View Full Version : Luka and the mavs have the second worst offense in the league in the clutch

Towards the final minutes of the 4th when the game slows down because players are actually playing defense the mavs have the second worst offensive rating in the league. Mavs will struggle in the post season where the majority of the game is like this. Building your system around a Ball dominant player who leads the team in scoring is a recipe for failure come playoff time. Teams equal in talent that have systems that focus more on on and off ball movement will almost always be supior. Sorry mavs fans hope your ready for a first round exit.

they have a pretty 3 heavy system reliant on role players making 3's. It is a mistake to fall for clutch stats over just a season however. they are often subject to variance. and gs used to have the best ball movement in the league and had some bad clutch years.
in fact I be a bit worried about the mavs if I was the clippers because their offense is so potent and high variance. Point differential wise, they are far ahead of the other west teams. I rather face an unclutch team that will likely lose a close game than a clutch team I usually beat by 10+. okc is a good counter example. Their point differential indicates just a nice team but they're unbelievably good in the clutch. clips shouldnt fear them however

Porzinngis should be rolling and then Luca takes over in the 4th, if the shot is off he finds Porzingis. whats the problem

I dont see any scenario where mavs beat the clips. I highly dought it will bute ven if the mavs offence is as effective in the post season, clippers defense is far superior to the mavs.

Problem with luka taking over in the 4th as the main scorer is that the game becomes less run and gun and more of a half court game. Luka wont be able to get to the hole as much in the half court set and he has no post game or mid range so he'll end up settling for alot of threes. I dont think someone whos as inefficient from the three as luka is should be trying to take over games. You want someone who's either a great three point shooter or has a more versatile offense like bron, kawhi or kd. If you dont have that guy then use more on and off ball movement to get guys open for some good looks.

I didnt hear it anywhere im just assuming he dosnt because he rarely goes in the post. Wether he does or dosnt have one the point its not something he'll use a a consistent weapon to score. Not anytime soon anyway.

Who would have thought that taking 30FG% contested and anticipated step back 3s is not a viable clutch strategy..

Clippers are better than the Dallas Mavericks

He has an excellent post game. But a post game won't do shit for you in the playoffs (unless you're an actual C and you can go from the catch to score really quickly). What you really need is a mid game. The ability to do something after you have a step on your perimeter defender and before the help comes (usually at the rim).

I dont know about doing nothing in the post season. Kobe, mj and more recently kawhi have had success using the post as non centers. I agree with the mid being important though.

the top offensive skillset is pulling up for jumpers off a hard dribble - so the kind where the player dribbles hard one direction, jumps, floats and shoots while hanging - some players can get this shot off at ANY time with any level of contest.. others like Zion or Lebron rarely take these kinds of shots... think of mj's "shot" over Cleveland - it's hard to imagine lebron/zion attempting such a shot

Yeah its definitely becoming a lost art for sure. With the way the rules are its not really needed as much, especially in the regular season. Come playoffs though its definitely a useful tool. Kawhi is one one of the few elite players that still uses it. Its no surprise that hes debatably the best post season player right now.
