You're right. When I wrote that, I'd just finished re-watching a series of his early fights that ended, predominantly, with left-hook KOs: Mark Young, Canady, Johnson, Colay, Spinks. But I did some quick research and, like you said, it was definitely a much more even split between left/right hooks, left/right uppercuts, usually set up by vicious combinations...and you have to mention his famous "bolo" combination (left hook to the body, followed by a split-second left uppercut to the head). I was making the point that while Tyson definitely had a ton of natural ability, the tactical mastery he displayed during his prime ('85/'86 to '88), rested largely with the training and direction he got from Cus and Rooney. Without that solid training and mentoring, he indulged in a wild lifestyle and shirked his responsibility to train hard. Rooney later said that Mike would often try to weasel out of training, and that he and Cus were the only ones who wouldn't put up with his "bullshit". When he dumped Rooney, he believed that he was invincible, and his new (inexperienced) handlers bowed to his every demand. He became an out-of-shape headhunter. Unlike a lot of naturally great fighters, Tyson's style required that he be in unimaginably great shape--that he train harder than most. If he was a millisecond off on his timing, he would be open to jabs like a rank amateur, which would force him to try and end fights early by head-hunting, which would make a short, stocky guy like Tyson an open target for pot shots. That's a HUGE pitfall to Mike's style. If he was just a little off he was very beatable. But when he was ON, he was virtually untouchable. He would target the body and, as a counterpuncher, he would break people down before finishing them off with combinations and blows to the head. Guys who were supposed to have the perfect answer to Tyson (tall, fast, mobile), like Pinklin Thomas, ended up looking like chumps against prime Tyson.

is it legit?

we all do rely on the people around us more than we think.

Tyson couldve been the GOAT if everything didnt go to shit. He was like an MVP on a lottery squad without his boys.

Early Tyson used a lot of head movement and went to the body a lot. Older Tyson was more stationary looking for the one punch knockout.

Don't know about the training part of it but I am not surprised. Judging by his personal life he was pretty undisciplined lol.

true but it really shows the point...

cus had him on a routine of practicing left hooks. Which automated itself in his fights. Without him, mike was just trying to donkey kong punch right hand dudes at the end.

Tyson couldve been the ultimate diamond in the rough GOAT with proper training but i guess i do agree the same recklessness that gave him his fearless demeanor and aggressive striking was balanced out of his lack of discipline and long term motivation.

He is a GOAT athlete and person i think everybody should look up to.

His KO victory over Francois Botha is proof positive of this. Even the announcers were dogging Tyson about his movement in the ring right before he laid Botha out with one punch. :lol

Did he have the potential to be GOAT? Yep.

Did he stray from that path? Yep.

Would he 100% unquestionably be GOAT if he stayed disciplined with Cus and Rooney? Nah, saying that would be unfair to all the other great fighters. Staying disciplined when you're the champ is hard as hell. Having that ability is a talent in itself. I think even if Cus didn't die, Tyson would dump him after a few more fights like he did Rooney.

tio that was ridiculous.

tyson tried helping and carrying him off the ring.

he had empathy after dealing for so long with such evil snakes.

ironically, the baddest men he knew existed outside the ring.

Yes. Cus was the only one who could reel in Mike, he was a father figure to him. He was wild before Cus and got worse after his death.

I believe you are correct.... most young fighters are hungry and they work thru their legs // older fighters always seem to behind the eight ball draggin lookin for a quick punch to claim a victory
