said repeatedly that he wants to keep playing well past the end of his current Lakers contract.

In the end it will come down to injuries, if Lebron can avoid a major one for the next ~3 years, he will take the record. If not, well we've all seen how quickly injuries can derail a career, no matter who you are.

I think he will... Once he gets to surpass Malone, he'll get that extra motivation, and perhaps will increase his FGA. The bad thing is perhaps he'll be less team oriented player by that time.

Depending on how Lebron wants to play it...I could see him doing some SERIOUS load management in his later years.

If he wanted...he could play like 45-50 games a year between the ages of 37-40 and stay relatively fresh for that age.

However, I just can't ever see Lebron going into chuck mode at any point. He could still probably average something like 14/6/8 at age 40 and still keep a solid TS%.

LeBron is already top 10 in both scoring and assists in NBA history.

I think he wont retire until he breaks that. He would play for a team tanking.

kareem was something truly special...

Last couple years he truly lumbered down the floor , for the love of the game.

Lebron is smaller , however boat loads of miles on his legs compared to Kareem.

I'd like to see the amount of minutes each player has played for a
comparison.

found it - Kareem 57,446
Lebron regular season - 46,235

It's pretty much a foregone conclusion at this point. I'd be surprised if he didn't break it.
