Obviously influenza has been around for a long time. But which will cause more deaths per year? Right now there are over 200 deaths in the US from corona. But not too long ago it was just one death. It’s climbed exponentially and if it keeps on doing that, oh boy..

To answer your question, the flu.

Worldwide, 300,000-650,000 people die from the flu each year.

So far, the coronavirus killed around 10,000 people worldwide.

In conclusion, the flu kills more people than corona currently.

10,000 people died even though the whole world is in self isolation. I wonder how many people will die from the flu this year since no one is going out?

in the US it is covid by a long shot...especially if we are not to include late 2019

even with all of the 2019-20 flu season, it's still covid by a long shot

we're at 72,000 deaths and it hasn't even been that long...it's gonna get up there real quick, already has

Looking like 100k deaths due to covid-19 by end of the year.. Maybe even before the end of summer. Most flu shots in history was 61k couple years ago. Blew past that a couple weeks ago

The flu has killed hundreds of millions of people.. hell, it killed 80,000 in a single season WITH a vaccine. Now that's what I call DEADLY volume 1

Even if we pay people extra $ for corona code, it has a loooong way to catch up bro. Like pennies to dollars

In the end I think influenza will prove to be deadlier, but we'll have to wait and see

We're at ~70,000 COVID-19 deaths in the last 6 weeks, and will likely brush past 80,000 total deaths by the end of this week or beginning of next week. The seasonal flu doesn't kill that many people that quickly.

We saw a sharp spike in flu related deaths in 2017-2018 because the flu vaccine that year did not target 2 virulent strains that a lot of people ended up contracting. Unfortunately, we had a weak vaccine... which underscores the importance of good, effective vaccines.

Incidentally, the CDC revised that 80k flu number down to 61K. I'm not sure why people continue to use the 80K number even after the CDC has updated it.

Pretty sure this is all arbitrary anyway. 'Flu' as a cause of death can itself be subjective as most people, particularly old people, are probably not tested for the flu virus itself when they die from whatever.

Whereas in contrast, people who test positive for COVID as they're dying from pancreatic cancer or drowning in a backyard pool are probably being chalked up as corona deaths these days.

Intuitively, the statistics of these different afflictions cannot be compared reliably.

yep

fruits are now testing positive for COVID too

The fruit community is now calling for social justice for those to be counted as COVID deaths, but we all know they just want the reimbursement money

Sorry, but the CDC estimates 61k deaths that year from flu. https://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/burden/index.html

I am taking CDC's final estimate over any other estimates out there in articles from 2018

So 61K, with vaccine, and no one blinked an eye. The point made still stands.

Eyes blinked...it was a really bad flu year...media talked about it. Plenty of articles out there on it.

We don't have the luxury of seeing the alternate time line where there is no shutdown. Maybe covid kills 2m...maybe just 200k...we can't see.

It is a given though that it would dominate that influenza year.

We are still going to blow past 100k deaths soon.. Maybe in next 3 weeks..

I bet you the original 100k-200k estimate by the coronavirus task force was the estimate all along. The whole "We bought down the estimate death count to 60k due to the wonderful job we are doing" was political in nature to protect Lil Donny politically from losing more ground in the polls

Medicare will fund $13,000 per patient with covid...that is where that number comes from

It's part of Trump's covid relief aid

Still covid numbers are LOWER than the increase in death count...the numbers are not over inflated they are under-inflated
