View Full Version : Amazon Prime membership is a ripoff. How to get free shipping without membership

Think of what else the $100 per year could net you rather than giving it to Amazon every year for a service you can easily get for free.

For the price of a single Amazon prime membership per year, you could do any one of the following:

10 haircuts
Two months of gas for your car
Go on five fun dates
Eat out once a month with your colleagues
Put it towards investing

And still get free shipping on Amazon. Shipping is free as long as you can plan your purchases so they're at least $25 to get that automatic free shipping. I'm not saying don't shop on Amazon. Just be smart about it. There's a reason you don't have money in the bank and one of them is called unnecessary memberships like Amazon prime.

Honestly have been buying more things at my local Walmart. They have an easier return policy. Whereas Amazon recently changed it so that you have to go to one of their Amazon drop locations.

Amazon, at present, is vastly superior to all online retailers... and most b&m retailers. Depending on your location and proximity to a distribution center, Amazon may be straight up better than all b&m retailers also.

Their search algorithm is second to none in the world of retail. Basically every other website, particularly those of Wal-Mart, Target, etc... are all very, very bad. These are not tech companies and they're hiring second rate programmers investing minimal amounts into their websites and it shows. Their searches do not bring back relevant results nearly as well as they should. Amazon's does. Amazon's shipping is second to none.

If you live close to certain DCs, you can get same day shipping. Basically no matter where you are, you can get two day shipping.

In addition to their search algorithm being vastly superior, you can also get an abundance of information about the product you're about to purchase via user reviews. Although, these are becoming worth less and less over time because manufacturers have figured out the game and give their product away for free in exchange for 5 star reviews. I digress.

You also get access to Amazon Video, Twitch Prime(not as good since they re-added ads), Prime Music... it goes deeper than that, but those are the core bullet points. Alexa integration...

It's rare that I have a desire to return an item I purchased from Amazon, and when I do, I drive to a local UPS store and they take it without me even so much as having to package the thing.

Amazon does a tremendous job branding their boxes. The Amazon logo on the side plus Amazon prime tape make you feel like you're getting something special every time. The other retailers have yet to figure this out. When I get a package from another website, it's just kinda... eh... but when it's Amazon, it's excitement basically every time because of the branding. They've done a very fine job at manipulating my monkey brain.

The other thing I also forgot to mention... their catalog of items is so much bigger than everyone else's that it's actually mindblowing.

Good on you to realize that. We have people out here throwing $100 at Amazon each year buying shit they never use because they think it's a good deal. Flexing until they go broke like NBA players.

What does that have to do with amazon? sounds like the problem is the consumer.

Amazon is great... it's not difficult to save 100 dollars annually. If people agreed with you guess what? Amazon wouldn't be as big as it is today.

Haircut $9 plus $1 tip. Go to any Asian barber shop.
$50 for 17 gallons a month. That's for normal commuting in a reasonable gas sedan.

$20 is really for my cap. It doesn't take much money to take someone on a date. Coffee shops run what $10? Two tickets to a movie $20. An hour of bowling. An hour of pool with some drinks. An hour of arcade. Could go on and on.

You get a haircut every week?? Jeez, they probably cut 0.1 inch each week that nobody would ever notice if you were to leave in place.. You can do 1 haircut a month and be perfectly fine. I get 1 haircut every 3 months, and it saves so much money. I also cut my hair short so I can go 3 months with small growth. If I didn't care about money, I would still get 1 haircut every 2 months. Waste of time to get a haircut every week.

Take a photo of yourself right after a haircut and a week later - I promise you will not be able to see 0.1 Inch of growth. You will notice one month of growth but it won't be enough for you to go "Oh wow, I look so much worse than when I got the haircut a month ago." Save the money and put it to use elsewhere like buying a stock.

Amount spent w/ weekly haircuts for 2 months: $200
Amount spent w/ one haircut every 2 months: $25

cheap haircut, and a very low tip.

17 gallons gets you about 400 or so miles per month. I guess that can work if you dont drive much or live close to work. I drive (well not anymore) way more than that.

movies dont cost $10 per ticket anymore. arcade date? how old are you?

It depends but yeah. I try to do it at least every two weeks. For me, I get a skin fade so it grows back on the sides everywhere. I think I do it because when you look good you feel good especially in a toxic environment like I am in 24-7 for work you need every bit of confidence you get.

I can understand why people are frugal on haircuts though. For others it's the complete opposite. I have a friend who does it every week consistently for years. I had another friend who does it every 3-4 days. In NYC it's not cheap either. Especially since my barber I had for over 10 years so tipping is important.

They are throwing away money then. 0.1 inch of growth requires no haircut. That amount of growth is so minuscule that nobody can draw out 0.1 inch on a paper. It's about the length of two tiny ants lined up end-to-end lol

But to each their own. I just would rather put the money to better use

How is a %11 tip on a $9 haircut low? That's actually above average tip.

Movie tickets can cost even less with matinee pricing. Like $6 a pop. You have much to learn young grasshopper.

I haven't seen him in almost 8 years... but I suppose it doesn't bother him that I'm still attached to his account lol. To be honest, I've prob wasted a LOT of money because of that free shipping. It doesn't cost any extra, and I'm not sure if it matters but I buy a lot so maybe he gets better customer service because of me? Quite often I order gfx cards on Amazon when deals are too good and just flip them

A few times their warehouse has shipped me upgrades by accident, maybe their factory bots? Anyways once instead of getting a half dozen rtx2060's, they sent me six 2080 supers for the same price. This has happen a couple other times with smaller parts as well. Their auto packaging/labelling gets miscanned by those warehouse bots I think. Or maybe their shipping workers just hate their job and hook it up.

Also when you buy used/like new stuff from them, in my experience 90% of the time it's brand new unopened factory sealed stuff.

Not sure if it's 'guarenteed' but my parents and brother who are both in socal get things delivered next day. For me, takes about 5 business days which sucks... but last year I had ~80 purchases from amazon -- not sure how many were under the free shipping threshold but that alone and streaming services solidify my annual membership.
