It has no official definition much like mvp. It’s left to the voters to define but generally would go to the player who makes the greatest contribution beyond what can conventionally be accounted for.

We all acknowledge these players exist.

Who would you give it to for this year?

I feel like Manu, Robert Horry, Derrick Fisher, and Iggy might all have one. If teams got to nominate their own guys you might even see a Haslem type come up but not win. Jason Kidd in Dallas perhaps?

Much as you hear about heart and soul types....Patrick Beverly or Marcus Smart might win this year.

Hmmm..

I've got a few.

I feel like Marc Gasol, though he was injured a lot this year, should be a candidate. He does a lot of smart things that don't register in the stat sheet. Positional defense, passes to the right person to keep the offense moving. Tips and touches in the right spot.

I feel like Marcus Smart is also on that list, like you said, but he's also a little overrated at this point imo, because Boston hasn't actually been a top 3 team in the East in the last 2 years. This year they are on pace to finish 3rd, since the season is over, but I would still pick a Healthy Philly over them in the playoffs, and even Miami could upset them.

Jason Kidd in Dallas is a great one. We also saw his positive impact on the knicks in the 12-13 season. (I think they had 50 wins and Melo got the scoring title that year)

it would have to be a defensive type, a pj tucker-type.

for example draymond is trash as a basketball player but he gave the warriors swagger and confidence.

right now I have to say it's lebron. I'm obviously biased but I think he brings the most to the table outside of the stat sheet. you look at their record and that's 80% lbj. thats a similar record compared to most of his teams.

draymond plucked the different facets to his game out of a landfill

marc gasol is absolutely a high-intangibles guy. he single-handedly shut down the best player on the other team two series in a row vucevic who was an all-star for the magic and embiid the next round.

Not today, but this was Shane Battier for a time.

If we’re gonna throw kidd in there the Larry Bird has to be the all-time intangibles guy right?

Completely taking away his scoring, passing, and rebounding numbers. Every old school game I watch involving him, he’s just in every play making the correct move whether it’s a perfectly placed tip that gets a break started or a slight hesitation in the half court that throws the defense for a loop.

For guys now, Montrezl Harrell gives me those will-to-win-dog vibes.

Millsap always seemed to be in the right place at the right time as well. At least offensively. Williams and Boozer and even Kirilenko got the press but he was always an unsung pain in the ass.

Lots of obvious already mentioned.

I gotta shout out DFish. Kobe never won a ring without him. Kobe might've been the leader of the 08-10 Lakers on court but DFish was the vet that kept it all together off the court.

Today, I love Pat Bev. He truly brings that old school, physical mentality.

Beverley seems like a fantastic team mate from a lot of the locker room videos I have seen of the Clippers. I am sure team mates would absolutely love to play with somebody who puts it all on the line every single night too.

I think with him though he plays hard, he's a great defender, but I think some of the stuff he does when he's needling superstars takes away from his intangibles. Like he wants the attention instead of just balling.
