Probably very ignorant here and not trying to start something...but I swear every time I see former black college/professional athletes or black athletes parents die in the news from healthy problems, they almost always seem to be extremely young (between 40-60). We have Kats mom in a coma (I assume she is younger than 60), but look at these articles.

https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/28945171/ex-texas-guard-david-edwards-dies-battling-coronavirus
https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/28947897/ex-st-john-standout-lee-green-dies-49

Maybe it's just a recent coincidence and there is probably a skew in the sports I watch (football/basketball which have way more black athletes than other sports).

Another former black athlete between 40-60 years old dying from covid-19. Idk man I feel like I everytime I see a former black athlete die from some health issue, so many times they are young as hell.

More articles of former black athletes dying between 40-60 due to disease, even the US Surgeon General mentioned black people dying more of coronavirus and other diseases.

On average, Black men live 69.1 years, which is five years less than the average of other men and 10 years less than the average of other women, according to the report called “Brotherly Love: Health of Black Men and Boys in Philadelphia.”

Meanwhile, hypertension and related illnesses such as kidney disease, and strokes impact Black men earlier and more often than other racial groups. Asthma is a significant source of morbidity for Black boys, as hospitalizations for asthma are nearly nine times higher compared to white boys.

These stats are crazy.

One of my buddies grew up in the '80's in Yonkers and Brooklyn. He's seen some shit. I asked him about this, and he said that the pressures and conditions of living in poverty shorten people's lifespans.

It happens in small unnoticeable ways. For example, living in bad housing conditions might introduce you to mold spores which can cause or exacerbate asthma.

For NBA guys specifically, height lowers lifespan. Every inch over like 6'5" has a significant impact on future cardiovascular health.

Back to my buddy though. He claimed that he and his brother used to run with DMX and steal cars. I told him he was full of shit...and he pulled out his phone and showed me a video of him laughing it up with DMX at a family BBQ.

The reason why you hear about young parents dying is that they are young, so it sorta odd when they die, but the big factor is that poor people live unhealthy lifestyles in general. Not everybody, but the average.

Useless stat in this context, since we know that a lot of black men grow up in poor areas, where they receive less medical care and are exposed to more drugs & gang activity. Millions of people already have this virus, so a very small percentage of former athletes getting it and dying isn't that much of a surprise.
