View Full Version : Should the legal age of adulthood be increased?

Title.

The age of sexual consent has been changed over the years in accordance with evolving social norms.

Should age of majority, for purposes of things like voting and gun ownership, be increased to reflect the longer delays in social responsibility seen for most young people today?

Discuss.

I think the age to vote should be 25. the vast majority of 18 year olds lack the maturity and life experience to have a say in important things like the election of a president.

owning a gun and drinking are different and require less sophistication to have a handle on

I agree that drinking age doesnt need to be increased.

I feel like very few young people between 18-23 actually have their own property to protect. And even the ones who have kids... it’s not like we’re living in the days of hunt your family’s food or theyll starve. Anyone can get food stamps. So it’s not like guns are that important to the vast majority of adolescents.

On the other hand I do understand that many people hunt as a hobby and if theyre responsible gun owners theyre perfectly entitled to do so. Still, we make people wait until adulthood currently to purchase firearms. So if you raise the age of adulthood, it’s not technically changing any gun laws.

That one I have mixed feelings on. Voting age? Definitely for raising it. Drinking age? Definitely not.

Everything should be 21 to make it easier.

Age of consent should drop to around 16 though. Kids are having sex anyway.

How many of you actually own guns?

EU doesn't have this issue, their voter turnout is way higher because their education system shits on ours. What does maturity have anything to do with it? The brain isn't done developing till 25 but people develop at different rates anyways.

If you can join the military at 18, then you can own a gun it doesn't have to be anymore complicated than that. Drinking age can stay 21 as well until there's a push about how alcohol is actually detrimental for your health.

I am far older than most of you , but legal drinking, voting, etc .. was in my generation at 18 years old.
Here is Wisc. there were a significant amount of deaths because of it , and Wisc. changed to 21, and basically put the clamps down on drunk driving.
I say great /

BUT I would like 'legal age' to become 20 years old.

I feel young adults are far ahead of my time at that age, and are far more
responsible. I could list the crap I did at that age , and looking back I am surprised I am still alive.

Retardicans trying their hardest to stop the power of the youth that'll be voting them out. 25 is also still very young and powerful. Biggest threat to your existence. You might need to raise it to 55

Setting aside the fact that it would require a constitutional amendment to increase the voting age from 18 to 21 or 25, do those who support such an increase also support an increase in the minimum age requirement for military service to 21 or 25 as well?

Remember, the 26th amendment was widely supported on the strength of the fact that the minimum draft age at been reduced to 18: the argument being that if 18-year olds were old enough to fight, they were old enough to vote.

Well personally Id favor 23 as an age of adulthood.

So how about a compromise?

Active duty between 18-23 can vote? Otherwise 23 is the voting age.

OP & other Trumpeters are obviously scared of Trump being a 1-term president even after pulling all the tricks in the book (including making Ukraine announce Biden investigation and trying hard to start a war with Iran). What's one more trick to them by eliminating eligibility of a huge number of young voters (they don't vote Republican)??

Luckily, it wouldn't pass even if they tried to.

Honest to God if we're talking strictly about voting the age... it should be raised to 30.

But the problem with that is how is it morally justifiable to potentially force people to join the armed forces at 18 when you won't allow them to vote until 30? It wouldn't be. Or even allow them to join period. I can't get around letting people potentially die for the country and not allowing them to have a voice to vote... even if I know their opinion is very likely dog shit.

People under 30 have no business voting. Most people have no business voting period, but that's another discussion I suppose. But seriously... if you aren't 30, chances in, in the extreme majority of cases, you flat out do not know enough about objective cold hard reality to offer an opinion of value on any form of governance.

Yes! Ain't no way in hell I was an adult when I turned 18. I'd say 25 should be the legal age for adulthood, drinking and smoking age. I'd push it to 30 if I got to start my own community.

Once again, because youre a one dimensional animal, everything for you is in the context of a person. Either a savior like Bernie or a villain like Trump. A master or an enemy. Youre a subservient, territorial pack dog. Ideas are not something your brain is evolved for.

Ive been asking questions like these on ISH long before Trump was a candidate for President.

You have no opinions on any philosophical issue that doesnt have a specific and concrete position already established by the left wing at large. Anything ambiguous that might not result in a PC resolution by the end of the convo, you avoid it like the plague.

Youre a beta, a poser, and a parrot. Nobody respects anything you say, yet you spout like a pompous and enlightened wannabe beacon of insight.

Youre massive cringe. Keep that beak closed, animal.

Dude did you really use an image of a crazy leftist (like yourself) screaming in the air at Trump's inauguration to describe a so called "Trumpeter."

No originality.

Oh it was intentional. There is hardly any difference in craziness between that crazy liberal in that image and crazy conservative that is fultznation.

I'm typing out coherent, rational sentences in discussion of a topic, while your comrade in the gif is shrieking at the clouds like a banshee and youre babbling memorized talking points for the umpteenth time about Trump.

You're an animal.

If you think there is a vast difference in lunacy between that guy in that image and the cult-like followers of Trump then I'm afraid you are mistaken & delusional. I will leave it at that.

Then why didn't you show an image of a cult-like trump follower acting crazy?

No, a lot of the issues being voted on effect 18-21 year olds. Plus being able to be a milcuck and not be able to vote is lol
