I doubt this subject will interest many, but in light of what's been going on this may be one avenue to stay busy and be rewarded for it. The wife and I started a garden a couple of weeks ago from scratch. We decided to start with seedlings - we've got Basil, Bell Peppers, Oregano and Cilantro going. Our biggest issue is we're trying to grow on our balcony which has limited sunlight but it does stay warmer. The area I live is VERY windy with gusts 20mph almost weekly. I also don't want to grow anything directly in the ground -- less maintenance the better. I'll post pictures once I get home from work.
Anyone else garden?

I have a few fruit trees (fig, guava, persimmon, jujube, mulberry, avocado), cherry tomato vines, passion fruit vines and herb garden (sweet basil, thai basil, mint, green onions, chives).
If it's windy and your seedlings are still weak, you might want to keep your seedlings indoor. Then you can harden them by leaving them outside for a couple of hours at first then increase the duration a little bit every day.
Just imagine having a garden full of cannabis. It would be so damn epic to see.

I am in 2 feet of snow in northern Wisc.
We have a garden (better to say I do , and wife picks from it) Two orchards as well as a pumpkin patch that has Zucchini , squash etc..
Just installed a green house last year and it will kick in sometime in April (2 months before I can grow anything else)
Currently in the garden under snow is rhubarb , asparagus , and russian garlic.
Our farm also has several berry plants (black berry, raz. , hawthorne , june)
what is typically planted in the garden , tomatoes , beans, pea pods , cauliflower , cabbage , broccoli , hot peppers.

Damn thats cool. I bet your dinners are tasty. What type of peppers?
If I had a house, I'd plant serranos bc of how often I eat them.

Growing bud was one of my favorite hobbies, my buddy in college gave me a small clone off one of his good plants. It was a joke at first that I just put in my window for sun. Turned into taking it on like a pet and buying a whole bunch of indoor equipment like fans and HPS lights.
Had like 3 harvest over like 12-18 months between 4 plants in a medium sized closet , made a lot of mistakes and spent too much money. Especially for exhaust/air and electricity. My first harvest I didn't cure it right so it smelled like dirt and got seedy because it was a hermaphrodite.
They grow so fast, nearly a new leaf every 24hr's under the right lights. Fun af to look at and smell even better fresh.
Definitely a hobby you want to Youtube University before you dive into. Being in college it just wasn't practical at the time.

Lol intriguing. So I'm assuming that you basically know what you can extract from a cannabis plant, something that is legal in california. In fact, you can even actually earn how much many bucks if you intend to sell these. Here where i live though, too bad this thing is a prohibited substance.

Yea the flower part, it's covered in sticky oily little spores that get you cheefed. After dry turn into crystals/keef. You can even make hash with the extra sticks and stems if you have enough to concentrate
I actually didn't even smoke back then or sell it, there was only a ounce yield per anyways. Tossed it to roommates for free, I just enjoyed the growing part like experimenting with different strains, tipping to make them grow real bushy and curing them in jars afterwards. One harvest I didn't even touch them at all, just let them organically form shape. No lie in 2 months under 24hr lighting they grew neck high at 6 feet, so top heavy that when they began to flower buds the entire cannabis tree started to curl over and sag.
I didn't do research, my problem I learned was plants in nature use breeze and wind to help their stalks grow strong and keep them upright. I just had a mini exhaust fan, so they were weak and died quick. These problems kept popping up with every harvest, the next one was bugs and mites, the prior I had a male and a female plant making everything seed. It's just a more convenient hobby with bigger space, that I didn't have.
So adding up the $120 electricity bill for 1000 watt lamps and fans running 24/7 every month, as a broke college kid. I retired from horticulture after a year lol

when I grew my weed , never did anything special...
Water on seed to root ,, then planted to become a plant.
Height was about 2 feet , but just watered and sun light.
(never a high yield - sorry for pun)

Must be nice to be in that coastal/subtropical climate. You can grow practically anything. Mangos, cherimoya, white sapote, starfruit, lychees etc.
If I ever strike it super rich, I'm building a gigantic greenhouse and growing whatever I want.

Wow your story just kinda makes me wanna grow them in a garden but ofc can't do that here in our place. The least thing i can do is puff one and breathe it inside my lung while enjoying its scent at the same time. At that rate, it could feel like heaven doing that but i guess it shouldn't be enjoyed too much because you know what happens if you get overdose with it. Five years ago it was so common before because there were no regulations about it and in each street there were dudes selling them for a few cents, until that all changed when our succeeding chief commander hated them so much, he threatened that he will use his police force to eradicate those who still stubbornly supplied and used them. As a result, it became so scarce that people involved in providing the deews became wary of them since they may get caught and be imprisoned for until when.

Oh damn you're in the Philippines? Yeah Duterte's narcotic 'hit squads' were all over the news in the US and everyone internationally is aware of his midevil justice tackling non violent crimes.
Which is weird because his son (or brother?) is a drug trafficker and got popped a few times with impunity

Sadly, yes I am. I'm not a fan of politics but I don't hate him at all for being like that. The place is a dump though and needs discipline from most of its people so i can understand about the scenario in a reasonable point of view. Also, not everything negative you see in the news about his government is correct or right. Poor old man is just trying his best to rejuvenate his own country from being a corrupt and chaos nation but unfortunately, he's a very big victim of mudslingings, propagandas and anything painfully similar in a way that his critics badly want him to step down which i think is so ridiculous. Anyway, not going to talk about it any further tho since i might get berated by, you know, people who despise him a lot.

I've actually heard this same thoughts as yours by a few Filipino locals. How the international news tries to shame him but local citizens understand what he's trying to accomplish. Definitely not something i'm informed enough to share an opinion

It's cheap to live there.
50-100k US salary would have you living a lavishly comfortable lifestyle in a few SE Asia countries
That's why sexpats squander there, the pedo fetish and cheap ladyboi

Yeah, you can't just base everything on the media to have some impression about him. But no doubt that's what they do if the president running the country is not their own puppet and by that, you already know what i mean.

Lmao yes some expats do enjoy their lives in specific places here with their green cards on the line. 😂

Did it a lot as a kid, it's a nice feeling watching that freshly mowed lawn when you're finished. Mower for the first line around the edges, then tractor from there.

My garden this past year has gone to hell ... a lot of grass / weeds. Autumn I placed 3/4 of the garden into black plastic , to kill the soil.
I will only be planting tomato's and cauliflower. Maybe pumpkins.
Green house will have a full load of stuff.
2022 the plastic comes off, need to move the strawberries, and then a full bore garden.
I have mowed my garden , and works o.k. for mulch , which helps with the soil. (I do not have a tiller)

Agreed, it's tough during the humid summer but sometimes the extra effort for double path lines is worth it. This is one of my first times mowing with a garden mower so the lines werent straight. I wish i forked the extra thousand for a zero turn but financially wasnt in the position to do that after just purchasing the home.

If you are in a cold climate like me , a green house is a must to get a jump on the season.
I just finished planting a week ago , it was 100 degrees and 50 outside.
collards, kale, chard, beans, summer squash, and some bazil
I expect a yield in about 40-50 days.
neighbors have no clue. lmao

I live in almost the same climate. Unfortunately, it is extremely difficult to grow anything in such a climate. But my wife and I manage to grow some vegetables. Last year, we faced a different problem. Various insects ate quite a lot of our crop so we had to look for insecticides for the vegetable garden. Our friends advised us to search on this website trimthatweed.com (https://trimthatweed.com/best-insecticide-for-vegetable-garden/). I hope this year at least everything will be fine because my wife and I spent a lot of care and effort to grow our crops.
have you ever considered a green house ??
Bugs can be an issue / but a fan does wonders.

I’ve been veggie gardening for a long time. Avocado and lemons in the yard. Herbs for cooking in pots too. (never plant mint or oregano in the ground)
Just cukes, tomatoes and peppers this year. I’m growing a Chicago pepper called Melrose that makes a great sandwich with provolone.
The best advice I ever got is put a one dollar plant in a five dollar hole - spend the $ on building the soil.
I’ve been growing organic for a long time. No chemical fertilizers, weed killers, or pesticides. I figure if I’m going to grow it, might as well grow it clean.
A compost pile gives great stuff for the soil, and then you make a tea from it that works as a fertilizer and can drive away the pests as a spray.
That tea is pretty amazing - you can see an inch of growth in a day after applying it.
